Unique to Malaysia is the open house concept where during the various cultural and
religious festivals, friends, families and even strangers would visit the homes of those who
are celebrating the festivals. The guests would wish them well and enjoy the feast and
traditional festive delicacies prepared by their hosts.
Open house invitations to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Deepavali
and Christmas are excellent opportunities for Malaysians of different races to get to know
each other better and rejoice in their cultural diversity. By improving knowledge and
understanding on the various culture and traditions, Malaysians would be cooperative and
live harmoniously. Besides, neighbours could be of great help in times of trouble and doing
things together enhances understanding and networking among the various races in the spirit
of 1 Malaysia.
Many people take advantage of the holidays to go out with their families and friends to
many open houses around towns during these festivals. Some thoughtful hosts would even
offer transport for the disabled to attend their open houses. They make it a point to reserve
disabled parking lots for handicapped drivers. They also go to meet the disabled at their cars
and help them in their wheelchairs.

Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.

Rice is a cereal grain grown mainly in Asia and other parts of the world. It is the staple food
of a large percentage of the human race especially in Asia. It is the third largest produced
agriculture commodity in the world after maize and sugarcane.
Rice is the most important grain which provides calories for nearly one fifth of the
entire human population in the world.
It is believed to have originated about nearly thirteen thousand years ago in the Pearl
River Valley region of China. It then spread to other parts of Asia and South East Asia. Rice
was introduced to Europe through Western Asia.
There are many varieties of rice today. It was originally grown as an annual plant but
today rice is cultivated three times a year in certain countries. The original method of rice
cultivation has now been replaced with modern methods using machinery in most countries
to ensure higher yield.
