On May 2 the Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens, Nalgonda under the Presidentship of Mr. S.

Mallikarjun, organized a joint meeting with other Associations of Senior Citizens in the neighbouring
areas and Pensioners’Associations to discuss preparations for the Senior Citizens’ National Protest Day
on August 16. The Central Committee was represented by Mr. V.Nageshwar Rao, Dr.P. Pothamsetty and
myself.

There was unanimity in the audience about expressing our disappointment at the cold and indifferent
attitude of our rulers towards the concerns of Senior Citizens and to register a strong protest against it.
After expressing indignation at the indifference shown towards Senior Citizens, following basic demands
were recommended to be included in the common National Memorandum to be submitted to the State
Chief Ministers and the Prime Minister on August 16,

1] Health Insurance [probably Aarogyasri in AP type] for all Senior Citizens who are below
Income Tax level and not already covered under some other Government Health Insurance Scheme. It
should be fully subsidized for BPL category, and graded sharing basis by others.
2] All inmates of Old Age Homes, particularly belonging to BPL category to be covered under
fully subsidized Health Insurance, and those who are eligible to be paid the old age pension. The health
Insurance must also include care of inmates who are terminally ill [palliative care]. At present most of the
inmates of Old Age Homes do not enjoy any health security and are not paid old age pension.
3] The pension under the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme should be enhanced to
atleast Rs500/- per month from Rs 200/- in Andhra Pradesh and should be truthfully implemented
4] 50% Concession in Bus and Railway fares for all Senior Citizens
5] Suitable Land or Building to be provided in all Districts to have Multi Service Day Care
Centres for Senior Citizens.
6] Full implementation of the existing National Policy on Older persons should be the first
priority.
7] Immediate full implementation of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens
Act, 2007 in all Districts of Andhra Pradesh. At present it is operational only in one District namely West
Godavari.

It was pointed out by me that exactly these demands have been repeatedly submitted during the
last two years to the concerned Ministers and the Chief Ministers [ Late Sri Rajasekhar Reddy and Mr. K.
Rosaiah] and unfortunately no action was taken and were ignored.

During the meeting it was repeatedly emphasized that we are consistently ignored in spite of the
fact that we today represent 9% of the population which translates to around 25% of the person who
actually go to vote.

The meeting was followed by a Press meet which was well attended by the representatives of both Print
and Electronic Media.

meetings during May 2010, jointly with Pensioners Associations and other Senior Citizen Groups so that
we can face our rulers with a joint demand of United Senior Citizens of India.
