IfyouareusingUbuntu15.04+,manyissuesarenowsolved,sothereisnoneedtofollowthis
guideexceptifyouareusinganyUbuntuversionolderthan15.04.Dependingontheversionyou
areusing(12.04,14.04,14.10)youmightneedallorsomeofthestepsprovidedinthisanswer.
Ifhowever,youareusing15.04+,rejoice!,inalltestsIhavedonewith15.04+therewasnoneed
todoanyofthestepsmentionedhere,soenjoyUbuntuinallofit'sbootingglory!.
Fortherest,beforeexplainingthestepstodoit,IwanttobeclearthatIhavetriedmanywaysof
installingUbuntuwithversionsolderthan15.04(Oranyotherdistroforthatmatter)fromwithin
Windows8.Noluck.MicrosoftWindowsreallycreatedabigmessforallLinuxdistributions.If
youhaveapreinstalledWindows8system,youwillprobablyneverbeabletoinstallUbuntuor
anyotherOSinthenormal(LiveCD/LiveUSB)orWubiway.ThisisbecauseWindows8
introducedseveralnewfeatures,ofwhich2are:
UEFIwhichsubstituteswhatwehaveknownastheBIOS(analternativeto)
SecureBootwhichpreventsanythingbuttheinstalledoperatingsystem,inthiscase
Windows8frombooting.ThisisnolongerthecaseforUbuntusince12.04.2
OnafurthernoteIwanttomentionsomethingaboutSecureBoottakenfromtheUEFIWiki
SecureBoot
"SecureBoot"isanewUEFIfeaturethatappearedin2012,withWindows8preinstalled
computers.Ubuntusupportsthisfeaturestartingwith12.1064bit(seethisarticle)and12.04.264
bit,butasPCsimplementingsupportforithaveonlybecomewidespreadattheendof2012itis
notyetwidelytested,soit'spossiblethatyoumayencounterproblemsbootingUbuntuunder
SecureBoot.
IMPORTANT:Ifyoudofindabug,pleasefileabugreportagainsttheshimpackageinUbuntu,
preferablyusingthecommand:
ubuntubugshim

onceyou'veinstalledwithSecureBootdisabled.Asmentionedbyslangasek:
ItisnotrequiredtodisableSecureBootinthefirmwaretoinstallUbuntuonaWindows8
machine.Ubuntu12.04.2and12.10areSecureBootcompatible.Anymachinethatshipswith
therecommendedMicrosoftThirdPartyMarketplacekeysinfirmwarewillbeabletoboot
UbuntuunderSecureBoot.Ifthereisanyproblemfilealaunchpadbugfortheshimpackage.
IalsowanttonotifythatIspendthisweektesting15.04andhadanexcellentoutcome.Of12
Laptops(4Toshibas,3HP&5Lenovo)whereWindows8.1waspreinstalled,onallcases,
UbuntudetectedtheWindowsBootManagercorrectly,gavetheoptiontoinstallalongside
Windows8.1(ItactuallysaidInstallalongsideWindowsBootManager)andsolvedanyissues
thatappearedonpreviousUbuntuversions.Ibasicallydidnothavetodoanythingelseonthis
cases.ThiswaswithSecureBootonandonanEFIenabledbootsystem.
Thisdoesnotmeanthatinyourcasesitwillworkperfectly,itjustmeansthatonmycases,Ihad
a100%UbuntuPerfectinstallation.Again,with15.04(Onallcasesitwas64bit).
Sowithallofthissaid,installingUbuntuviaWUBIisnotdoable(notrecommendedatleastfrom
me),thingsliketryingtobootforexamplewiththeWindows8bootloaderarenotpossibleright
nowunlesssomethingchangesinthefuture(Therearealsosomebugsrelatedtothisin
launchpad,liketheonementionedbybcbc ).Apartfromthis,WUBIdoesnotworkfromwithin
Windows8ifyouhaveUEFIwithaGPTPartition(NotMSDOStypepartition).PleasreadDoes
UEFIsupportmeanWubiwillnowworkonlaptopsshippedwithWindows8?formore
information.
Notonlythat,buttryingtoinstall32bitUbuntuisimpossible.Youneedthe64bitversionfor
everythingtoworkcorrectly.ReadmoreaboutWubiinCanIinstallUbuntuinsideWindows?
ThefollowingisasmallguidetoinstallUbuntuwithaPreInstalledWindows8system.Thesteps
HAVETOBEdoneinthepreciseorderImentionthemheretogeteverythingstarted.Ifastepis
skippedordonebeforeanother,youwillmostlikelyendupwithsomeoftheproblemsmentioned
atthebottomofthisguide.
Forthetime,youneedtodoitviaaLiveCD,LiveDVDorLiveUSB,assuming(actuallyrequiring)
youhavethefollowingpoints:
Youareusinga64bitversionofatleastUbuntu12.04.2.32bitversionswillnotwork.
YoursystemcamewithWindows8preinstalled(Andyoudonotwanttodeleteit)
YouarenotinstallingUbuntuinsideofWindows8butratheralongsideofit.Insideofitis
impossiblebecauseitneedsWubiwhichisunsupported.
YoursystemhasUEFIactivated(Andcannotbedisabled)withSecureBoot.
YouhavealreadycreatedafreespaceforUbuntufromwithinWindows8withatleast8GB
(Irecommendtoleaveatleast20GBorso,soyoucantestthehelloutofit).
Youmadesurethatyouactuallyhavefreespaceleftonthedrivetocreatetheneeded
partitionsandyoualsomadesurethatyoudidnothaveallprimarypartitionsused(Incase
ofusinganMSDOSScheme)becausethiswillcreateaproblemwiththeUbuntuinstaller

