2.2 Examinations
The exam system in Thailand differs from in Germany by the fact that there is not only a final
exam.
The exams are divided into midterm exam and final exam. The midterm exam takes place at
the end of December, the final exam at the end of the semester (end of February/beginning
of March). During that time you should also work for seminar papers or homeworks, partly in
form of a group assignment and partly as a single exercise (Comparably with the homework
or seminar paper at the FH Gelsenkirchen).
In most cases the interest rate to be reached amounts for midterm exams between 30% and
40%, for seminar paper and homework between 10% and 15% and for final exams between
40 and 50%.
By this system it is easier for the students to estimate themselves and their achievements
after the midterm exams. If these are not enough the student still has the chance to reach
their aim with the seminar papers or in the final exams.

2.3 Courseworks
The lectures or seminars in Thailand were almost like in Germany.
In some lectures the students were integrated more often into discussions, but ordinarily
there was no difference.
For the department of Business Administration the lectures general took place in seminar
rooms. This allowed a better overview about the students to the professors, because the
rooms had only space for approx. 30 - 40 students.
A lecture lasted exactly 3 hours. The lecture times were Monday till Saturday between 9 am
and 7 pm.
The contents of the lectures were to be pursued in scripts and in books. These served
exactly like in Germany for the preparation on the exams.

3 Getting Started
3.1 Timeline for preparation before going abroad
For an exchange semester in Thailand you must prepare some things.
First of all your preparations should start with the application at the Rajamangala University
of Technology, Thanyaburi (RMUTT). For this application you must fill out a form sheet which
requires a photograph. After you get the confirmation from Thailand you can start with
following preparations. For this journey you need a passport which is longer than a half year
valid. If this is not the case, you have to apply for a new one.
The longest time for preparation need the inoculations. Your doctor informs you
which are important for this journey. Simultaneous you should book the flight to
Thailand. There is a possibility to get a student tariff that offers STA Travel. We
paid for the flight 750 Euros by the airline Emirates. For the student tariff you must show an
international student ID Card. This card you can apply at the AStA Shop of our university.
The card costs 12 Euros and requires a photograph. It is important to contract an Oversea
Health Cover which requires your flight ticket. You not need to conclude the contract by your
insurance. It is worthwhile to compare the offers from others firms, too.
The next step is to request the release of tuition fees at the registrars office in
Gelsenkirchen. Dont forget to apply for the student loan BAfG subject to the condition that
you fulfill the qualifications. You can also get a financial support by the faculty of Business
Administration in the amount of 600 Euros. For the application you must fulfill some
qualifications. The requests you can download on the website of our faculty or you can get it
in the bureaus of the faculty. A few weeks before you leave Germany you can apply the visa
which you get from the Thai consulate in Essen. For this Education visa you need a
photograph, the complete form sheet and 50 Euros.
One of the last steps is to change your mobile phone tariff. In Thailand you can buy a new
SIM Card to communicate with the other students. To call your family or friends it is cheaper
to use Skype with your laptop. The last steps are to prepare with your doctor your first-aid kid
which is very important and to get the last inoculations.
Nothing else can go wrong now only the departure waits!

3.2 Financing studies abroad

Many German students are used to finance their studies by part time
working or other student jobs; this is not possible in Thailand. The
Education Visa regulation is not allowing foreign students to work in
Thailand, but there are several ways how to finance the studies abroad.
The most popular way is to apply for the federal student loan, which should be done six
month or earlier before starting the studies abroad. Otherwise the payment will be delayed.
Some of us applied the student loan five month before starting the studies abroad and got
the payment with a delay of 3 month. For this case it is important to have a financial
coverage by the parents or by other credit facilities.
The federal student loan covers the costs of the flight ticket, the basic costs of living and
insurance costs. The amount of this loan depends on the income of the parents and the
personal financial situation. In addition to this financing system, there is a financial support by
the faculty of Business Administration in the amount of 600 Euros under special
circumstances, as to say if a student has earned 45 or more credits until the beginning of the
exchange semester.
Its also possible to take out an education loan. This loan is provided by the Federal Ministry
of education and research. They are offering this loan with favorable credit terms. The
registration for a loan like this should be made timely. Also some Banks offer education loans
with favorable credit terms.
Some religious organizations and parties offer scholarships for excellent students.
The costs for the Visa are 50 Euro for 90 days, the extension will be made by the
Rajamangala University Thanyaburi and this will cost another 40 Euro.
During the semester in Thailand, therefore is no charge of tuition fees at the home university,
there for its important to request the discharging of tuition fees at the registrars office in
Gelsenkirchen. The basic costs of living are between 300 and 500 Euro per month,
accommodation included.
Students from the University of Applied Science Gelsenkirchen who would like to study at the
Rajamangala University Thanyaburi can study free of charge.
Studying abroad in Thailand is a great opportunity to travel around Thailand and some other
Asian countries. Its advisable to have some seed money to have the possibility of profit of
the advantage traveling around Asia for reasonable prices. This great experience should not
fail on a lack of money.

