Correlation and Regression in KYPLOT

1- Enter your data set in the worksheet

2- Perform the mathematical linearization. In this example, The Freundlich isotherm is

expressed by the following empirical equation :

q e K F C e1 / n
where KF is the Freundlich adsorption constant ((mg/g)(L/g)n) and 1/n is a measure of the
adsorption intensity.
Freundlich isotherm can be linearized by taking the logarithm of both sides of the
equation to get:
log(qe ) log( K F )

1
log(Ce )
n

The mathematical manipulation of data is done by taking the log of one data point, then
copy and paste to take the logs of all data points.

and you will get all the logs like this

3- To perform a correlation analysis, first highlight the data set under investigation

Then click STATISTICS, PARAMETRIC TEST, LINEAR CORRELATION

When you sea the Linear Correlation screen, accept the defaults unless OUTPUT
where you mark New Spread, then click OK. We will discuss the significance level and
confidence level later in class.
The results of correlation calculations will be displayed in a new work sheet (also called
spread sheet)

You can repeat the above procedure to obtain correlation analysis of other data sets.
4- To perform simple (linear) regression analysis, you will start by highlighting
the data set as shown above in page 4, then click STATISTICS, REGRESSION
ANALYSIS, SIMPLE REGRESSION

The results of the regression analysis will be displayed in a new spread sheet, part of this
spread sheet is shown below

These results represent a complete formal linear-regression analysis. We will discuss

some of them in class.
5- If you want to draw the data points and the regression lines you will have to take
another route. First highlight the linearized data and change the formulae (logs) to
values (just numbers) as shown below:

The next step is to arrange the data so that all

the Xs (for the 3 data sets) are displayed in one
column, while the Ys are displayed in the next
3 columns.

After highlighting (selecting) the data range,

right click and choose Create Graph

In the data type screen, click OK to accept the defaults

Then in the Graph Type and Options screen, choose not to show the connecting lines,
then click OK

A Figure window will be created as shown below

Left click inside the figure to select it (as shown by the blue outline) then click on the FIT
button in the menu

10

By default, the fit screen will display the data of the first data set. Choose Polynomial
Regression and choose Degree of Polynomial =1 ,

then click apply fit and you will see the regression line of data set number 1

Select the graph again and click the Fit button from the menu

11

In the Fit for Graph screen click NEW FIT, then select data set 2. You will see the data
of set 2 in the spread sheet in the FIT screen

12

Then choose Polynomial regression and polynomial order =1

and Apply Fit

Now you see the dashed line representing the regression line for data set 2. By default,
the regression line is solid. It can be changed to dashed or other color from the Fit
Patterns menu

13

Repeat the same steps to get a finalized graph that looks something like this.
