Introduction:
It is a great privilege to be a Veterinarian as he / she has a major role to play in the
society for welfare of animals and inturn for well being of humans. In India Veterinary
Profession all along has been revolving around Livestock production system involving Cattle,
Buffalo, Sheep, Goats, Pigs, Horses and Poultry, but in the last 2-3 decades impetus started in

rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, love birds etc. The trade involved around pet industry in the
developed countries like USA, UK, Europe and Australia in terms of business in major malls is
around 20-30% and the same is around 5% in Asia in some countries and may be less than
1% in India. In the current decade the trend in animal industry in terms of growth has seen a
tremendous change. This is clearly evident from the number of companies or separate dairy /
poultry / pet / equine / laboratory animal divisions that have emerged in major companies in the
recent years. In the last 1-2 decades India has seen a positive growth in activities relating to
animals and has emerged as a strong component in agricultural industry. This has been
possible by the individual and collective efforts of policy makers and Veterinarians involved in
industries, animal owners, breeders, NGOs concerned with Animal Welfare, Kennel Clubs,
Philanthropists, IT & BT Companies etc.
In order to become a veterinary doctor a person has to complete the B.V.Sc. & A.H.

respected profession by the farming community in particular and the society in general. This is
the only profession which enables the graduates to be appointed as Class I Officers in the