4 Living in Thanyaburi
4.1 The City
Thanyaburi is a very nice district in Pathum Thani Province. Its around 40 km in the north of
Bangkok. Thanyaburi was built by order of King Rama V (Chulalongkorn) in 1901. The city
name is translated to Rice city. It is close to the main water resource of Thanyaburi Klong
Rangsit. The city is departed into some subdistricts and the university where we lived is
along Klong Hoc (canal six). On Klong Hoc (thai:six) there is one main road (called:
Pathisanroad) with lots of supermarkets, shops, cook shops and restaurants where you can
buy very cheap food so that you dont need to cook by your own. If you are sick you can also
find doctors, pharmacies and dentists where medical care is cheap and where you get
medicine without prescriptions. But the best solution is to go to the doctor at the campus
because you get treatment and medicine for free. If you are bored in the evening you can
enjoy the nightlife of Thanyaburi. There are lots of bars with live and DJ music every night
until 1am. Motorbike and taxi ranks are also quite easy to find everywhere. If you want you
can also buy a bicycle or a motorbike for the time you stay there and sell it after youre
finished. But if you need a motorbike it depends on where you stay in Thanyaburi.
Near the campus you can also find a little night market every evening. It starts around 6 pm
and you can buy a lot of nice clothes (shirts, shoes, bags, etc.), clocks, jewel or house wares.
On Tuesday there are the most people and the most booths. If you like go shopping, going to
the cinema or bowling, the Future Park Rangsit is recommended. It is colourable the biggest
shopping centre in Asia. Its not so far away from Klong hoc and you can reach it with a
Minivan for 20 Baht (around 40 cents) or by taxi for 100 baht. There you could really do
whatever you want and you will also find a lot of international shops and restaurants.
Its advantageous if you can speak some Thai or have a Thai dictionary because many
people cant speak English or just some words.

4.2 Accommodation
In general our accommodations were pretty nice. The German girls and boys lived separated
in different areas.
The girls lived in a dormitory just for girls in a very safe house with a night watchman and
chips as keys for the entrance door and the elevator. Our rooms had a very beautiful and
modern design with a balcony and a private bathroom with toilet and shower (just cold
TN-RMUTT-Student Handbook-090102.doc

water!). The rooms included a big bed, a big board, a computer desk, a writing desk, a makeup commode and a fridge to rent for 150 Baht a month (around 3 Euro). On the ground floor
you could wash your clothes in washing machines for 20 Baht or go to the laundry service on
the street. Our accommodation was very close to the main road and the campus area.
Therefore we didnt need a motorbike or bicycle.
The boys lived in apartments around 5 minutes away of the campus area. They used
motorbikes, a bicycle, a taxi or hitcher to go to university. They lived all together in one small
house close to the dormitory. The rooms were made for two because the beds, the writing
tables and the boards existed two times in one apartment. They also had a private bathroom,
a garden and an area in front of the house where they could sit outside. A night watcher was
also present.
We paid around 5000 Baht a month (100-120 Euros).
At the beginning we had to buy the most important things like pillows, blankets, cleaning
agent, etc. The best idea is to go by taxi to the Big C or Tesco Lotus. These are very big
supermarkets with lots of products close to Klong Hoc.

