the world’s most popular
social networking site may
be putting its worst face
forward.
Facebook’s increasingly
lax privacy settings are
irking many of the web-
site’s 400 million members,
sparking calls to log off for
good.
“They’re basically giving a
take-it-or-leave-it choice to
users. Well, users are leav-
ing, and taking all their in-
formation with them,” said
Ari Schwartz, vice president
of the Center for Democracy
& Technology, which moni-
tors Internet privacy.
The debate has become
so heated that Facebook has
scheduled a company-wide
meeting on privacy today at
its California headquarters,
according to allfacebook.

MTA is hiring while it’s firing
The MTA is hiring more
managers for top dollar even
though it’s giving hundreds
of station agents and other
workers the ax, amNewYork
has learned.
The agency recently post-
ed “help wanted” notices
for three subway cleaning
supervisors who would
earn between $109,100 and
$163,700.
The MTA is set to cut
cleaning crews that sweep
the trains as it scrambles to
fill an $800 million deficit.
“I can’t get over the irony,”
said John Samuelsen, presi-
dent of the Transport Work-
ers Union Local 100.
Recent job vacancies also
included seven managers in
the bus and maintenance
divisions, earning between
$71,500 and $192,900.
The maintenance depart-
ment has about one manager
for every four workers.

‘Clueless’ feds cutting security cash to city despite bomb plot

Millions of dollars in federal
funds to protect straphangers are
being cut, just as fears about the
city’s security have been stoked.
“For the administration to an-
nounce these cuts two weeks
after the attempted Times Square
bombing shows they just don’t get
it,” Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.)
said in a statement yesterday.
Aid under the Transit Secu-
rity Grant Program is being cut 27
percent, from $153 million to $111
million, with the money dedicated
to protecting riders “from acts of
terrorism, major disasters and
other emergencies,” according to
FEMA, which manages funding.
Money for the Port Security
Grant Program, which assists in
guarding waterways from terror-
ism, was reduced 25 percent, from
$45 million to about $34 million.
FEMA did not respond to a re-

‘Passion Play’ needs editing

have very little in common,
except for the fact that
all three were known for
staging religious pageants
depicting the death and
resurrection of Christ.
It’s surprising that no
major off-Broadway com-
pany has mounted Sarah
Ruhl’s “Passion Play,” her
3½-hour cycle exploring
the intersection of faith,
theater and community in
different settings.
This hole has finally
been filled by the Epic
Theatre Ensemble, which
is staging a low-budget
production at a church in
Fort Greene.
All three acts of “Passion
Play” involve a local acting
troupe staging the medi-
eval religious play about
the final days of Christ.

Why did you open a green

pizzeria? I don’t want our
generation to be responsible
for leaving a mess to my kids.
As a chef it’s a natural incli-
nation to use local ingredients
— they’re fresher and better
tasting. There are a couple of
ingredients that are regional,
but the majority are
local, within about
150 miles.
As far as the con-
struction, we want-
ed to take it to the
next level. I had the
opportunity because
we were building
from scratch.
What are some of
the greenest elements? We
use rainwater to grow herbs
in-house. Materials used to
build the space were recycled,
and utensils are made from
material derived from sugar.

most anticipated matches
in American soccer history.
The contest opens play
for Group C, which other-
wise appears
to be one of
the World
Cup’s weak-
est divisions.

match in Rustenburg, South
Africa, the Americans and
the English should lead the
group and reach the tour-
nament’s single-elimination
round of 16.
Group D is considerably
more difficult to predict;
each of the four teams ap-
pears capable of advancing.
Germany, of course,
excels in international tour-
nament play and is favored
to finish first and advance
to the knockout stage. But
the second spot appears to
be up for grabs.
The June 13 meeting in
Pretoria between Serbia
and Ghana will be the key
match for Group D, and Ser-
bia seems to have the edge.
Ghana’s coach, Milovan
Rajevac, is Serbian, which
gives the match some extra
allure.