ofusinganMSDOSScheme)becausethiswillcreateaproblemwiththeUbuntuinstaller
showingyouonlythe"ReplaceWindows"optioninsteadofthe"AlongsideWindows"option.
YouknowhowtoburnaLiveCD,LiveDVDorLiveUSBfromwithinWindows8.Ifnot,look
forWindowsappsthatcandothatforyou.IdomineinanotherPCwithUbuntu^^.
Windows8wasnotshutdownineitherHibernationmodeoranyothermode('faststartup'
whichisbydefaultonWindows8)thatleavesitonasavedstate.ShutdownWindows8in
thenormalway,withtheshutdownoption.Thiswillpreventotherproblemsrelatedtothis
fromappearing.Readthebottom(TROUBLESHOOT)ofthisanswerformoreinformation
regardingthispoint.
YouareinstallingonanMSDOStypediskscheme(Youcanonlyhave4primarypartitions
asopposedtoGPTScheme)whichhasatleast1FreePrimaryPartition.Rememberthatif
youarealreadyusing4PrimaryPartitionsnopartitionswillappearontheUbuntuinstaller
sincetherearenomorePrimarypartitionslefttouse(MSDOStypepartitionsarelimitedto
4Primaryones,GPTarelimitedto128).Thishappensalotonmanylaptopsthatcomewith
4precreatedprimarypartitions.IfyouareinstallingonaGPTtypepartitionandwantitto
boot,youneedtoleaveUEFIenabled.
PLEASEREADTHEABOVEPOINTSSINCEMANYUSERSJUMPTHISPARTANDWHEN
THEIRPROBLEMSAREFOUNDITNORMALLYISBECAUSETHEYDIDNOTFOLLOW
ONEOFTHEM.
Beforewestartweneedtodothefollowing:
Runcompmgmt.msconWindows8.Fromthereon,createapartitionwithenoughsize.Note
thatImentioncreatingthisFROMWindows8becauseIhavehadcaseswheredoingthe
partitionfromtheLiveUSBrenderedWindows8unbootable,evenafterdoingabootrepair.Soto
removethatproblemorhaveagreaterchanceofremovingit(Orsimplyskippingtheproblem
altogether)andmakingsurebothsystemswork,partitionyourharddrivefromwithinWindows8
first.
NowfollowthisstepstohaveaworkingWindows8+Ubuntuinstalledonyoursystem:

Windows8+Ubuntu
Wefirstneedtoknowwithwhattypeofmotherboardoptionswearedealingwith.Openaterminal
(Bygoingtothestartmenuandtyping powershell forexample)andruntheterminalasan
Administrator(RightClicktheappthatwillshowinthestartmenuandselectRunas
Administrator).Nowtype ConfirmSecureBootUEFI .Thiscangiveyou3results:
TrueMeansyoursystemhasSecurebootandisEnabled
FalseMeansyoursystemhasSecurebootandisDisabled
CmdletnotsupportedonthisplatformMeansyoursystemdoesnotsupportSecureboot
andmostlikelyyoudonotneedthisguide.YoucaninstallUbuntubysimplyinsertingtheLiveCD
orLiveUSBanddoingtheinstallationprocedurewithoutanyproblems.
IfyouhaveitEnabledandhavethenecessarypartitioningdonethenwecanproceedwiththis
guide.AfterbootingintoWindows8wegotothepoweroffoptionsandwhileholdingthe SHIFT
key,clickonRestart.

