Summertime

love summer. Some people do not

like the heat, but Ill take heat over
snow any day of the week. I am very
happy to not own an snow shovel.

Summertime can also bring
out the bugs though. I think most of
us understand the value of bugs in the
garden. We just do not want to see them
inside our homes. Luckily, there are
essential oils that keep the bugs outside.
I keep several different oils on hand
because the oil used depends on the bug.
For the most part, just a few drops along
the outside of the house where ever the
bugs enter the house will keep them
outside. No smelly chemicals inside the
house. No danger to your kids or indoor
pets. I love essential oils.

Essential oils are also soothing
to sunburns. Yes, I know we have all
heard the warnings about too much
sun and what it can do to skin. But
sometimes (admit it) you just have to be
outdoors and enjoy the rays. When you
forget sunscreen and suffer from minor
sunburn, lavender essential oil can be
very soothing and take the sting out of a
burn.

One warning about oils and
the sun. Remember that citrus oils are
photosensitive. That means that if you
ingest them in large quantities and
spend too much time in the sun, you
might end up looking as if you bought
cheap bronzer that turned you orange.
Not a pretty sight. So be careful about
using any citrus essential oil (lemon,
orange, tangerine, grapefruit, etc.) if you

plan to spend lots of time outdoors.

Remember that your skin can
take a beating during the summer and
not just from the sun. When you sweat,
it is easy to get dehydrated. Even minor
dehydration can impact your organs
and skin very quickly. Be sure you are
drinking plenty of water all summer
long. Even if you are not spending
hours each day in the sunshine, it is still
easy to get dehydrated in the summer
months.

And of course, extra dirt from
the dry climate as well as additional
summer sweat acts as a sort of natural
exfoliation to your skin. This is not
necessarily bad. Just be careful to use
enough external moisturizer (lotions) as
well as internal moisturizer (drink more
water!)

And what is summer without
some baseball, hot dogs, and apple
pie? Not summer, if you ask me!
Our bodies can take a beating in the
summer months because we change
our diets in the summer. Some of us
make more radical changes than others.
If you are not a regular at the weekly
farmers markets around town, please
make the time to attend. The fresh and
locally grown fruits and vegetables will
keep your diet on the right track and
minimize your cravings for yummy
frozen yogurt and more sugary treats.

Summer is a wonderful time of

Geoff Thurman...
Making Waves

eoff Thurman, singer, songwriter,

multi-instrumentalist, producer,
actor...whats in a name? He has
included elements of jazz, classical, newage and worldbeat in his music. On a oneon-one exclusive interview I asked, Mr.
Thurman What can you tell Fresno, about
Geoff Thurman? He smiled modestly and
answered, WOW! Well, in the words of
the great Winston Churchill, Im a riddle,
wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. Im a
husband and father, the two labels I love the
most, in addition to being a musician. I feel
like creativity is who I am and what I do, as

opposed to doing something to make money
to survive.

The Cincinnati, Ohio raised singer
and father, moved to Fresno in December of
2011 with his wife Lisa Toncray-Thurman.
Mr. Thurman spoke openly about his journey
as a musician. He began singing publicly
at age nine in the Cincinnati All City Boy
Choir, in addition he was an understudy for
the touring version of Leonard Bernsteins
Mass in the 5th grade. In the mid-70s Geoff
began writing songs during his senior year
in high school. His mother had dreams of

him becoming a teacher. However, he soon
learned that, no matter what was planned,
God had other plans for him. While in
college, a mentor gave him one of his guitars.
That pretty much sealed the deal for the
multi-talent singer. He started traveling to
promote his music performing live nationally
and overseas since 1976. The list also includes
Engelmann Cellar, and Franks Place at the
Warnor Center for the Performing Arts
here in the Central Valley. He has also had
the privilege to accompany Ricky Skaggs at
Nashvilles Ryman Auditorium.

Geoff Thurman is clearly a man of
many creative talents. Along with his musical
exploration and experimentation, Geoff has
participated in an interesting mix of projects
such as acting and performing original music
on a local televion show called, Sick Wit
It! Geoff states, I had the chance to tour
overseas extensively, part of which was a show
in Brazil for around 6,000. Id say thats pretty
significant. Last year, we produced a live
DVD. Pretty soon, Im jumping into a new
venture in creating music for film. I think I
need to remain open to new ventures in an
attempt to better what I just finished. That
way, Ill stay fresh and relevant.

In the interview, I asked Geoff
who influenced him musically? He paused
for a moment then responded, I think Im
always influenced by challenging musicians. I
grew up in the church and got involved with
Contemporary Christian music and Country
music as a result of my first cut by Amy Grant
and through my relationships with Glen
Campbell & Ricky Skaggs. But, I grew up
listening to Joe Cocker, the Beatles & Jimi
Hendrix. My brother, Tommy and I had boxes
of records (33s and 45s) from Stevie Wonder,
Marvin Gaye. After my song, Jehovah got
recorded and I moved to Nashville, I learned
more about the craft of songwriting from guys

who were recorded by everyone from Conway
Twitty & Johnny Cash to Gladys Knight
& Smokey Robinson folks like Harlan
Howard, Curly Putnam & Bobby Braddock.

Geoff Thurmans songs like Dirty
Little Secret and To See Her Smile from his
2012 release called Deeper Shades have also
been featured on radio station K Jewel FM.
His most recent release was filmed January
of last year, Fresh takes live at Engelmann
Cellars. Geoff Thurman has a unique sound,
the singers intensity and determination
continues to attract new fans of all ages.

The talented singer also commented
on what it is like to be a musician in Fresno.
The city of Fresno is filled with ALL of the
arts and a lot of potential apathy because
folks dont know how to break out of the
scene. If you only create or play for the folks
in your neighborhood, be that the bars or
local television or theater, you stand the risk
of stunting growth. Stunted creativity scares
me more than almost anything. But heres
the thing: Fresno isnt any different than any
other city in the nation that doesnt have a
direct path to creative success. I cant wait to
see what new BIG things come out of this
town. Creative people in this place are simply
brilliant. I think its only a matter of time.
