UNDERCARRIAGE / TRACK SYSTEMS

Caterpillar offers you many options of both fully assembled track systems and individual
undercarriage components. We match our undercarriage to your machine's application,
saving original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) development time and cost, and
increasing the value of your machine. Choosing the right undercarriage depends on many
factors - the amount of travel time, underfoot conditions, desired life, and
maneuverability requirements. We offer several size options of undercarriage for use in
each of these situations.

Track Systems

Are your best choice and available in several lengths and widths of track. Not only do
you get proven quality and integrated design, but you also gain the economic advantage
of purchasing a system already assembled. Assembled track arrangements include:

• Two track roller frames

• Track and track shoes
• Track Rollers and carrier rollers
• Idlers/Track Adjuster/Recoil
• Mechanism/Sprockets
• Final drive
• Parking brake

Complete track systems are also available with optional car bodies and hydraulic lines
from the swivel to track motors, a swing bearing and gear group, and hydraulic swivel.

Custom Designs

Caterpillar systems can be adapted meet specific application requirements. Plus, you can
count on Caterpillar to support you throughout the entire process. There are a wide range
of custom components, including:
 Optional final drives and motors that meet the demands of various pump flows and
system pressures.
 Variable gauge car bodies.
 Quick disconnects for towing.
 Oscillating track roller frames.
 Track roller frames with side mounts.

Individual Moving Undercarriage Components

Caterpillar undercarriage is engineered as a system, with attention to critical factors such

as steel quality, surface hardness, hardened depth, and precise dimensional tolerances.
The result isn't just a collection of components, but a system that balances wear life
between components. That means there are no "weak links" that will wear out early or
need constant attention. It also means an OEM's customers can plan undercarriage service
and maintenance well in advance to reduce the impact on their operations.

Sealed Track

• Belleville-type washers between the bushing end and link counterbore keep
abrasives out to extend pin and bushing life by 20-30% over unsealed track.
• Heavily-strutted links assure uniform loading , minimize stress concentration and
distribute wear evenly.
• Deep rail hardened for long life.
• Cold-extruded bushings with tempered ends handle shock and stress.
• Induction hardened pins provide a wear resistant surface over a tough core.
• The smooth pin finish minimizes friction on the bushing.
• Pin and bushing hardness is compatible to equalize wear.

Specification Data Sheet

Sealed and Lubricated Track

Internal lubrication systems:

• Eliminate internal pin and bushing wear.

• Produces less noise.
• Makes more efficient use of horsepower.
• Provides 50% longer bushing life for lower costs.

Track Shoes

Available in several styles and a range of widths.

Standard single grouser moderate service shoes provide good penetration and traction.
Extreme service single grouser shoes provide up to 50% longer wear life in high impact
and abrasive conditions.

Double grouser shoes offer less turning resistance for greater maneuverability.
Triple grouser shoes offer the lowest penetration and turning resistance, and the best
maneuverability.
In addition, special-use shoes such as flat, self-cleaning and rubber/polyurethane bonded
are available.
Shoes are rolled from modified medium carbon steel and deep hardened for long wear
life. They have heavy cross sections with curved leading and trailing edges to resist
bending. For more information, check out our downloadable Track Shoes Specification
Data Sheet.

Track Rollers

Available in single and double flange, and in both excavator and track-type tractor styles.
Sealed and lifetime lubricated. Wide flanges resist rollover. High-strength steel and deep
hardening virtually eliminate wear, shock loads, and bell mouthing. Sleeve bearings and
large hardened shafts absorb impacts and deflection.

Tractor-style rollers have an upset center shaft to absorb heavy thrust loading and offer at
least 30% more wear life than excavator-style rollers. Best for machines that spend a lot
of time traveling at high speeds.

Excavator-style rollers are better in high-impact conditions because of its heavy-duty,

large diameter shaft.