Pro: England has a squad deep
with world-class talent and, in Fabio
Capello, a taskmaster coach who is a
proven winner. The team went 9-1-0
in qualifying.
Con: It’s fashionable lately to
knock England as overrated. It
failed to make Euro 2008, and the
team has a notorious aversion to
penalty kicks.
Key player: Wayne Rooney dis-
tinguished himself this season as
one of the world’s elite players, but
once again, the 24-year-old striker’s
health has become a national obses-
sion. Rooney’s groin is the concern
this time around.
3 SLOVENIA
Pro: Slovenia showed some grit
in a tough qualifying group, allow-
ing only four goals
to opponents that
included the Czech
Republic and Poland,
before beating Rus-
sia in a two-legged
playoff.
Handanovic Con: Slovenia is
young and inex-
perienced, and lacks a standout
talent up front to trouble opposing
defenses.
Key player: Goalkeeper Samir
Handanovic has been a rock in front
of the goal for Udinese of Italy’s
Serie A.

Pro: The Yanks had a great run in
last summer’s Confederations Cup
in South Africa, losing to Brazil in
the final. Their trademark vim and
vigor alone should suffice in this
weak group.
Con: The team’s best striker,
Charlie Davies, is officially out of
the World Cup. Its best defender,
Oguchi Onyewu, is in a mad rush to
get healthy.
Key player: When Landon Donovan
is on his game, he’s still unquestion-
ably the best American player. The
28-year-old should be loaded with
confidence after a successful loan
spell at Everton.
4 ALGERIA
Pro: Algeria defeated archrival
Egypt 1-0 in a tense match played on
neutral turf in Sudan,
sending thousands of
fans back home into
the streets for wild
celebrations.
Con: Algeria lacks
any sort of depth, par-

to earn a point in the group. Home-
continent advantage doesn’t really
apply to this North African team.
Key player: French-born Nadir
Belhadj is a fun player to watch — a
tenacious left back who loves to
dribble and get forward.

Pro: Germany generally excels in
international tournament play. Its
squad will mix veteran talent such
as Miroslav Klose with ascending
stars such as Mesut Ozil, an attack-

the big stage.
Con: Coach Joachim Low will be
without his first-choice keeper,
Rene Adler, who suffered a rib injury
last week.
Key player: Michael Ballack con-
tinues to cut a regal figure in the
center of Germany’s midfield at age
33. He’s the captain, and the glue
that holds the team’s many talented
pieces together.
3 GHANA
Pro: A breakout team in 2006, the
Black Stars are now a mature squad
full of European-based
players who should
derive energy from
supportive, home-
continent crowds.
Con: Ghana’s best
player, Michael Essien,
Boateng has been hurt since
January and is racing
to get fit. But it’s not looking good.
Key player: FIFA this week ap-
proved a switch in nationality for
Kevin-Prince Boateng. The Berlin-
born midfielder previously played
on Germany’s U-21 team. His
brother, Jerome, plays for Germany.

Pro: Serbia has top-level talent
spread throughout Europe’s top
leagues. Manchester United’s Ne-
manja Vidic and Chelsea’s Branislav
Ivanovic create a formidable part-
nership in central defense.
Con: Serbia, like England, showed
its vulnerability when it failed to
qualify for Euro 2008. Its tough
match on June 13 against Ghana will
largely determine the team’s fate in
the group.
Key player: Zoran Tosic, a young
winger, has scored five goals in his
last six games for FC Cologne and
will try to stay hot through the
summer.
4 AUSTRALIA
Pro: Australia, like Ghana, made
a surprise run to the knockout
stages in 2006. With
entertaining players
such as Tim Cahill,
a midfielder with a
knack for scoring, the
Socceroos are easy to
root for.
Schwarzer Con: The Aussies,
one of the better bot-
tom seeds, had the bad luck to draw
into this group. It’s just too strong
for them to advance.
Key player: Mark Schwarzer — the
6-foot-4 goalkeeper who is ever-
green at age 37 — was awesome for
Fulham this season.
