Course Prerequisites
Admission to the University of Central Florida and Junior standing. Classes in the College of Business
Career Professionalism series are designed to be taken in sequence.
Overview & Course Learning Objectives
GEB 3003 is one of four, one-credit classes in the Career Professionalism series taken by undergraduates in
UCFs College of Business Administration. After taking these four classes, students should be able to:
Plan and execute career-related actions based on facts about skills and interests, target career,
and relevant job market;
Source and secure professional career opportunities based on an understanding of how
contemporary recruiting works;
Tell your story relating past coursework, internships, part-time jobs, and life experiences to
the requirements of the specific job wanted;
Look, sound, and act professional in interactions with others.
GEB 3003: Career Research and Planning
Students will take an assessment to identify career-related skills and interests. Based on their
results, they will perform research to identify and learn about a target career, target
company(ies), and target entry-level jobs. The class will end with an introduction to recruiting
and the preparation of their resume.
The learning outcomes of GEB 3003 are:
1. Students will use knowledge and understanding of their career traits and interests to identify a
target career and understand the qualifications required to work in their target career.
2. Students will identify companies that recruit and employ people in their target career.
3. Students will know how to develop a professional resume.
Assignments and Grading Points
See the Class Calendar at the end of this syllabus for quiz and assignment due dates. Your performance
in the Career Professionalism series will be assessed with:

Career Project Details of the Career Research Project assignments are available in the Career

To calculate your grade simply divide your total course points by 200. Seriously, thats it. Dont rely on
Webcourses. If you have a question about your grade, you will need to include the points youve earned
in the email. DO NOT just email me and say your grade is incorrect.
Career Project
In GEB 3003 you will complete your first Career Project, the Career Research Project. This self-directed
assignment is worth 200 points and designed to help you make an informed decision about what you
want to do after graduation. Please refer to the Career Research Project document available in
Webcourses for details.
Books
The following books are assigned to help you with the Career Project:
1. Metzler, Alysse, The Recruiting Snitch, Career Innovations LLC, 2013 (will be used in GEB 3005 as
well)
2. Pollak, Lindsey, Getting from College to Career, HarperBusiness, 2013
Since these are not traditional textbooks but business books available where most books are sold, you
are encouraged to secure them however you like.

Career Professionalism Speaker Series Fridays @ 10am, BA1 (107)

Unlike most classes in the College of Business, there is no regularly scheduled lecture in this class.
Instead, students must register for and attend ONE presentation in the Career Professionalism Speaker
Series. Topics include career development presentations by subject matter experts and employer
panelists. Students may attend ANY presentation that they feel meets their needs. However, due to
room limitations, in-person attendance is limited to just one presentation per semester. Students who
sign up for multiple lectures for any reason will have their reservations canceled. Presentations will be
recorded and available in Webcourses by clicking the Panopto Videos button/link.
The only exception to this class attendance requirement is if the student can document enrollment in a
UCF class that meets at the same time (Fridays, 10-11am) and also mandates perfect attendance.
To reserve your seat at a presentation:
Select the Career Professionalism Speaker Series link in Webcourses.
Review the schedule, select ONE presentation that you like, and register to attend it using the
link provided. Students may attend ANY presentation on the list.
You will receive a confirmation email and ticket from Eventbrite. Print your ticket and bring it
to class with you on the day of your lecture.
If you cannot attend the presentation, you must cancel your reservation by noon on Thursday
before the presentation. You may do so using the cancellation link in your confirmation email or
by logging in to your Eventbrite account.
If you wait to register for a lecture and there are no seats available your only option will be to
try and attend as a walk-up as outlined below. If you cannot get in to a lecture you WILL NOT
fulfill this class requirement, and WILL have points deducted from your grade for missing
lecture. REGISTER EARLY AND SHOW UP ON TIME.
The day of your presentation:
Dress code for the Career Professionalism Speaker Series is business professional or business
casual. If you are not dressed properly, you WILL NOT be allowed to attend lecture, will not be
allowed to sign up for an additional lecture, and will receive the No Show penalty.
Students with a reserved seat may check in starting at 9am and up to 15 minutes before lecture
(9:45am) to claim their seat. Students who have a reservation, but do not bring their ticket may
be asked to wait to enter and risk losing their seat.
Students without a reservation may walk-up the day of the presentation to claim unused seats
on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are asked to form a line outside BA1 (107) and wait
to be admitted.
Students who reserve a seat for a presentation but miss the presentation or do not check in will
be penalized as noted above (How to lose points) Note: Penalized students may NOT make
a second reservation for another presentation, but can earn the points back if they are able to
walk-in to a later presentation.
Students with a reserved seat who are late (arrive after 9:45am) will lose their seat, but can wait
with the other walk-ups for an available seat. If the student is able to walk-in, the penalty will
not be assessed.
If you are late and dont get to attend the presentation you registered for, you will be assessed
the No Show penalty and CAN NOT make up your absence (and the penalty) by registering for
a later lecture. You may only make up these points as a walk-up.