Idlers

Cast or fabricated with internal reinforcing plates for superior strength and durability, and
are sealed and lifetime lubricated.

Sprockets

One-piece cast assemblies or sprocket segments have an odd-numbered hunting tooth

design to evenly distribute workloads and wear. Sprocket teeth are hardness matched
with bushings for optimum wear life.
Track Adjusting and Recoil Mechanism Heavy-duty recoil springs reduce shock loads.
Hydraulic track adjusters can be set with a grease gun, so no special service tools or high-
pressure gas-charging cylinders are required. Users spend more time working and less
time adjusting.

Track Shoe Hardware Self-locking track nuts and bolts match shoe strength, exceeding
SAE Grade 8 standards. Rolled threads resist stripping and cross threading. Controlled
stretch allows uniform tightening procedure.

Rubber Track Undercarriage

The ASV patent-pending rubber undercarriage with its'

multiple levels of suspension and planetary gear final
drive is now available for OEMs. The track is a
proprietary molded rubber compound around high-tensile
strength cords. Grousers are molded into the track for
added traction in snow and other soft underfoot
conditions. The undercarriage spreads machine weight
over a wide ground surface area to provide high floatation,
optimum traction and smooth operation. It's ideal for
applications where relatively fast machine speeds excellent rimpull and low ground
pressure are desired.

Mini Excavator Undercarriage

• Steel or rubber track

• Maximum mobility
• Low ground pressure reduces soil compaction
• High durability frame and car body
• Frame design reduces materials packing in tracks
• Adjustable track tension

Undercarriage Overview
The undercarriage can constitute the single biggest cost on a machine. For over a century,
Caterpillar's leadership in undercarriage research has resulted in greater machine
productivity and undercarriage value.
Undercarriage Terminology
Caterpillar undercarriage components work as a powerful system to
propel your machine over all types of terrain.

Links
Special heat treat processes give Cat links consistent surface hardness,
superior hardening depth, and strong core hardness. This results in excellent
wear resistence, strength, and durability for unmatched sealability and long life.

Rollers
Cat rollers are through hardened for long wear life, unmatched structural
support, and resistance to deformation. Cat's Duo-Cone seals help ensure
lifetime lubrication to extend life, permit roller reshelling, and lower your
costs.

Segments
High surface hardness and excellent hardened depth and core hardness
mean Cat segments provide long wear life, resistance to bending and
breakage, and maximum hardware retention. The bolt-on design reduces
replacement time.

Pins & Bushings

Cat pins and bushings are dimensionally matched to the links and
manufactured to provide excellent track joint integrity. This design helps ensure
maximum sealability. High surface and core hardness translate into increased
strength and wear resistence.

Seals
To keep abrasives out and oil in, the Caterpillar rigid seal design combines high
wear reistance and load protection. The result is a "wet" joint at turn time, which
extends bushing life and lowers your cost.
Idlers
Special heat treat processes help ensure proper hardness levels, providing
wear resistance. Duo-Cone seals help ensure lifetime lubrication.
eliminating idler maintenance and lowering operating costs.

Track Shoes
Caterpillar track shoes are furnace hardened and tempered for strength and
resistance to bending and breakage. We offer a variety of track shoe options to
meet the requirements of your work environment.

Every machine owner strives to make the undercarriage last as long as possible.

It's about economy - but take it too far and it will have the opposite effect. An
undercarriage in poor condition reduces the machine's safety and stability, increases fuel
consumption when tracking, shortens machine life and increases the risk of unplanned
downtime. That is why it is important to replace undercarriage parts in good time. It is
necessary to regard the undercarriage as a complete unit, e.g., a new chain can be worn
out quickly by a worn sprocket or by incorrect set-up of an undercarriage.

That is why you should let your Volvo dealer perform an inspection of the undercarriage
parts at regular intervals, to plan maintenance and to ensure best total economy and
operating reliability. With genuine Volvo undercarriage parts you get consistently high
quality at the right price.
