Power through Words.

This story reverberates with good intentions and a message of hope although in my
opinion, the message of the whole story wasnt properly distributed to the audience. It was cute,
weird and heartwarming though the characters were both problematic with themselves in such
complications like mental illness but nevertheless the movie was filled with funny scenes and
dialogues. I, speaking for myself, loved Tiffany and Patricks personality in the movie for they
were rudimentary. There were clichs like of course the leading lady was hot and attractive, the
same with our main star so you could easily know who our main characters are. They were both
sexy and attractive physically but messed up in the inside. I must admit, Im in awe for Tiffanys
fierce attitude and strong personality. She's rude, dirty, funny, foulmouthed, sloppy, sexy, vibrant
and vulnerable, sometimes all in the same scene, even in the same breath. As for Patrick, I
admired him for the passionate and charming ways of his. There's an ache in his funny, touching
and vital performance that resonates, the way how he reaches Nikki out even though his ex wife
betrayed him. Somehow, guilt also made its way to my emotions, realizing that having a Bipolar
Disease shouldnt be misunderstood and must be taken seriously for many people have been
claiming this disease although its just normal to feel happy then sad the next minute. My
favorite part of the movie was when Patrick was reading Hemingways book and literally threw
it out of the window due to its heartbreaking ending. It really cracked me up because thats
almost the same reaction I have when some author decided to broke my heart mercilessly.
Somehow, I was not satisfied by the ending. I think that its too clich and too easy for two
broken people to be together in just one snap but what could I expect? Its a movie. In the
beginning of the film, Patrick Solitano, our main star that has undiagnosed bipolar reminded
himself things that he thought for much clearer understanding of his own emotions by vocal level

use of the communication form called Intrapersonal Communication since he was preparing for
his leave at the hospital after eight months of treatment. By having a conversation with himself,
he was also encouraging his self- esteem by telling himself that hes going to be able to get Nikki
back, her ex wife. Another scene where he uses this communication is in the brawl between the
Eagles supporters, discouraging himself from joining the brawl by telling himself repeatedly the
words Im not gonna fight. since he promised his father not to do any damage. In the next
scene, you will notice another form of communication called Interpersonal that happens in the
support group just like in The Fault of Our Stars. The purpose of this communication is for
empathy, genuineness and to show understanding of how other peoples emotions interact and
ticks by discussing it within a small group of people. In this movie, you can see how people
interact socially through words and communication, theres mediated communication through
phone calls like how the institution informed Mrs. Dolores that Dannys (Patricks friend in the
hospital) leave was not approved, the written letter of Patrick for Nikki or when Tiffany and
Patrick talked about medical drugs which seemed to make them happy. A heavy load of
communication actually, was present in the film, given that communication is always present,
verbally or non-verbally for even silence also delivers a message although confusing and foggy.
For example, like how Mr. Patrick Sr. Solitanos face scrunched up in disapproval of Patricks
jogging wearing a garbage bag, how the teacher reacted anxiously around Patrick unveiling the
fear of being with someone who just came out from a mental hospital or how Tiffany ordered
Patrick to convey how much he missed Nikki by letting him think that shes Nikki and by
walking towards her slowly. There are also scenes like how Patrick woke up his parents one
midnight to pour out his disappointment due to a books ending, talking in a quick pace and
yapping how the ending should be happy or like the scene where Patrick is talking with his

therapist for treatment because communication is also used in expressing and pouring our
feelings out in order for more understanding of ones feelings and to lessen a burden of someone
(like how Ronnie told Patrick that he felt suffocated with all his responsibilities such as the baby,
his workmates and his wife.) Communication can also serve as a healing medication to people
who lack self-esteem, to the people who lack self awareness for they are somehow lost and
confused with who they are and it may also be a solution to people who are down and in grief,
example for what Tiffany did, telling Patrick to breathe, calm down and not let the song that
triggers his disease be a monster to him which effectively worked to cool him down. However,
communication also has the power to hurt and enslave someone like in the scene where Patrick
called Tiffany a slut unintentionally hurting her feelings or how Patrick awfully reacted to the
thought of him being together with Tiffany which of course offended Tiffanys feelings for
communication has the power to make someone change the way they act, think, do and perceive
life. Communication can make you feel emotions, both verbally and non verbally like when
Tiffany told Patrick the story how Tommy died and telling him after Thats a feeling. or the
pain visible on Patricks face while reading the letter he thought Nikki wrote(when Tiffany was
the one who really made it). It also serves as a bridge for understanding, an example is how
Patricks father opened up to him, Mr. Solitano telling his son that he just wanted to watch games
with him and bond with him that lead to clarity and improvement of relationship with his father
and also you cant miss the scene where Patrick finally opens up his real feelings for Tiffany.
Communication is indeed powerful, important and must be used in a fine manner for better
relationship with oneself and others as well for words can heal, hurt and change a person
perceive and feel.