In all cases, the doors will close at 10am and the presentation will start. No one is allowed to
enter a presentation after it starts.
DO NOT WAIT until the last minute to make a reservation. If we get to the end of the semester
and you are not able to attend a presentation, you will be penalized as noted above.
NOTE: Attending lecture is NOT an approved activity for credit in other College of Business classes.
Videos, Articles, Reports/Whitepapers, and other Media:
At times, students will make use of videos, articles, and reports either produced or sourced for this class.
Please refer to the Class Calendar and Webcourses for links to these resources. Additionally, you should
subscribe to and read the Office of Professional Development blog (http://careerpros.wordpress.com)
for additional instructions and suggestions that will help you be successful in this class and in your
career search.
Required Events & Activities
This class is also different from your other classes in that it is action oriented. As such, there are
required activities that you must accomplish to be successful:
1. All students must complete the Career To-DO List assignment as part of their Career Project.
2. All students in GEB 3003 must register for and attend in person ONE lecture in the Career
Professionalism Speaker Series.
3. Since GEB 3003 is the first class in the Career Professionalism series, all students are required to
attend Welcome to the Majors, the College of Businesss signature welcome event. Welcome to
the Majors May 27th, Pegasus Ballroom (Student Union) 10 am 12:00 pm
o Attendance at this event is REQUIRED FOR ALL STUDENT ENROLLED IN GEB 3003.
Attendance will be taken. Doors open at 9:30 am so please arrive at least 30 minutes early
so we can get you in the room and set up!
o You need to register to attend this event at: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/welcome-tothe-majors-summer-2016-featuring-laurette-koellner-registration-24725164633. Sign up so
your attendance can be counted!
o Welcome to the Majors is a unique kick off event to this class and your introduction to the
culture of UCFs College of Business Administration. Despite our size, we want you to be
engaged in the college. Why? The unengaged tend to fail in their initial job search and
subsequent careers. Since these classes are all about helping you succeed in those pesky
tasks, you need to attend (even if youve already been once before!)
Students who do not complete these required activities will lose points as noted above.
Additional Grading Policies
Grades and Statute of Limitations The points you earn for quizzes and assignments will be posted in
Webcourses. University privacy policy prohibits me from giving out grades over the telephone or by
email. Understand that grades posted in Webcourses are unofficial, and are subject to change at the
instructors discretion due to poor participation, excessive absences, or other mitigating circumstances
including unprofessional behavior in class activities or at events. Unless I offer it, there is NO extra
credit. Please dont ask!
Students have two weeks from the time a grade is posted in Webcourses to seek any changes to it.
After that point, the grade is final and will not be changed for any reason. Written assignments that are
questioned will be completely reevaluated by a different individual. Therefore, it is possible that after

