Question 8.
Mr Bull instructs Adrian (with Linforth supervising) to begin an experiment by dropping a stone from a tall
building. At the same time as the stone is dropped, Adrian strikes an electronic switch to launch a small
rocket from below ground level with the top of the rocket at ground level. The rocket is launched with an
initial velocity of 4 g m / s , where g is the gravitational constant.
(a) Find the exact expression for the speed of each object in terms of time, t and the
gravitational constant g for the

(ii) rocket

(iii) The stone and the rocket pass by each other, travelling with the same speed but in
opposite directions. Find the time, t for this to happen after the start of the experiment.

(iv) Hence, show that height of the building is 8g metres.

(b) (i) Find the exact time that it takes for the stone to hit the ground.

(ii) Hence find the difference in time between the stone hitting the ground and the rocket rising and hitting
the ground.
