A) Who was Hugo Munsterberg?

Hugo Munsterberg was a German American psychologist. He was one of the pioneers of applied
psychology, extending his research and theories to industrial/organizational, legal, medical,
clinical, educational and business settings. Munsterberg believes that it was important to use
psychological test in the employment process. He also recognizes a relationship between
scientific management theory and industrial psychology. Many of Munsterbergs ideas especially
the idea of matching an individuals personality with correct job set and skills are common in the
use of industrial/organizational psychology today.
B) Identify his area of specialty, in relation to management
Industrial/organizational psychology was Munsterberg area of specialty in relation to
management where he studied human behavior in the workplace and applies psychological
theories and principles to organizations, such as employee attitudes and how it can be improved
through hiring practices, training progress, feedback and management system.
C) Why did he think it was important to use psychological test in the employment
process?
According to (study.com sept.10.2015) Munsterberg thought it was important to use
psychological test in the employment process for the organizations to know their employees
skills, abilities, work attitude and which department would be best for that individual to work.
Few examples of psychological test are:
Intelligent test- is used to measure intelligence or your ability to understand your
environment interacts with it and learn from it.

Personality test- is used to measure personality style and traits. Personality test are
commonly used in research or to do assist with clinical diagnoses.
Attitude test-is used to measure how an individual feels about a particular event, place,
person or object.
Achievement test- is used to measure how well you understand a particular topic and
Aptitude test is used to measure your abilities in a specific area.
Neuropsychological test- is used to elect impairments in your cognitive functioning that
are taught to be a result of brain damage.
The purpose to psychological testing is to have more informed hiring decision, to determine in
particular the ability of potential employees to work under stressful conditions and to assess the
potential of a prospective employee to handle the job effectively under those conditions. Using
these tests will help the organizations to be more efficient and effective.
D) Explain why he thought that there was a link between scientific management and
industrial psychology
According to (boundless.com sept.18.2015) scientific management focuses on facts and laws that
are essential to improve efficiency and output through scientific studies of workers processes. A
Knowledge of scientific management can give you a better understanding of industrial
psychology.
According to (reference for business.comsept.18.2015) industrial psychology is the application
or extension of psychological methods or principles to the solution of organizational and
workplace problems.

The link between them is that both or methods to improve efficiency in an organization.
However scientific management might have to deal with the physical part, things that needs to be
done to improve efficiency while industrial psychology would deal with the mental part.
