7 Method for Conducting Internal Tank Surface Preparation.

Surface preparation shall be by specified standard approved in GP 56-02-03 and in
accordance with abrasive blast cleaning in ExxonMobil.
1. Surface to be treated shall be free from oil or grease prior to abrasive blast cleaning
(SSPC SP1).
2. Surface programmed for blast shall be examined to determine its acceptability for the
specified work.
3. Welds shall finally be checked for defects and grinding where required; and accepted
by the client.
4. All equipments should be in good condition, grit clean and dry. All blast pots shall
have current pressure test certification.
5. The abrasive size and type shall be MPN approved quality grit; this shall be clean
and dry.
6. Blasting operations are not permitted if the steel temperature is less than 50F (10C)
above the air dew point or if the surface is wet or there is the possibility that the
surface will be subject to wetting before the primer coat can be applied.
7. Abrasive blast cleaning to surface profile of SSPC SP 5, removing all rust, mill scale,
corrosion products be removed, and recorded accordingly.
8. Clean out dust on metal surface, if present, using air blower free from water and oil
molecules to avoid contaminations. The compressed air supplied for blasting
operations shall be dry and free of water and oil.
9. Evaluation and acceptance standard of blasted surface profile must be done, using
calibrated surface profile gauge in accordance to referencing code and written
procedures.
10. Waste products from blasting are subsequently collected and disposed as per the
company waste disposal procedure.
11. Daily work output of every activity carried out during and after the abrasive cleaning
shall be recorded and signed off by the MPN Company site representative prior to
close out.