4.3 Travelling to Thanyaburi

from the airport
From the airport its the best way to go to Thanyaburi by taxi. But be careful because there
are lots of taxi drivers but not every taxi is good. As a main fact you should just go by taximeter and not by fixed price or by private taxi. The best taxi rank on the airport is upstairs.
There you just have to cross the street and there you will see many taxis which go by
taximeter. You can tell the taxi driver he should go to Pathumthani / Thanyaburi on Klong hoc
to the university Rajamankorn.
from Bangkok/Victory Monument
From a central point of Bangkok, the victory monument
(thai: anu sawali), its quite simple to go to Thanyaburi.
You can go by public bus with number 538 for 19 Baht.
But the bus is very slow and its not so easy for the first
time to find the right bus stop because there are so
many of them. The second possibility is to go by
Minivan. You start at victory monument and go to the future park. There you change and go
to Klong Hoc. It costs 45 Baht.

4.4 Travelling in Thailand / Asia

Thailand and its neighbouring countries offer a lot of
sights and travel destinations to discover. Although the
RMUTT is located on the country side, it just takes
approximately 1.5 hours to reach the heart of Bangkok
(q.v. 4.3 Travelling to Thanyaburi), where various travel agencies offer their services.
Travelling in Thailand and discovering its great culture and tradition can take a long time.
Before starting your journey you should always plan your trips in Thailand carefully and know
about your financial budget. Although the prices seem to be very reasonable, you can lose
the financial overview, because of the exchange rate (1euro = 45bath) and the tantalizing
prices in shops, restaurants, bars, Taxi etc.
By bus
In principle the cheapest way to travel around the country is to take the bus. Dependent on
the distance to the destination there is the opportunity to take an overnight bus or an ordinary
public bus. Mostly the public bus is even cheaper (than the overnight bus), but it takes more
time and can be very exhausting, caused by the enduring stops, annoying noise and
uncomfortable seats. However, it seems appropriate for short distances (Pattaya, Rayong,
Nakhon Nayok) to take a public bus.
The overnight buses are secure, clean, often offer good service(s) and are ideal to travel to
far away destinations in the North (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai) or in the South of Thailand
(Krabi, Phuket, Surat Thani). Even some Islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh
Chang) are accessible by bus. By combination ticket the bus (or Minibus) cross over by a car
ferry and drops you off at the requested point or just drops you off at a pier from where you
can catch a ferry. In Thailand you find usually, no matter where you are, options to travel to
further destinations, whether day trips (Phuket to Similan Islands; Koh Samui to Koh
Phangan; Chiang Rai to the Golden Triangle) or Connections to further places. So you can
go by bus until Singapore and discover the beauty of South East Asia by passing Thailand
and Malaysia.
By train
Another and also very convenient way to travel around Thailand and South East Asia is to
take the train. The costs for a ticket are comparable to the busses, dependent on the
requested class. We advise against to take a journey in the 3rd class, because of very bad
comfort and a high burglary rate. This information is based on word of mouth. Although the
TN-RMUTT-Student Handbook-090102.doc

train cannot compare to the flexibility of a bus, the tracks go through almost all important
tourist areas from where you can transfer.
By air-plane
For those who are not interested in long journeys to arrive their destination, there is the
comfortable and fast opportunity to take an airplane. Bangkok has two Airports, Dong
Mueang, the old International Airport, which is
now only open for domestic flights and the new
Suvarnabhumi International Airport with its
worldwide biggest terminal. In Thailand almost every tourist region can be reached by plane.
Even Koh Samui, a small island in the Gulf of Thailand possesses an Airport.
The price for an air-plane ticket depends as always on the distance of the journey and the
favoured airline. Air-Asia e.g. is a Malaysian low-cost-carrier airline that connects almost all
countries in Asia to reasonable prices. The bookings can be made under www.airasia.com or
at several Air Asia Counters around Bangkok. From the Rajamangala University, the nearest
Counter is at the Future Park Rangsit (30min by bus).
There are also other airlines offering cheap tickets for domestic flights, like One-Two-go,
Bangkok Airways or Nok Air.

Overview of Costs
The monthly accumulating costs are always up to somebodys liquidity and Lifestyle.
Thailand can be very cheap, like if you decide to take a ordinary barber in Thanyaburi, or can
be very expensive, in a Hair-Style-Salon in Bangkok. The following costs are expenditures
that accumulate in your daily life in Thanyaburi.