being reviewed, assignments can receive a lower grade rather than a higher grade. Please dont send
me notes negotiating for consideration of different answers on quizzes.
Late Submission of Assignments and Make-Up Tests Due to the large number of students in this class,
assignments submitted after the due date will not be accepted, nor can missed quizzes be reopened for
individual students. If you miss a quiz for any reason you may make up the quiz by performing one or
more Career To-DO List activities from the Career Activity List that equal at least TWICE the point
value of the missed quiz. For example, a 20 point quiz can be made up by doing 40 points worth of
Activity:
Select activities in the same way that you would for the Career To-DO List assignment
Complete Verification Forms for each activity and circle Quiz Make Up on each form;
Submit the Verification forms by scanning them and submitting using the Quiz MakeUp
assignment in Webcourses.
Activity(ies) must be completed no later than four weeks after the quiz due date, and will be worth 90%
of the original quizs value. Where the semester doesnt allow four weeks to complete this action, Quiz
Make-Up Verification Forms will be due no later than the due date for the Career To-DO List
assignment. You cannot replace a grade on a quiz nor can the final exam be made up in this or any
fashion.
Deviations from the above rule will only be allowed in extreme or exceptional circumstances. Personal
appointments (weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, interviews, etc.); personal failures (slept in, hung
over, waited until the last minute, wrong calendar); and personal shortcomings (didnt prepare, got lost,
cant find parking) will not constitute an acceptable reason for missing a quiz. Nor will lost internet
connections or your laptop battery taking a dump. Quizzes and assignments are open for multiple days;
be prepared, be careful, and fulfil your responsibilities in a timely manner.
Severe unforeseen illnesses or other true emergencies will be considered (but not necessarily approved)
with proper documentation and sufficient notice. A key behavior of professionals is to schedule and use
time appropriately.
No Show Rule You will have to register for and attend meetings with your Career Coach, small group
sessions, workshops, and special events as part of this class and others in the Career Professionalism
series. Additionally, the College of Business and other groups sponsor a number of events and activities
that draw alumni, business leaders, employers, and our sponsoring partners. You are encouraged to
attend any special event that you think will be beneficial to your career development. To that end, you
will sometimes be asked to register for these events by a certain deadline and these registrations will be
used for space and (when appropriate) refreshment planning. In some instances you will be allowed to
reschedule your appointments. In those cases it will be on a space permitting basis. However, due to
the size of the class, appointments and registrations for ALL activities cannot be rescheduled or
cancelled less than 48 hours before the appointment.
If you register for ANY event and fail to attend without communicating with your Instructor AND the
organizer of the event, you will be penalized 10 points. If you are late, you WILL NOT get credit for
attending the event and will be considered a No Show. In other words, not showing up on time carries
the same penalty as not doing your work. If you are assessed THREE NO Show point deductions in one
semester you will NOT be allowed to get points for attending any College of Business or Career
Professionalism class sponsored event or activity.

NOTE: This rule extends to the Career Professionalism Speaker Series, ANY scheduled appointment with
your Career Coach or other members of the Office of Professional Development (even those not
associated with this class), and College of Business sponsored events. Punctuality is a key component in
how your professionalism is evaluated and job seekers who are late for their interview generally do not
get a chance to participate in the interview.
Class Communication Emails and Messages
Please send ALL correspondence regarding the class using the Course Email at the top of this syllabus.
I will use the Announcements board to communicate information to the class so please make sure you
are receiving Announcements in your email. If you have a question about an Announcement, please
send me and the Teaching Assistants a separate email. If you reply to the Announcement I will not see it
until much later and will not reply.
I encourage you to take advantage of office hours for me and the Graduate Teaching Assistants. I am
happy to help with class issues and the TAs can help you with quiz or activity issues.
Please dont try to reach me by my email, phone, LinkedIn, Discussion Board, Vulcan mind meld, or
other medium unless I ask you to do so and please dont double or triple your outreach using different
media because youre freaking out. I try to respond to inquiries, but given the number of students in
these classes, I have to manage the sources of incoming communication. In many cases, the answer to
your question can be found in an Announcement, the Assignment, this syllabus, the class videos, or by
just Googling it. I wont respond to questions where the answer has already been given. Read and learn
to be resourceful!
Class Protocols & Student Expectations
Professionalism The purpose of this class is to help you discover how to look, sound, and behave like a
professional business graduate. You are expected to act in a professional manner in all of your
interactions related to this course; with your fellow students, with employers, with people in the
community you meet as you accomplish your assignments, with staff and faculty in the College of
Business, and with me. Professional social behavior, in terms of what is considered acceptable or
unacceptable, is extremely important. Students who are unprofessional, rude, disrespectful, or impolite
to any of the parties listed will not only be asked to leave, but can lose points at the discretion of the
Instructor. In the event of a disagreement or misunderstanding, students must carefully follow conflict
management processes with the intent of clarifying and resolving issues instead of exhibiting anger,
sarcasm, and impatience.
Students who represent UCF poorly in the public eye while attending an event may also be docked
points or counseled on ways to improve their impression management skills. While out in the
community, be aware that you are representing yourself, the College of Business Administration, and
the University of Central Florida. Conduct yourself in a polite, respectful, professional manner when you
are in the public eye.
Students will have to register for and attend a number of scheduled special events as part of their
participation in this class. You are expected to wear professional business suits to these events. This
attire should be appropriate to wear at a career job interview. When in doubt, keep it simple.

