Strathmore town council proclaimed their support for the relief efforts and the evacuees of
Fort McMurray, where an unforgiving inferno
has claimed the homes of several thousand people and caused the evacuation of approximately
80,000 residents while continuing to spread to
neighbouring communities.
Although various Alberta communities, including Strathmore, have held fundraisers, collected donations, and even travelled north, the
devastating situation prompted council to direct
administration to bring back terms of reference
for a task force, on May 4, and emphasize the
continued need for monetary donations to the
Red Cross.
The current situation thats transpiring up in
Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo is somewhat
troublesome to me, said Councillor Brad Walls,
a former fireman who raised the issue in council
chambers at the regular council meeting.
Obviously the biggest thing that we can do for
these people right now is supply the Red Cross.
They really need funds up there. Being on the
front lines in Carseland a number of years ago,
you really gain the appreciation for what the men
and women in uniform are doing for these people at this time. Its a very serious situation.
Walls further acknowledged the breakneck
evacuation, the other hundreds of fires the province was forced to control, and the work provided by over 200 firefighters.
Other council members echoed the concerns
and suggested taking on an active role to indicate the towns support, not only for the residents of Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo, but
also those who call Strathmore home.
Many of those oilfield workers live here in
Strathmore and work up there, and I think its
going to affect them short-term and long-term
and I would like to give them some sort of support, said Councillor Steve Grajczyk.
I know back when Brooks had trouble with
their slaughter house with all their meat, we did
donate to the Red Cross there and I think because theres a lot of people that pay taxes here
in Strathmore, we should be doing the same
thing for the Red Cross out there.
Theres not only the short-term immediate
program here, theres the long-term of clean up
of everything else. This is a disaster that affects
everyone in the province on a long big scale.

Two RCMP officers were joined by two paramedics as the teamed up with

officers have taken some time to play basketball at one of the local schools
and they hope to encourage teens to become more active.

In a combined effort over the weekend, Strathmore and
Brooks were able to raise over $75,000 in cash donations
and deliver 55 pallets of supplies to the devastated area.
Strathmore residents have also housed several Fort McMurray families and gathered clothing and donations that were
then delivered up north.
Council voted in favour of directing administration to bring
back terms of reference for a task force to town council as

School Fuel is non-profit and so it relies on support from the government and from independent
donors. This year alone, School Fuel has received
generous donations from United Way, Cenovus,
Alberta Culture and Tourism, Cheadle Lions Club,
Strathmore Sobeys, Encana, Bell Tone, United
Church Women, Strathmore Childrens Festival, The
Donald and Linda Murray Foundation, and various
other independent donors who have contributed to
the annual cost of $18,000 dollars.
One way School Fuel has influenced me has
been in seeing how our community gets behind
programs that help improve the wellbeing of children, she said. People have stepped up to help
each year and as the need increases, so does the
number of people needed to be involved.
Recently, School Fuel has seen a major increase in
the amount of students who receive a daily breakfast, which is thought to be a result of the current
economic downturn which has plagued the province. There have been times when finances were
low and I brought it to God, she said. I know not
every project is meant to go on forever so when we
began to see gifts arrive one after another, I knew
we were supposed to continue on.
The churchs current focus is to go deeper and
wider within the community and their faith, but to
continue to serve, additional volunteers and donations are requested.
For children with food scarcity issues, its a tangible way to show them Gods love by being the
hands and feet of Jesus, concluded Goertz.

town because we have a lot of parents who sometimes struggle with finding things that their kids
can be involved in that are affordable, said Councillor Pat Fule, a board member since 2010.
Now, in 2016, the Strathmore Youth Club is serving more kids and youth than ever with statistics
showing that 48 percent are from rural areas and 52
percent are from urban areas. They now have their
own building and are able to provide transportation for participants with two buses. With these resources and growing number of staff, the club is
able to offer programs such as Junior Chef classes;
field trips to malls, theatres, and sports games; life
skill sessions; free and subsidized lunches; leadership training; and summer camps. The hope is that
the Strathmore Youth Club will be able to enrich
the lives of the children and youth it serves while
ensuring that entertainment and counselling are
within reach and very affordable.
Councillor Fule concluded, its a really necessary
program and it helps kids and it helps youth and it
helps families and the stronger those things can be,
the better the town is in the long run.
Please view the Strathmore Youth Club website
for information on enrollment, programs, and how
to make a donation.

