Render is a software tool that guides oral

communicators in creating culturally relevant oral
materials for their own language group. It was
developed and designed with the oral communicator
in mind, guiding the user through an entirely oral
translation process by listening and speaking.
Render facilitates the various components of Bible
translation, including drafting, peer review, revision,
community testing, back translation, and consultant
checking, and also serves as an audio workflow
management system. However, the goal is to
develop a software useful to users with various levels
of formal education, literacy skills, and technological
savvy.
The software supports the loading of audio
recordings of Scripture to serve as sources for
translation. A translator or translation team can listen
to the source in one or more (up to four) languages,
translate orally into the target language, and record
the new translation.

Glyssen
Glyssen makes it easy to produce a
high-quality dramatized audio recording
of Scripture. It takes the drudgery out of
the process by helping to identify all the
direct speech in the text and quickly
identifying the biblical character who
speaks each part.
A joint project between Faith Comes by
Hearing and SIL International, Glyssen
is a tool for parsing Scripture passages
and assigning characters who speak
each section. It allows a native speaker
to disambiguate blocks of text which
may be spoken by more than one
character.

masses, in a positive environment that focuses participants on
the task and works wherever they are. On the tablet, phone or

The Bloom app is a simple, template driven approach to

creating books in local languages without the complexity
associated with desktop publishing. It is as easy as adding
text and picture to a PowerPoint slide. The platform allows
for easy translation of content into other languages provided
the organization can use the existing templates or create
their own custom templates for the master copy.
Bloom is now in version 3 and has already been named a
finalist in the All Children Reading competition. Bloom
enables the creation of reading content with images without
tangling the creator in page layout and formatting. People
can author simple books, or use the Bloom interface and a
growing online library to translate available shell books into
local languages. Some of the latest improvements to Bloom
allow the creation of leveled readers and decodable readers.
Now Bloom has added more font size and spacing control, a
much requested feature.

We Say helps non-linguists build a dictionary

in their own language. It has various ways to
help native speakers to think of words in their
language and enter some basic data about
them (no backslash codes, just forms to fill
in). The program is customizable and taskoriented, giving the advisor the ability to turn
on/off tasks as needed and as the user
receives training for those tasks. WeSay
uses a standard xml format, so data can be
exchanged with linguist-oriented tools like
FieldWorks. Users can collaborate via USB
flash drive, email, and (soon) via network
connections.