Academic Honesty - All students are considered to be honest and ethical until proven otherwise. Ethical
behavior is extremely important for tomorrows managers and a critical component of professionalism.
As reflected in the UCF creed, integrity and scholarship are core values that should guide our conduct
and decisions as members of the UCF community. Plagiarism and cheating contradict these values, and
so are very serious academic offenses. Penalties can include a failing grade in an assignment or in the
course, or suspension or expulsion from the university. Students are expected to familiarize themselves
with and follow the Universitys Rules of Conduct (see http://www.osc.sdes.ucf.edu/).
In this course when academic misconduct is evident in a students or students actions or submitted
work, the procedure is as follows:
1. The student will be confronted, in person or via email, about the suspected academic misconduct.
2. The student will be asked to provide a signed statement explaining the suspected incident of
academic misconduct.
3. If academic misconduct is found, one of the following actions will be taken:
a. The student will receive 0 points for the assignment for the first incident of academic
misconduct.
b. The student will receive the letter grade F for the course for any additional incidents of
academic misconduct in the course, if there are multiple incidents of academic misconduct
in the same submission, or the incident(s) is deemed to be so severe that more serious
discipline is warranted.
4. For every incident of academic misconduct, a referral to Office of Student Conduct may be filed and
further disciplinary action is possible.
Many incidents of plagiarism result from students lack of understanding about what constitutes
plagiarism. However, you are expected to familiarize yourself with UCFs policy on plagiarism. All
work you submit must be your own scholarly and creative efforts. UCFs Golden Rule defines
plagiarism as follows: whereby anothers work is used or appropriated without any indication of the
source, thereby attempting to convey the impression that such work is the students own.
You are allowed to use resources like reports, books and your notes to complete quizzes and the
exam. This is the same as using available resources to complete a project at work. You are not
allowed to simply use someone elses answers and claim them as your own. That will get you fired at
work and failed in this class.
Turnitin.com When you submit your Career Project Essay in Webcourses, Turnitin.com will check your
work for plagiarism against documents on the Internet as well as against documents submitted by other
students from UCF and other universities. In order to avoid any problems, you are strongly advised to
take great care to do your own work and take precautions to insure it is not stolen by another student.
I may return your assignment to you with a grade before I check Turnitin.com reports. I reserve the
right to reduce your grade at any time if there is evidence of plagiarism or other form of student
misconduct.
Misuse of Technology and IT Etiquette Only appropriate use of laptops, phones, and other technology
is permitted in the classroom. This includes taking notes when it is appropriate to do so. Inappropriate
laptop or phone usage will result in one request to cease activity and then a request to leave the class or

event. If you are asked to leave an event, you will be treated as a No Show (see above). Inappropriate
use of technology on the job (texting, inappropriate Internet usage, excessive use of social media, and
excessive personal phone use) has been cited by employers as one of the top unprofessional behaviors
among employees.
Course Documents Students are responsible for obtaining, reading, and printing the syllabus,
assignment descriptions, and all other course materials found in the Files section our classs
Webcourse.
Disability Access - The University of Central Florida is committed to providing reasonable
accommodations for all persons with disabilities. This syllabus is available in alternate formats upon
request. Students with disabilities who need accommodations in this course must contact the professor
at the beginning of the semester to discuss needed accommodations. No accommodations will be
provided until the student has met with the professor to request accommodations. Students who need
accommodations must be registered with Student Disability Services, Student Resource Center Room
132, phone (407) 823-2371, TTY/TDD only phone (407) 823-2116, before requesting accommodations
from the professor.
Religious Observances - Any student who must miss a class or an assignment due date in accordance
with religious observances should contact me as soon as possible (and certainly before the event) so
that alternative plans can be arranged.
Webcourses Check Webcourses for announcements, team discussions, and for grades. I cannot discuss
grades by telephone or by email due to privacy issues; please meet with me individually.
This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
It is the students responsibility to become aware of any announced changes and
to note any changes in the syllabus or course itinerary.
