1879 First engine


The first stationary gasoline engine developed by Carl Benz was a one-cylinder two-stroke
unit which ran for the first time on New Years Eve 1879. Benz had so much commercial
success with this engine that he was able to devote more time to his dream of creating a
lightweight car powered by a gasoline engine, in which the chassis and engine formed a
single unit.
2. 1908 Model T
Henry Ford's "Model T" car, introduced by Ford Motors, was a favorite of
consumers because of its low price and high quality. This is significant because the
Model-T was one of the most successful cars and it revolutionized the automobile industry.
3. 1914 First steel body car
Dodge Motor Company created the first all steel body car. This is significant because it
made it a travel a lot safer when it came to the percentage of car crashes and other
accident types.
4. 1934 Citroen avant
The French automobile Citron Traction Avant was the first car to be mass produced.
5. 1940 First jeep
In 1940, a time of war, the U.S army decided they needed a fast, all terrain vehicle. After
ordering numerous automobile companies to come up with designs and protoypes, Willy's
Truck created a perfect protype which was used. Man war veterans have noted that
without the jeep the U.S may not have been able to win World War II
6. 1937 First automatic transmission
The invention of the automatic transmission allowed for cars to accelerate and
deaccelerate without the need to switch gears manually. And was invented by oldsmobile
7. 1950 Cruise control
Ralph Teeter, a blind man, senses by ear that cars on the Pennsylvania Turnpike travel at
uneven speeds, which he believes leads to accidents. Through the 1940s he develops a
cruise control mechanism that a driver can set to hold the car at a steady speed.
Unpopular when generally introduced in the 1950s, cruise control is now standard on more
than 70 percent of todays automobiles.
8. 1966 Fuel injection
An electronic fuel injection system is developed in Britain. Fuel injection delivers carefully
controlled fuel and air to the cylinders to keep a cars engine running at its most efficient.

9. 1970 Fuel prices escalate, driving demand for fuel-efficient cars


Fuel prices escalate, driving a demand for fuel-efficient cars, which increases the sale of
small Japanese cars. This helps elevate the Japanese automobile industry to one of the
greatest in the world.
10. 1985 ABS
The Lincoln becomes the first American car to offer an antilock braking system (ABS),
which is made by Teves of Germany. ABS uses computerized sensing of wheel movement
and hydraulic pressure to each wheel to adjust pressure so that the wheels continue to
move
somewhat
rather
than
"locking
up"
during
emergency
braking.
11. Then and Now
From the creation, to the current version, the automobile has evolved to something many
may have never imagined. It it is now an average part of an average human's life.
