About Chikmagalur
Chikmagalur is a small town situated in the Chikamagaluru district of the state of Karnataka.
The city is located in the south-western part of Karnataka on the foothills of the Mullayanagiri
range . The name Chikmagalur means younger daughter's town in Kannada. It is 250 km from
Bangalore, the state capital and is a popular weekend getaway.

History of Chikmagalur
Earlier, Chikmagalur was called by the name of Kadur district till 1947. Later it was given the
name of Chikmagalur, because of its history. It is believed that it was given as dowry to the
younger daughter of Rukmangada, who was the chief of Sakrepatna and the other part was
given to the elder daughter, which is known as Hiremagalur.
Chiklamaglur is famous for its tea and coffee plantations. In fact, it is the place where coffee
was cultivated for the first time in India. It was Babu Budan, a Muslim saint who brought coffee
seeds from Yemen in 1670. Today a mountain range to the north of the town is named after
him. Later, when the Europeans came to India, they took over the plantations and trade of
coffee and tea.

Featured review about Chikmagalur

Touching the sky: A weekend at Chikmagalur- land of coffee
Page 3/15

"It was 26th Jan long weekend of Jan 2015. I started researching to locate a decent
accommodation in Chikmagalur and fortunately I bumped into SK Regency. I searched about
this hotel and it was good review by the people who wants to get a budget hotel near by the all
places. Initially planned for the weekend of Dec-2014 but had to postpone the dates as it was
already booked. Then, checked for weekend of Jan- 26 2015 was lucky this time for which I got
the booking confirmed.
Accommodation: SK Regency
Rate: 1. 4K per Room per night inclusive of all (No Breakfast and no meal).
Onward Journey: (NH 48) BLR -> Nelamangala -> Channarayapatna -> Halebid ->
Chikmagalur
Started at 6:30 AM from home (Outer ring road) and took NH4 which was a breezy drive all the
way to Nelamangala. From Nelamangala we had to take a left towards Hassan and this route
also was very good all the way to Hassan. Stopped for breakfast at on the way hotel for
breakfast around 8AM. We had hot tatte idly with and coffee. We took halebid diversion to see
all historic temples on the way and reached Chikmagalur around 1:30PM. With no time i
checked in into hotel and upon asking he gave me one route of all sight and distance. Hotel
staff was average in communication but they will manage the show.
Places Must visit:
Please check out the map attached. Its very much self descriptive and you need not ask
anyone.
But we reached around 2:00PM so we don't want to go to Mullayanagiri as morning visit to this
place will be good. So covered buttermilk falls, kavikal gandhi and returned back to hotel by
7PM.
Mullayanagiri -go early morning (be careful while driving)
Kavikal Gandhi- Climbing 50 steps behind check posts take to horseshow view of
chandradrona hills, enjoy scenic beauty of inner and outer Giri
ButterMilk Falls- Nice place, no car will go down after reaching near by, if you can walk 2. 5 KM
in dust or mud you can go and another option is JEEP by local people. Be careful, who have
back or spin, slip disc issues avoid jeep as its like coaster ride.
Hebe falls- You can go, avoid personal vehicle there but rent the JEEP and go so nothing to
worry about and again careful with bumpy journey.
There are many small falls and points where you can stop and enjoy.
Page 4/15

I'll suggest spend the time where you like and don't spoil your journey by visiting so many
places.
Food: As north guy, i found the restaurant "Kanha" combined with Giri Inn hotel. Fantastic food
by them encourage us to go there twice in day. You can have south Indian food in town all
hotels are good but avoid any resto bar and specially prefer restaurant near by KSRTC bus
stops. If you are a coffee drinker than ask any local person and they will guide you to get the
best coffee in town.
Advice: Prefer south indian food, avoid resto bars, book hotel well in advance as weekend
everything full, spend time where you like, drive carefully, visit Mullayanagiri in early morning 7
and stay there for 10AM.
Always have something before going some where as, all places are situated on remote location
and no proper food will be available. If you have children with you so prepared yourself for warm
clothes and baby food.
Don't be so enthusiastic for photo and risk your life in hills and sharp curves. Keep place clean
by not throwing your trash at all places, avoid throwing plastics bags & bottles." - Kuldip
Patel, Rajkot, Jan 28, 2015

Over the clouds

"It was just another instantly planned trip where destination was still 'x'. After constant browsing
for destinations 4-6 hours from Bangalore, we concluded to hit Chikmagalur. Although there
were advises not to travel to the place in this season where it rains a lot. But... believe me it was
nothing less of real beauty, might be that in better seasons, this place seems more heavenly..
There are a lot of waterfalls and hills to be explored.
Internet suggests a lot of activities but since we had been there during the off season, we did
not find much adventure activity. Also the short duration did not allow much bandwidth to
explore of adventure sports.
Note: Any description of the place would be an under-statement.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food: Did not hunt much for the food and settled down with
whatever was available. Carry lot of snacks(useful during the treks and journey) but please
bring back the waste and dispose it carefully.
Due to short schedule(1.5 day) we covered Kemmengudi, Mullayyanagiri, Bababudan hills.
Hebbe falls and Jhari falls. We were not able to do real treks owing to the rains and a couple of
travelmates who were too sick of the leeches(always try to pick a group of enthusiasts for the
place) but the hill ride was worth doing it million times.
Do not miss the temple at top of 'sheetalagiri', it has stairs which at time would seem to be
Page 5/15

