rural community. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the percentage of all
medical students who plan to work in a rural community.

QUESTION 3
a. You wish to estimate the mean weight of machine components of a certain type
and you require a 92% degree of confidence that the sample mean will be in error
by no more than 0.008g. A pilot study showed that the population standard
deviation is estimated to be 0.09g. Find the sample size required.

b. A manufacturer of wire notes that, on average, there are 4 flaws per 10 rods of
wire. Each day one rod of wire is inspected for flaws. If more than one flaw is
found in this rod, the plant shuts down for repairs. Suppose, nothing at all is
wrong with the machinery on a certain day.
i. What probability distribution is most suitable in this case?

(1 mark)

ii. What is the probability that the plant will be closed for repairs after an
inspection on this day?

c. Douglas wants to compare the yield of income and growth mutual funds. Fifty
thousand dollars is invested in each of a sample of 35 income and 40 growth
funds. The mean increase for a two-year period for the income funds is $900. For
the growth funds, the mean increase is $875. Income funds have a sample
standard deviation of $35; growth funds have a sample standard deviation of $45.
i. What assumption, regarding population standard deviation, do you need to
make before hypothesis testing? State the assumption and justify it.
(2 marks)
ii. At the 0.05 significance level, is there a difference in the mean yields of the
two funds? Make sure to show the steps of hypothesis testing.

QUESTION 4
a. The average outstanding credit card balance for young couples in Country Z is
normally distributed with mean $650 and standard deviation of $420.
i. What is the probability that a couple chosen at random has a credit card
balance exceeding $700?
(3 marks)
ii. What is the probability that a random sample of 100 young couples have a
mean credit card balance exceeding $700?
(3 marks)
iii. What is the probability that a random sample of 200 young couples have a
credit card balance totaling less than $125,000?
(3 marks)
iv. The probability that 50 randomly chosen young couples have an average credit
card balance greater than a certain average is 0.29. What is the average
amount?
(4 marks)
v. The probability that 100 randomly chosen young couples have a total credit
card balance less than a certain total is 0.42. What is the total amount?

-test, pooled -test and dependent sample -test. Write down one characteristic or
condition to recognize each type of test.

(3 marks)
ii. What is the probability that the total wait time for 50 people is less than 1080
minutes?

employee would rate his or her immediate supervisor and in turn the supervisor
would rate each employee. To find reactions regarding the proposal, 150 office
personnel and 200 plant personnel were selected at random. Ninety-eight of the
office personnel and 113 of the plant personnel were in favor of the proposal.
