5. (a) Dene a Wind Rose. Explain the importance of wind roses in air pollution
studies.
(b) A factory uses 2,00,000 litre. of furnace oil (specic gravity 0.97) per month.
If for one million lt. of oil used per year, the particulate matter emitted is 3
tonnes/year, SO2 emitted is 59.7 tonnes/year, NOx emitted is 7.5 tonnes/year,
Hydro carbons emitted are 0.37 tonnes/year and Carbon monoxide emitted is
0.52 tonnes/year. Calculate the height of chimney required to be provided for
safe dispersion of the pollutants.

6. (a) Explain the various methods of lter cleaning with neat sketches.
(b) Calculate the number of cyclones required to treat a ow of 50m3 /sec with an
inlet velocity of 15m/sec. The diameter of cyclone is 1.8m.

SOx by the following processes.

5. A stack of height 50m releases 450 mg/sec of SO2 with a velocity of 4.9 m/sec
in summer. The stack diameter is 1.5m. The stack gas temperature is 3000 C.
Atmospheric pressure is 1.005 kg/cm2 and wind speed is 1.833 m/sec. Find the
eective stack height. Also nd the ground level concentrations at 1 km, 2 km, 5
km and 10 km distances, downwind.

(b) A mono dispersed aerosol 1.99 mm in diameter is passed through a gravity


settler 20 cm wide, 50 cm long with 18 plates and channel thickness of 0.124
cm. The gas ow rate is 8.6 LPM, and it is observed that, it operates at
an eciency of 64.9%. How many plates would be required to have the unit
operated at 80% eciency?
