2016. MAN INSIDE ME: MASCULINITY OF FEMALE INSTITUTIONAL
NURSES. Benguet State University, La Trinidad, Benguet.

The study aimed to discover, understand, describe, and
explicate the masculinity of institutional based female nurses in
Benguet. It sought to understand the perception, experiences
and the effects of masculinity of female institutional nurses.
Maximum variation sampling and reputational-case sampling
were utilized for the selection of the participants in the study.
Qualitative

descriptive

phenomenological

approach

was

employed to fully describe masculinity in institutional nursing.


Individual in-depth interview and semi-structured interview were
conducted to collect substantive, relevant and specific data
followed by focus group discussion.
The results show that the participants perception on
masculinity

is

having

qualities

appropriate

to

or

usually

associated with men, relating to, or constituting the gender that

ordinarily includes most words or grammatical forms referring to


males or having a mannish bearing or quality as represented by
the domain the truth of my perception. The theme the body,
soul and mind under this domain reflected that the participants
view masculinity as a physical, emotional and possessing
strength on areas particularly mental (intellectual), emotional,
and spiritual to be able to provide the much needed holistic
care. Another theme love tactics under this domain reflects
female masculinity as being observed when they become
efficient in situations like toxic scenario man power is highly
needed. In the theme the man who can't be moved under this
domain, the participants view masculinity generally as suited to
males alone. Another theme one boy, one girl under this
domain reflects that some participants viewed masculinity to
refer to the men, some of them on the other hand perceived it to
be referring to either male or female individuals.
Moreover, it revealed that the participants involvement in
masculinity through their nursing experiences were facing the
challenges of being strong physically, psychologically, and also
emotionally as reflected in the domain adventure of a lifetime. In
the theme every teardrop is a waterfall under this domain, it

explains the experience of the participant emotionally. Another


theme in this domain which is Im moving on, I got to be
strong, the participants claimed that being a nurse, they needed
to stay alert to attend to emerging conditions within their shift.
Furthermore, it was discovered that the impact among the
participants about masculinity is acquiring diverse as well as
related lessons and insights as a result of their experiences and
views of masculinity in nursing as represented by the domain
aftershock. Under the sub theme Sick and Tired in this domain,
it reflected that the participants faced physical strain in the long
run of their nursing career. Another subtheme in this domain fix
you denotes that their experiences made them a better nurse,
more efficient and competent nurse.
Based

from

the

findings

it

is

recommended

that

the

participants must continue learning from their daily nursing


experience

and remain

feisty

and

masculine

in

given

circumstance, nurses should be mindful that having time for


leisure is necessary as much as giving the best nursing care to
their patients is concerned, individuals who are interested in the
nursing profession must be devoted to explore the realm of

nursing as a public-service including the issues and trends it


currently faces, institutional nurses must find ways to express
their grief in the encounter of unlikely experiences which
happened within their shift, the term masculine or masculinity
should now be acceptably used for female descriptions especially
in nursing, lastly further research works should be conducted
regarding the personal experiences of institutional nurses so
their concerns may be addressed.
