Final Draft: Reality Shows

Switch on the television at any time of a day, you are almost sure to find reality shows. Chances are that

you have watched at least once, one of these shows. What is it about reality show that have made them so

popular and grabbed our attention? These reality shows must be interesting and impressive. Recreational,

entertainment and management are three main categories in reality shows.

The first category in reality show is management. In management, there are several advantages that

always been seen in reality show. Firstly, skill of leadership will be enhance by the contestants in any program

since this skill is important in managing tasks. Based on the article written by NBC, in The Apprentice, every

contestant will show their leadership skill to manage the given tasks. Secondly, they will have a wider job

opportunity. The show is presented as a job search, in which the prize of the winner includes a contract to

perform the job. Thirdly, skill enhancement is another advantage of having reality shows. The competition

revolves around the skill that contestants were per-screened for. Competitors perform a variety of tasks based

around that skill, are judged, and then are kept or remove by experts. Some reality shows help contestants and

viewers as well on their skill of management.

The next category of reality show is entertainment. Why it is very popular when it comes to

entertainment? Reality shows have the potential to discover new talent in their contestants. Based on the article

written by Dennis Chua from New Straits Times, Norman Halim, the principal for Akademi Fantasia 8 says,

“My predecessors have done a great job in coaching their students and discovering new stars in Malaysian

music, acting and hosting.” Secondly, reality shows can also improve entertainment industry because many

celebrities with qualities are born. Thirdly, reality shows will attract more viewers since they are unique and

interesting. These are the criteria that have made reality shows in entertainment to be popular.

The third popular category of reality shows is recreation. There are few factors that urge people to join

this kind of reality show. Firstly, they can practice to survive in any difficulty. Contestants in The Survivor

would be so tough since they have to survive with limited sources of living. Secondly, it can also help the
contestants to be great while dealing with physical and mental challenges. These reality shows also give impacts

to the viewers itself. Based on the article written by Fazleena Aziz, Mr. Azlan, the coach for The Tiger Futbol

Star said, “Hopefully through the show they will become good role models to other children”. These are the

factors to have recreational type of reality shows.

In a nutshell, there are three main categories in reality shows which are management, entertainment and

recreational. Many advantages can be gain from it because of the improvements in the industries. We think this

of program should be improved and supported so that these kinds of programs will create more quality artists

and apprentices. Broadcasting companies should have varieties of reality shows such as a chef-to-be

competition which will not just gives chances for the contestants to improve their skills of cooking but can also

let the viewers learn how to cook. This idea will totally give positive impacts to the broadcasting companies as

well of the viewers.