Celebrated for its strong
choral tradition and past
success, Brentwood Elementary School commemorated the end of another
triumphant year when all
three choirs received esteemed recognition within
48 hours.
After the Brentwood Senior Choir placed second
for a second consecutive
year with a superior mark
of 91 at provincials, Brentwood music teacher Carolyn Steeves was still on the
bus with her students when
she received an e-mail informing her of the primary
choirs win made up of
Grade 1 students at the
Calgary Performing Arts
Festival where they performed two weeks prior.
Only hours later, the elementary school became
aware that the junior choir
Grade 2 and Grade 3
had also placed second,
competing against nine
choirs and receiving a rating of distinction and a
mark of 88.
This festival year has
been remarkable, because
never ever since Ive been
at this school did all three
choirs win something within 24 hours of each other,
said Steeves. Its an external verification for what
theyre doing and I think
thats important to recog-

A number of athletes from high schools
in Wheatland County competed for a
chance to show off their skills at the
counties track and field event on May

Some of the events included shot-put,
javelin, high jump, long jump and running.

Strathmore local Jaimie Betterton, 18, has moved up in the
lacrosse world and is now playing for the Rockyview Silvertip Junior girls team. Betterton started playing for the Silvertips this year, the teams inaugural year, and has already
proven to be a valuable team member.
It has been great to have the opportunity that I have to
coach her again, said Lesley Hawke, the vice president of
womens field lacrosse who had previously coached Betterton.
She is such a talented athlete and it really doesnt matter
what she does she puts in 110 per cent and you can always
see the improvement with what she does because she works
really hard.
Hawke explained that Bettertons biggest assets were her
speed and drive, which meant she is always engaged when
she is on the floor. Due to such speed, her coaches usually
use the offensive player for power plays and transitions because even when she gets checked she usually comes away
with the ball still in her possession.
My adrenaline goes up very high and thats one of the
things that I like about it the most, said Betterton.
That is one of the things that people dont know, how
hard it is to actually play and be focused. So my favourite
part about when I play [is] just how excited I get and how my
adrenaline goes up so high.
She started playing lacrosse five years ago with the Venom
midget girls and in her second year made it onto Team Alberta. However, she was unable to go to nationals due to a
concussion. She later moved on to playing for the Junior A
Cardinals ladies team, and eventually ended up in Airdrie
playing for the new junior team, which takes in girls from
the surrounding areas, including Strathmore, that dont have
a junior girls team.
Head coach Pat Brown referred to Betterton as a tough and
talented player.
Betterton is not the only girl from Strathmore who plays
for the team. Raegan Burkholder is one of the teams defense
players who Brown said made great strides since joining the
team.
Shes a totally reliable defender out there now, said
Brown.
Im really happy with the way she has come along and
improved herself and she has done wonders.
He further explained that both players are a valuable part
of the team and have made a huge difference in the success
of the team.

The Strathmore Spartans
rugby girls team carried forward the momentum of their
Springbank 7s Tournament
win, when they claimed a
significant victory over Bow
Valley High School last week
that paved the way to zones
and requires only one win to
compete at provincials.
The
Strathmore

off their strong backs positions and managed to slow
down several skilled players
on the opposing team on May
12, leading to a 43-5 win.
They played really well today and we worked out a lot
of defensive stuff and we can
start to see it implemented,
said Jerry Flaws, Spartan rugby girls coach.
We still have to keep working on that and we have to

ANDREA ROBERTS

Strathmore has produced many good
athletes over the years and Reid Jensen
is no exception.
The 14-year-old Holy Cross Collegiate
student previously played for the Strathmore Badgers football team. Despite
only playing for a few years his talent
has already begun to shine.
This is my third year playing football,
said Jensen. When I started I found out
that I was good at football and this is the
first year I have left Strathmore.
Jensen joined up for the Airdrie Raiders football winter camp, which takes
players in Grades 9-11 and teaches
them to further their skills. Jensen who
described himself as a pretty diverse
player acted as quarterback and wide
receiver while he has been playing wide
receiver and safety in Airdrie. He has
seen improvement in his game and Airdries Coach Steve Kemp attested to this.
He instantly stood out among the
Grade 9s and we liked what we saw,
said Kemp.
As the camp went on he started out