staircase to heaven. This was the place where I felt the over the top of cloud feeling, when
towards the top it was not raining and dark clouds could be seen from the top. And as you
descended, you could explore that you were above a raining cloud. It was just heavenly and
awesome experience. Winds were blowing at amazingly great velocity and made you feel 'if I
had wings'.
Shopping: Not a place where you want to waste time in shopping.
Activities & things to do: Internet suggests a lot of activities but since we had been there during
the off season, we did not find much adventure activity. Also the short duration did not allow
much bandwidth to explore of adventure sports.
Just roam around and spend minimal time in your hotel rooms.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Reach to Chikmagalur by early morning 4-5AM;
get freshened up and hit the road again by 6-7AM although it wont matter much as we had
complete cloud cover until 11AM.
Carry extra pair of footwear as your shoes are proned to get wet in the falls. Have shoes to
protect your legs from leeches. Carry salt for the same reason during trek.
Trekking in rainy season might be tricky so try to avoid it during the month of September.
Since we had hired a cab, cannot advise much on public transport to the place." - Sid Jain,
Bangalore, Sep 17, 2011

In harmony with nature

"Chikmagalur is a scenic destination that takes you into the lap of nature. Soothing green,
coffee plantations, pepper and a variety of fruit and flowers all add to the feeling of calm and
relaxation that you get when you land here. The roads are good in most places and winding
ghats at some.
It rains for most part of the year and that can sometimes make commute difficult.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Kemmangudi, Hebbe Falls(albeit far), Sithalayangiri,
Mulayanagiri, Kalahasti falls are places to visit from Chikmagalur. MG Park with its Toy train and
games are also an attraction for children and adults alike. Coffee and pepper, green cardamom
would be things to shop for.
Activities & things to do: Relax and let Nature reach out to you!
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Bangalore-Neelamangala-Kunigal-Hasan-BelurChikmagalur.
The roads are generally good. There are however areas where construction is still on and we
need to take bypasses. Those roads offer bumpy rides. Still overall, can make good time." Sandeep Kaliyath, Udhagamandalam, May 31, 2011

Tranquility
Page 6/15

"If you want to go to a place where it is not swarming, easy on the pocket and if youre a nature
freak, Chikmagalur is a good option. The place is really green. As long as you are not living in
the town, you will really love this place. This place is quite eminent for its tea and coffee estates.
A very good place to go unwind and loosen up. You can go with family, spouse or with friends.
Its a place where it really doesnt matter who you go with. All that matters is it takes us from a
very fast and chaotic day to day life that we face every day in the city. The locals are particularly
responsive. If you are the kind of person looking for a serene vacation, Chikmagalur is a really
good alternative to many other pricey and commercial places we find in South India.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food is Good. You should try Akki roti and Koli Saaru if you
are a non vegetarian. I unfortunately cannot remember the name of the restaurant I tries this at.
Man did I fall in love with it or what!! Awesome. The thought of it gets my taste buds running all
over the place.
You could visit the Baba Budan Range, Mullayangiri, Belavadi, Marle. You could also do day
trips to Sringeri as well as Kemmanagundi.
There is nothing much to shop here. So dont bother looking for places to shop. You can buy
something as a souvenir but nothing much to shop here.
Activities & things to do: Again all you can really do here is just relax. Visit some of the places
mentioned above. Apart from that, if the resort you are staying at offers some kind of activities,
you could keep yourself busy with that.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: From Bangalore, you could use your own
transport or take a bus. It takes only about 8 hours. If you are going to use your own transport,
the
best
route
would
be
Bangalore>Nelamangala>Kunigal>Chennarayapatna>Hassan>Belur>Chikmagalur. Apart from
that, there is nothing really to worry about here. Just go there and relax." - Savio Thomas,
Bangalore, Mar 24, 2011

Kemmanagundi, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary...........

"Kemmanagundi is the ideal place to get away from the heat & dust, the crowds & traffic jams of
the cities. Quite peaceful serene, nesting amidst lush green forests. Kemmanagundi is sure to
revive & rejuvenate you, physically, mentally & spiritually.
The sanctuary takes its name from the eponymous river, its lifeline. Popularly known as Muthodi
Wildlife Sanctuary, after the village on its periphery. Moist and dry deciduous forests with
patches of shoal-grassland habitat are found at the higher altitudes.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: No specialty food is available here. Canteens run by the
Dept. or some small time restaurants can see to that you don't starve.
Activities & things to do: Trekking to Hebbe Falls 8 Kms - water gushes down from a height of
168 mtrs in two stages. Kalhatti Falls 10 Kms - Water cascades down from a height of 122 mtrs.
Page 7/15

There is also a local temple here, constructed in a gap between rocks.

In Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary we can see elephant, panther spotted dear wild dog, sloth bear,
hornbill, bulbul etc.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Kemmanagundi: 290 Kms. from Bangalore and
35 kms from Tarikere, Chikmangalore dist..
Bhadra wild life: 257 Kms. from Bangalore" - Harsha Kumar, Bangalore, Mar 2, 2007
