Success
Story

Brahane and fellow
student leaders at Moi
University

There was a stage in my life where I had only the interest

of passing my exams. I was never engaged in any extra
curriculur activities that were going on. However, the
introduction of the Junior Achievement in my former
school, Sheikh Khalifa High School, Mombasa gave me an
interest I never had. I participated in the Company Program
which was aimed at giving students an insight on how they
can start their own businesses and run them well. This was a
turning point for me.I was chosen to be the chief executive
officer of the Student run company where I discovered I
had leadership ability. My team participated at the 2012
Company Program Competitions hosted at Allidina Visram
High School where we were first runners up in the Biashara
Award Category (Best Overall Student Enterprise).

My K.C.S.E results were out and I managed to score an Aand I was admitted to Moi University to pursue Economics.
My aggressiveness made my classmates to appoint me as
the class representative where I had the privilege to lead
my class and get in touch with several lecturers who later
became my mentors.
Junior Achievement also gave knowledge on financial
literacy and work readiness. After high school, I got an
internship opportunity within JA to support programs
at the Coast region .Being an alumnus, I had an idea
on how to conduct some of the work.I went to several
schools to educate them on entrepreneurship through the
company program.I also got an opportunity to interact
with many students and teachers who helped build my
network and also build my capacity to interact with
people. Moreover, working in an office environment built
my understanding on how to have office ethics and build
databases where I filled in data. The internship built me into
someone I never thought I would be.I was now determined
more than ever to succeed and learn more and more.

This was just a stepping stone for me.In the

University, elections were being held every year to choose
student leaders who would be incharge of running the
university with the help of the administration.I was at
first hesistant because everyone ,me included, viewed it as
a position designated for only the brilliant students and it
felt unreachable.Later I decided to give it a try.It was the
most trying time of my life because I had less resources
to campaign among the ten thousand students of Moi
University.Nevertheless, the zeal in me made me to push
on.My friends helped me get funds to produce the posters
and the banners for the campaigns.I went door to door to
ask for votes and laying out my manifesto to the students.I

had worthy competitors and hence I could not even rest for
a second.
The elections were held after a month and I gannered more
votes than my competitors.I was sworn in the next day and
from then on so many students looked up to me.Together,I
and the other student leaders made sure that the students
got access to all university equipment and their learning
environment was conducive. This built my network and
I got the chance to interact with the chancellor of the
University and other administrators.
I had applied a scholarship to Africa Leadership University
in Mauritius.Even though the selection process was
rigorous, they selected me among thousands of applicants.
From there,I intend to work extra hard to achieve my
dreams.
This is a testimony of how Junior Achievement has
impacted me in a manner that I could have not imagined.
