Open PhD Student / Doctoral Researcher Position:

Graphene-based Terahertz electronics and photonics for sensing
The Nanophotonics and Terahertz Technology group is part of the Chair of
Photonics and has close cooperation with the High Frequency Electronics group.
Recently, our research is interested to use nano- photonic materials and technology
in the field of terahertz generation, detection and systems. Our research level starts
from device design, fabrication, characterization, optimization, and ends with system
integration.

Research Area. We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified PhD candidate
who explores graphene-based or graphene-enhanced devices for sensing
applications. This includes functionalized graphene layers as an exposed twodimensional electron gas for highly sensitive and specific sensors and THz sources
based on photonic mixers with graphene electrodes, and electronic oscillator
concepts realized in graphene that can be combined with classical electronic Dr.-Ing. Shihab Al-Daffaie
approaches. The PhD program is part of the European International Training
Merckstrae 25
Network (ITN) CELTA: Convergence of Electronics and Photonics Technologies 64283 Darmstadt
for Enabling Terahertz Applications. The consortium, consisting of 11 prestigious
Universities within Europe, aims for bringing the electronic and optical Phone: +49 6151 16 28483
communities closer together. In the framework of the thesis, the PhD candidate will Fax: +49 6151 16 28431

get closely in contact with the other consortium groups, including an extended
research stay at two partner institutes.
Expected Qualifications. The candidate should hold Diploma or Master Degree in
Electronic Engineering or Physics, be able to write and present scientific results in
English, and bring well-founded knowledge and experience in one or more of the
following areas:
Practical and theoretical background in photonic and terahertz technology.
Hardware electronic co-design
Exploitation techniques and reverse-engineering
Low-level/software programming
We expect excellent, independent research and we are supporting publication of this
research at renowned international conferences and in leading scientific journals.
The Technische Universitt Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female
faculty members and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal
qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be
given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on
salary scales, which apply to the European International Projects.

Date
29. Februar 2016

Due to the international character of this topic, we can only accept PhD candidates
that have not been working/living in Germany for more than 12 months within the
last 3 years. As we target for early stage researchers, the PhD candidate must have
finished the master program not more than four years ago.
Application Formalities. Your application should include your current curriculum
vitae, MSc/Diploma certificates and grades, a letter of motivation stating your
interest in the position, and recommendation letters. Please send your electronic
application as one single PDF file to Dr. Shihab Al-Daffaie (shihab@imp.tudarmstadt.de) with the subject Application -ITN-CELTA.