Whenyougetthemenuabove,selectTroubleshoot
Youwillthengetthefollowingoptions:

SelectUEFIFirmwareSettings
NOTEIntheSpanishversionofWindows8,theoptionforUEFIFirmwareSettingsisnot
availableinseverallaptops,testedLenovo,HPandAcer.Theydohaveanoptiontobootthe
computerandanothercustommenuwillappearwhichletsyoudoacoupleofthings.Inthecase
ofLenovoyouwillnothaveanoptiontoinstallUbuntuwithWindows8,theonlyoptionisto
removeWindows8completely.Thisonlyappliesifyouarenotusing15.04+.
THISISANIMPORTANTPART
ThesystemwillrebootandyouwillbeallowedtogototheBIOS(Ifnotpresstheappropriate
key,somecommonare DEL , F2 or F10 ).
InthispartIcan'thelpmuchsinceeachBIOSisdifferentforeachMotherboardmodel.Thereare
2optionsyoucantakehere,bothofwhichareoptionalsinceUbuntumightinstallwithoutany
problemsatall.YoucaneitherlookforanoptiontodisableSecureBootoranoptiontodisable
UEFI.Insomecasesyouwillbeabletofindboth,itwillshowintheBIOSasanoptioncalled
SecureBootorEnableUEFI.
Ifyoufindthisoptions,thendependingifyoucannotinstallUbuntuwithSecureBootenablethen
disableSecureBoot(Remembertoreportthisasabugusing ubuntubugshim ),tobeabletostill
stayinUEFImodeandalsobeabletoBootwithUbuntu.Insomemotherboards,thiswillbethe
onlyoptionyouactuallyneedtochangeandalsowillbetheonlyoptionyouseerelatedtoUEFI
becausetheywillnotofferthepossibilitytodisableUEFI.
DUALBOOTISSUES
Iwouldalsoliketomentionanimportantnotehere.IfyouhappentoinstallUbuntuinLegacy
Mode(NoSecureBoot)youmighthaveproblemsbootingboth,WindowsandUbuntuatthesame
timesincetheywillbothnotappearonaDualBootMenu.IfyouhaveWindowsonUEFIfor
exampleandyouinstallUbuntuonLegacyMode,youwillonlybeabletoboottoUbuntuona
LegacyModeandWindowsonanUEFIMode.
Sobeforeproceeding,makesurethatyouareinstallingUbuntuwiththesamebootoptionsas
Windows.Thiswayyouwillbeabletochoosewhichonetobootfrominthesamebootmenuand
notworryifonewillworkornot.FromtheUbuntuUEFIGuideyoucanseethatthereisasection
thatteachesyouhowtoknowifyouactuallyinstalledUbuntuinthesameBootsetupas
Windows(UEFIMode):
AnUbuntuinstalledinEFImodecanbedetectedthefollowingway:
its/etc/fstabfilecontainsanEFIpartition(mountpoint:/boot/efi)
itusesthegrubefibootloader(notgrubpc)

