against side loads and a relatively small

How Loadcells Work
Your Weighing System Is Only As Reliable As The Load Cell, Which Is The Heart Of Any
Weighbridge. The load cells are highly accurate transducers, designed to sense force or weight
under a wide range of adverse conditions. Theyre the most essential part of an electronic
weighing system, but also the most vulnerable.
The sensing or spring element is designed in such a way it develops a strain, directly proportional
to the load applied. The strain gages, are usually connected in a multiple of four, called a
Wheatstone bridge configuration. This converts the very small change in resistance into a usable
electrical signal. Load cells may be damaged because of (shock) overloading, lightning strikes or
heavy surges in current, chemical or moisture ingress, mis-handling (dropping, lifting on cable,
etc.), vibration, seismic events or internal component malfunctioning. The load cell needs to be
properly sealed against the environment.

Our
Hermetically sealed, load cells are made from 17-4PH steel - which offers the best
performance qualities of any alloy. Hermetically sealed, load cells are more expensive than
other load cells due to the additional costs of sealing the load cell

Hermetic
sealing will ensure the integrity of your strain gauge section of the cell in corrosive
or wash down applications. A true hermetically sealed load cell incorporates a welded header
cover over the gauge cavity where the cable is attached. The welded header is the key to
preventing moisture enetrating the inner load cell

If
you choose to use a non-hermetic cell to save some dollars, in a washdown application, and
you have to keep changing the loadcell due to failure from moisture,then the cost is much
greater than using a hermetically sealed load cell in the first place.
A load cell is a force sensor which receives a voltage (excitation) from a regulated power source
(usually a digital indicator or signal conditioner) and sends back a low voltage signal (signal)
when force is applied. The load cell signal is converted to a visual or numeric value by a digital
indicator. When there is no load on the cell the two signal lines are at equal voltage. As a load
is applied to the cell, the voltage on one signal line increases very slightly and the voltage on the
other signal line decreases very slightly. The difference in voltage between the two signals is read
by the indicator in mV.
The load cell core is usually made of good quality steel or aluminium. The circuit consists of
precision foil resistors called strain gauges connected in a configuration called a Wheatstone
bridge. The gauges are bonded very securely to the metal where they sense very small deflections
in the metal caused by the load being applied to the cell. Because the signal levels are very small,
the circuit must be protected from all outside influences such as moisture, physical damage or
electrical interference.
