I am applying for the job of management consultant in strategy consulting. I am in

the process of completing my PhD in department of Medical Biophysics at the
University of Toronto. My thesis is on the technical development of in vivo magnetic
resonance spectroscopy and I hope to complete my degree in October 2016. I am
interested in the position of strategy consultant because it offers me the
opportunity to apply my keen problem solving skills to real world problems that
have a significant impact on the world we live in.
I believe I would be an excellent consultant due to my problem solving ability
and my ability to work effectively both independently and within groups. These
qualities are demonstrated from both my academic history as well as my personal
life. My PhD has involved both independent work within a laboratory developing
new magnetic resonance techniques, as well as collaborating with a team of
scientists, radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons and technicians to successfully
implement my techniques in a clinical setting. The fundamental question my
projected aimed at tackling was: how can we shorten clinical scans, to improve
increase throughput and patient comfort, and how can we access new, potentially
important, information previously inaccessible? Throughout my degree I successfully
ran two clinical trials, where I was directly involved in every step from lab bench to
patient recruitment to implementation. I also believe that my strong quantitative
background in physics will make me excellent in the data-driven world of consulting.
This is exemplified by my stellar academic record, particularly in mathematics and
physics classes, as well as my strong quantitative reasoning score on the graduate
record exam. Within my institute I have been the coordinator for the magnetic
resonance research group, which hosts more than 40 world-class researchers, for
the last year and a half. I organize monthly meetings between the different research
groups in order to improve scientific collaboration as well as education. I have
developed the reputation as an approachable problem solver within my department,
as several of the more junior students approach me in solving difficult problems.
Outside of the classroom I run a fitness club through the athletics centre
within the university. I help people interested in fitness who are often intimidated by
starting. I have grown the club to over 15 members throughout the last year, with
some of the members going on to compete in competitions.

The reason why I am interested in Bain & Company is because they are a
company which understands the nuances of earning a PhD, and that the
fundamental quality learned from a PhD is the ability to approach previously
unsolved problems and solve them in a way to obtain meaningful results. I believe
that working for Bain & Company will give me the opportunity to continue to pursue
my passion of learning, while solving real world important and impactful problems.
