Section A
Attempt the followings(10x2=20)
a) ExplainIsentropicefficiencyofcompressorandturbine.
b) ExplainCoefficientofvolumeexpansion,AdiabaticandIsothermalcompressibility.
c) Define Heat of formation and Adiabatic flame temperature.
d) What is Equivalent evaporation and Boiler efficiency?
e) What is the difference between Impulse Turbine and Reaction Turbine and what is
compounding of steam turbine?
f) What do you mean by Draught and give its classifications.
g) What is Indicator diagram and diagram factor?
h) Explain Saturation curve and Missing quantity in steam engine.
i) Explain Convergent and convergent-divergent nozzle
Section B

Attempt any FIVE of the following

(5x10=50)
2. Explain the function of steam nozzles, state its types and derive the expression for the
calculation of steam velocity at the exit of the nozzle with the help of steady flow energy
equation. In a steam nozzle, superheated steam at a pressure of 20 bar and a temperature
of 250 C expands adiabatically to an exit pressure of 15 bar. If the mass flow rate of
steam is 15 kg/Sec, calculate the velocity of steam at the exit of the nozzle (neglecting
the inlet velocity), and exit area of the nozzle.
3. Explain inversion curve and JouleThompson coefficient. Derive the expression for
ClausiusClapeyronEquation?
4. A steam power plant operates on a theoretical reheat cycle. Steam at 25 bar pressure and
400C is supplied to high pressure turbine. After its expansion to dry state, the steam is
reheated at constant pressure to its original temperature. Subsequent expansion occurs in
the low pressure turbine to a condenser pressure of 0.04 bar. Considering feed pump
work, Determine (i) quality of steam at the entry to condenser (ii) thermal efficiency (iii)
specific steam consumption.
5. In an open-cycle-constant-pressure gas turbine, air enters the compressor at pressure of 1
bar and temperature of 25C,and is compressed up to a pressure of 42 bar. The isentropic
efficiencies of compressor and turbine are 80% and 85% respectively. The peak cycle
temperature is 1045 K.
Assuming = 1.4, both for air and gases and Cp = 1005 kJ/kg-K, determine:(i)
The Power Developed
(ii)
The thermal efficiency.

6. How you can improve the efficiency of the gas turbine cycle by showing cycle P-v and
T-s diagram? (any two methods).
7. Show that for maximum discharge through a convergent divergent nozzle, the ratio of
throat pressure at inlet pressure is given by (2 / n+1) n / n-1, where n is index of expansion
through the nozzle
8. What is the difference between boiler mountings and accessories. With the help of a neat
sketch, explain the working of Water tube Boiler?
9. What do you mean by condenser? What are the different types of condenser? Explain any
one type of condenser with neat sketch?

Section C
Attempt any TWO of the followings(2x15=30)
10. Expalin modified Rankine cycle?
A steam turbine working on Rankine cycle is supplied with dry saturated steam at 25 bar
and the exhaust takes place at 0.2 bar. For a steam flow rate of 10 kg/sec, determine for a
theoretical cycle :
(i)
quality of steam at end of expansion,
(ii)
turbine shaft work
(iii)
power required to drive the pump
(iv)
work ratio
(v)
Rankine efficiency.
11. Derive the relation of chimney height and diameter.
Determine the height of chimney required for producing a draught equivalent to 15mm of
water, if the flue gases temperature is 525K and ambient temperature is 25C and
minimum 18 kg air per kg of fuel is required.
12. With neat sketch explain
(i)
Turboprop engine
(ii)
Rocket engine
