The Definitive and Extensive Guide

The Sentence
Sentence: A group of words that make complete sense, conveys a clear meaning and
expresses a clear thought.
Ex:
food good loves everyone healthy and. (just a group of words)
Everyone loves good and healthy food. (a group of words that conveys a clear
meaning)
There are four types of Sentences in the English language:
1: Declarative Sentence
2: Interrogative Sentence
3: Imperative Sentence
4: Exclamatory Sentence
Declarative Sentence: It is a declaration. It is a simple statement of a fact. It can be
negative or positive. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a full-stop. It is also
called as an Assertive Sentence.
Ex:
I love old songs.
I dont like liars.
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
Interrogative Sentence: It asks a question. It begins with a capital letter and ends with
a question mark.
Ex:
When are you coming to Delhi?
Why is he so upset?
Am I late?
Where do you live?
Imperative Sentence: It expresses commands, orders, or requests. It expresses a
command or an entreaty. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a full-stop.
Ex:
Clean this room fast. (Command)
Please help me lift this box. (Request)
Move in a line. (Command)
Be quiet. (Command)
Have mercy upon us. (Request)

Exclamatory Sentence: It expresses a sudden and strong feeling. It normally begins


with words like alas, oh, wow, hurray, each followed by a mark of exclamation.
Ex:
Wow! You look so beautiful.
Hurray! We have won the game.
Alas! She is no more.
What a fool I am!
How cold the night is!
What a shame!
Exercise 1: Identify the type of sentence:
