Problem Solving Method

The Problem solving method is a process in which students work on
solving a problem. The students are given a problem, they are to find a
proven solution to the problem and finally draw a conclusion.
Advantages
1. Students are active in the lesson.
2. The activities may generate enthusiasm and interest in the
students.
3. Students are trained to organize their own learning.
4. It changes the attitude of the students to knowledge. They get
new knowledge.
5. Gifted and brilliant students benefit a lot from this method.
Disadvantages
1. It is time consuming.
2. It can be demanding on the teacher as students may discover
series of facts and raise questions which may embarrass illprepared teachers.

3. Slow students may be at a disadvantage.

4. It is not possible to use this method in all situations.
Team Teaching
Team teaching is an instructional technique in which teachers get
together to plan, implement and evaluate a teaching activity. The
teaching may be those handling one subject or related subjects. It is
based on the fact that teachers have their own area of specialization
or content mastery. It also recognizes the fact that teachers vary in
experiences.

Advantages
1. It encourages the spirit of cooperation among the teachers and
other workers in the school.
2. The teachers are exposed to good teaching because they are
taught by the expert teachers in the schools.
3. All the students in the class are exposed to the same teaching by
the expert teacher.
4. The students come in close contact with the expert teacher.
5. It allows for efficient use of the school staff. The expert teacher
teaches the larger classes. He is supported by the other teachers
in the team who give re-enforcement.

Disadvantages
1. Team teaching requires teachers with training and disposition to
engage in team work. Many teachers may not have the qualities
and the end result may be a poor performance.
2. Special facilities are required for team teaching. The provision of
such facilities may be expensive.
3. The technique requires constant meeting.
Lecture Method
Lecture method is a process whereby the teacher verbally delivers a
pre-planned body of knowledge to his students. The teacher talks
while the students listen and write down points. In some cases, the
teacher may entertain questions to emphasize some points or make
some points clearer.
Advantages
1. It can be used to cover a wide area of study within a short period.
2. The teacher can teach a large population of students at once.
3. The method does not give the students opportunity for oral
communication.
4. In lecture method, the students understanding is judged by mere
assumptions by the teacher. As the teacher speaks, he is of the
opinion that the students follow and understand.

Discussion Method
Discussion method gives room to students to air their view on a
particular topic. The teacher gives a topic and throws it open for
students to answer. Before the teacher gives the topic, he should
know that the topic can be viewed from different perspectives.
Advantages
1. The method encourages students to listen, think and critically
evaluate points made.
2. Students learn from each other.
3. It gives students opportunity to practice their oral
communication skills.
4. It gives students training in respecting others view.
Disadvantages
1. It cannot be used in all topics and subjects, particularly
mathematics and science.
2. Unlike lecture method, it is not ideal for a large class.
3. While brighter and vocal students may find it as an avenue for
show off, the shy ones find it uneasy to argue convincingly in the
group.
