BASIC JOB PURPOSE


To provide for the day to day-clinical management of emergency patients under the care and direction of
the Director, Emergency Medicine and Emergency Staff Specialists to ensure a high quality of patient care.
To undertake administrative duties for the department under the direction of the Director,
Emergency Medicine and Emergency Staff Specialists to ensure that the emergency department is run
efficiently.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
RESPONSIBILITY AREA 1: Delivery of Service

Assess and formulate a management plans for patients attending or referred to the
Emergency Department.
Ensure that accurate and relevant patient documentation including admission, progress
notes, treatment sheets and discharge notes are completed by the registrar or resident.
Communication of assessment and management decisions to the appropriate
specialties, junior medical staff and nursing staff involved in patients medical care.
Notification to the appropriate speciality (parent unit) of patients requiring unit review
and/or admission.
Communication with the patient, or with immediate family where appropriate about
his/her condition and management.
Communication and coordinating effectively with the parent unit in regard to admission,
discharge, management plans, diagnostic requests and consultations. All major changes
in the patients condition should be conveyed to the parent unit.
Ensure adequate handover of all emergency patients.
The registrar will also liaise and effectively communicate with ANUMS and nursing staff
in relation to patient care/HEWS/By-pass.

Ensure a working knowledge of all emergency protocols including those relating to


drugs, power failure, infection control, codes etc.
Assist the Emergency Department in achieving its time-based targets, including the
National Emergency Access Target.

Performance Indicators:

Work as rostered, which may include cover for annual leave of other Emergency
Registrars or sick leave for the Admitting Officer in the event that no other cover can be
found.
See and assess patients presenting to the Emergency Department for treatment. The
registrar will carry out emergency management.
Consult with the Admitting Officer, Emergency Department Senior Medical Staff, Unit
Registrars and/or Consultant Medical Staff regarding patient management.
Assist with the supervision of more junior colleagues.
Be in charge of the resuscitation area when on duty.
Provide support and assistance to the Short Stay (Observation) Unit resident if required.
Occasionally perform Short Stay (Observation) Unit ward round on a weekdays or on
Saturday/Sunday as required by the absence of Emergency Department Senior Medical
Staff.
Receive handover of patients at the change of shift.
Assess urgent patients and non-urgent patients within 30 minutes and 2 hours
respectively of a referral.
Liaison with parent unit or unit consultant.
Ensure complete documentation of admission and progress notes, treatment sheets and
discharge notes in the medical record. Discharge summaries / GP letters should
accompany the patient at the time of discharge.

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 2: Quality of Improvement

Participation in the quality improvement activities of the Emergency Department.


Participation in audits conducted in the Emergency Department.

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 3: Teaching

The emergency registrar is expected to supervise the residents with respect to the writing of histories,
ordering of investigations, treatment sheets and the performance of procedures within the
Department.
The registrar will be expected to be actively involved in teaching, lectures and tutorials to nurses,
residents and medical students as necessary.
The registrar will participate in the weekly emergency medicine education sessions for FACEM
training. Journal presentations and discussions on specialised topics will be required. Attendance of
emergency registrars at education sessions is compulsory unless on night duty or on leave.
The emergency registrar will assist with the orientation of junior medical staff to the department.
In accordance with relevant awards, attempts will be made to provide sufficient time for personal
continuing medical education and professional development, attendance at hospital tutorials and
travel to off-campus education forums.

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 4: Research

To participate and carry out research projects under the direction of the Emergency Department
Senior Medical Staff, either on already established projects or initiation of new projects. Emergency
registrars are expected to be working towards or having satisfied their ACEM fellowship research
requirement (4.10.70).

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 5: Resource Utilisation

Coordination of patient admissions and discharges to ensure efficient utilisation of beds and patients
within the Emergency Department.

Commitment to introduction of computer technology including electronic record.

Any other duties at the direction of the Director, Emergency Medicine or Emergency Staff Specialists.