SoifyouhaveANYdualbootproblems,thiscouldbetheproblem.PleasereadtheUbuntuUEFI
GuidesinceitcoversvariouswaysonsolvingDualbootproblemsandconvertingUbuntuto
LegacyorEFImode.IhavealreadytestedthiswithvariousAskUbuntumembersthathelpedme
apartfrom2LaptopsIwasprovidedwithforthetesting.ThisshouldthensolveanyDualBoot
problemsrelatedtoWindows8+Ubuntu,butIagainencourageanyonewithproblems(sameor
new)tofileabugreportasmentionedabove.TheUbuntuDevelopersareworkingveryhardin
providinganeasytoinstallsolutionforallcasesandthisisoneofthetoppriorities.
Continuingwiththeguide,inothermotherboardsthatdoofferthepossibilitytodisableUEFI
whichwouldcompletelyeliminateUEFIandSecureBootonitandbootinthenormalBIOSlike
way,ifyoufindthisisthewayyouwant(TohaveaUEFIfreecomputerandnotfaceanyofthe
problemsrelatedtothis)thenbyallmeansdoit.IforonehavetestedtheIntelDZ68DBanddid
bothcasestudies.RememberthatdoingsowillmaketheDualBootprocessnotworkinalmost
allcasesyouwillbeleftwithasystemthateitherBootWindowsinUEFIorBootsUbuntuin
Legacy.
Withthatinmind,remembertoalsoselecttheBootOrdertomakesurethatitbootseitheryour
CDROM,DVDROMorUSBDrivesoyoucanbootfromyourLiveUbuntuimageafterrebooting.
Somepointsweshouldconsiderbeforecontinuing:
1. IfWindows8wasinstalledwithUEFIenabled,itishighlyrecommendedtostayinUEFI,
althoughifyoustillwanttodisableitforspecificreasonsyoucan,GRUBwillcreatethe
bootablepartforWindows8.ButifyoudodisableUEFIandwanttoaccessWindows8
afterwards(beforeinstallingUbuntu),itwillnotworksincethebootpartforWindows8needs
UEFI(AgaintheDualBootproblem).
2. IfyouonlydisableSecureBoot,thereisnoprobleminsomecases.Youareonlydisabling
thepartthatcreatesthemostproblembetweenWindowsandLinux,whichistheonethat
preventsUbuntufrombootingcorrectly.Ineithercase,Iencourageyoutofirsttrytoinstall
UbuntuwithUEFI/Secureboot,sinceinmostcasesitwillwork.ifyoudisableanyofthem
andinstallUbuntu,youmightnotbeabletoboottoWindows8afterwardsthroughtheGRUB
BootMenu.
Nowbeforesaving,somemotherboardsofferaBootModeoption.Verifythatthisoptionisnot
pointingtoUEFIBootbutinsteadtoCSMBoot(CompatibilitySupportModule)whichprovides
supportforLegacyBIOSlikesystems.
OthersystemsofferaUEFIBootoptionyoucanenableordisable.DependingontheoptionsI
mentionedaboveyoucansetthistotheoneyouwant.
AndlastlyothersofferaUEFI/LegacyBootFirstoptionwhereyouselectwhichoneyouwishto
usefirst.Obviouslytheoptionisselfexplanatory.
Nowsavethechangesandreboot.
WhentheUbuntuLiveimagestarts,itwillshowratherdifferentthanthenormaloneweareall
usedto.Donotworry,thisisbecauseUbuntuhasanalternativebootoptionwhenasystemhas
EFIinstalled.Justselecteverythinglikeyouareusedto.Ihighlyrecommendreadingthe
followingarticleintheUbuntusiteregardingUbuntuinstallationswhenusingUEFI.Ifthereisa
problem,thentrytocreateasmallpartition(About250MBofsize)fortheEFIpartofthesystem.
Thisisdoneintheinstallationpartwhereitasksyouifyouwanttoinstallonadesiredpartitionor
usedtheAdvancedOptions.Selecttheadvancedoptionsifyoucomeupwithaproblem.In
there,createa250MBpartitionforEFIandtherestforGRUBandotherstuffyouare
accustomedto.
Ithinkuptohereyoushouldbefineandhaveavoidedseveralproblemstypicallyfoundwhen
tryingUbuntuwithWindows8whichare:
NotbootingaLiveCD/LiveDVD/LiveUSB/Wubi
NotinstallingUbuntubecauseofsecurityissues(Yeahright,morecorrectlymonopoly
issues)
NotbootingeitherWindows8orUbuntu(notshowingeitheroneofthem)
NotlettingUbuntucreateapartition
NotrecognizingtheEFIpartofthesystem
UbuntunotrecognizingWindows8Partition
NotseeingGRUBandbootingdirectlytoWindows
Windows8notbootingorreadablebecauseorpartitionchangesdonefromUbuntu

TROUBLESHOOTING
YOURCOMPUTERBOOTSDIRECTLYTOWINDOWS
ThisisacommonproblemandifyoudonotgetaGRUBmenu,reinstallingorrepairing
grubwillNOTHELP
EveryBIOS/EFIsystemisdifferent,itmightlooklikeoneofthefollowingpictures:

Noticethe"UEFIBootOptionPriority"or"BootOptionMenu".UsuallyWindowsisthedefault
andUbuntu(orasinthesecondpictureelementaryOS)willbeanoption.
OnceyouselectUbuntuontheUEFIbootmenuyouwillthengetagrubmenu.Youshouldbe
abletobooteitherUbuntuorWindowsfromthegrubmenu.
AnotherissuethatcouldmakethesystembootdirectlytoWindows(withoutevenshowingthe
GRUBmenu)isifeitherWindowstookholdofthebootmanagerorafterinstallingUbuntu,the
EFIpartitionwasnotproperlyconfiguredforWindows.Tosolvethis,simplygotoWindowsand
openaterminal,thentypethefollowing(NeedAdministrativePrivileges):
bcdedit/set{bootmgr}path\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

ThiswillconfiguretheWindowsBootManagertotakeintoconsiderationtheGRUBBoot
Manager.ThiscouldstillhappenevenafterrunningtheBootRepairfromwithinUbuntu.So
makingsurethatWindowsreadstheUbuntuEFIpartition,incaseyouareusinganEFIboot
systeminsteadoftheoldBIOSwillsolveit.
Windows8.1NotRecognized/UbuntunotshowingoptiontoInstallAlongside
Ifyouhavefollowedallthestepsaboveincludingmakingapartitionaheadoftimethrough
Windows8.x,proceedwiththenormalUbuntuinstallation.Whenyouarriveattheoptiontohow
youwouldliketoinstallit,ifyoudonotseetheoptiontoinstallAlongsideofit,select"Something
Else"insteadofwipingtheharddrive.Configurethenewpartitionlayoutontheemptyspace
you'vesetasidethatisn'tWindows8.
Youneedtocreateatleast1partitionfortherootsystem(Whichshowsasthesymbol"/")and
setittoExt4,anotherforSWAP(VirtualMemory).TheSWAPspacecanbeassmallas128MB
ifyouhavealotoframorashighas4GB.Withthis2partitionscreatedbasedontheempty
spaceyouprovidedyoushouldbereadytoproceed.AndonelastonefortheEFIpartwhich

Whentheinstalleraskswheretoputthebootloader,tellittoputitonthepartitionwiththetype
"efi".ThiswillinstallGRUBwhichwillloadonceyoursystemstartsinthefuturewhichwillgive
youthechoiceofgoingwithUbuntu(orwhateverflavorisinstalled)orgoingtotheWindowsBoot
ManagerwhichwilltakeyoutoWindows8.
Iwouldalsorecommendreadingthefollowinglinkstogetadditionalinformationofsomeissues
andcausesinthisparticularpart:

Howtousemanualpartitioningduringinstallation?
REPAIRINGTHEBOOT
Afterfinishingtheinstallation,ifyouhappentohaveWindows8disabledfrombootinganditonly
bootstoUbuntu,donotworry.InUbuntuafteritboots,installBootRepairinUbuntubyopeninga
Terminalandtypingthefollowing:
sudoaddaptrepositoryppa:yannubuntu/bootrepair
sudoaptgetupdate
sudoaptgetinstallbootrepair
bootrepair

BootRepairwillmentionthatwehavesomeGRUBerror,thatwehaveanEFIsystemandthat
Ubunturocks.SinceUbunturocks(ItdoesnotworkifUbuntudoesnotrock!^^),justclickon
Applysobootrepairfixeseverything.NowrebootandyoushouldseeWindows8andUbuntu
sidebyside.
Forcaseswithrarebootingproblems,partitioningorusingoldharddrivesonnewermotherboard,
yoursolutionmightbecheckingoutFixParts whichsolvesmisalignedpartitionsandother
partitionedtypeproblems.
Ifyouareexperiencingoneofthefollowingissues:
LoosingDatawhencopyingfromUbuntutoWindows8aftershuttingdownWindows8
CannotaccessyourWindowspartitionsfromUbuntugettingaDiskcontainsanunclean
filesystem
ThisismostlikelythecauseofanoptioninWindows8calledFastStartupwhichbehaves
similartohibernationandkeepsasnapshotofthesystemsowhenyoubootup,itwillload
faster.Sinceitkeepsasnapshot,anythingyoucopyorchangeinWindows8fromUbuntu

Ifyourcomputercomespreinstalledwith64bitWindows8thenyouneedtobootubuntuusing
thesecurebootoption.Inotherwords,whenyouareatthebootmenu,choosetobootthedrive

rebootafterinstallusingthediskandthendoabootrepair.