5 Keeping the Equilibrium

5.1 Sports
Sport Activities at RMUTT
You have the possibility to choose the subject activities.
In your free time you can use all sport areas. All Activities
at the RMUTT Campus are free of charge.
On the campus there is a big stadium and several
match-fields to play football or futsal in your spare time.
Futsal is very similar to usual football as we know it from
European League football. The difference is, that they
use a smaller ball which is a much harder and heavier,
so it`s more easier to do some special acrobatic moves.
Its also allowed to shoot against walls to do some
advance tactics. These tricks are also necessary
because they used smaller sized goals.
The RMUTT owns a baseball stadium and also a big coliseum where you have the facility to
play volleyball, basketball, badminton and table tennis. Also outside its possible to play
these kinds of sport and beach volleyball.

TN-RMUTT-Student Handbook-090102.doc

Even inside the coliseum there is the sporting

gym, the opening hours are from 4 p.m. to 9
p.m. Every evening at 6 p.m., in the front of
the gym there starts an aerobic course.

There is an outside-area with umpteen

tennis- and squash fields.

On the campus

as well you can find a

swimming-pool, the opening hours are

Monday to Friday:

4 p.m. 9 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday: 2 p.m. 9 p.m.

Sport Activities in Thanyaburi

In Thanyaburi there are two Thaiboxing schools where you have the possibility to learn Muay
Thai. One hour costs 100 Baht.
Thai Boxing is a form of hard martial art practiced in large parts of the world, including
Thailand, where Thai Boxing is the national sport. Muay Thai is referred to as "The Science
of Eight Limbs", as the hands, shins, elbows, and knees are all used extensively in this art. It
is one of the oldest martial arts worldwide. Thai Boxing was acquired by the warfare of
traditional Thai soldiers, who exert it when they couldnt use javelin and sword. The famous
move from Thai boxing is the kick with the blank shin bone.

5.2 Other activities

Huge and multi-million city of Bangkok has no bounds, thus, in addition to sport, this fabulous
city has plenty of places of interest and sights where you can entertain yourself or take
advantage of your spare time.
You can start your Bangkok tour with visiting the Grand Palace, a complex of temple
constructions on which territory the Thai Buddhists sacred place, Temple of Emerald
Buddha, is situated, and Temple of Golden Buddha made of the golden monolith weighing 5
tons, then you can take one-hour trip along the channels of Bangkok on the traditional Thai
pirogue and have dinner in the national restaurant.

Ayutthaya tour
A tour to the former capital of Thailand is a trip by river with a stop at
Bang Pa-In Summer Palace situated in the large park. The palace is
a complex combining architectural styles of China, Europe and
Thailand. In Ayutthaya you can see temple and palace of Si Sanphet
(main temple of the former capital) and Mongkhol Bopitr Temple
where the largest Buddhas statue in bronze is located, as well as
other sights. You can return to Bangkok by bus.

The Crocodile Farm

The Crocodile Farm is considered the worlds
largest farm where more than 30 000 freshwater
and seawater crocodiles live. It is situated in
Samuthprakarn, 30 kilometers to the Southeast
from Bangkok. In addition to the crocodiles, it has
the zoo with specially trained elephants, gibbons,
lions and snakes, and the Dinosaurs Museum.

TN-RMUTT-Student Handbook-090102.doc

Lumphini Park
Lumphini Park is the largest park situated in the business and
trade centre of the city, at the crossroad of Rama IV Rd. and
Wireless Rd. The stadium where Thai box matches are held,
hippodrome, many embassies and expensive hotels are located
nearby.

Mahboonkrong Centre
The MBK is one of the large shopping malls
situated in the centre of Bangkok where you can
buy nearly everything, from food to tailored
costumes. There you can walk for hours, since
the wide variety of goods really impresses. But
most attractive about this place is that in MBK
mall you can bargain on price until it falls to the
minimum, which is uncommon for the European
malls.

Siam Paragon
Siam Paragon is also a huge shopping mall
situated in front of MBK mall, but the
difference

is

that

the

former

includes

expensive-branded boutiques where you

can buy even such cars as Lamborghini or
BMW. These mall shoppers certainly consist
of financially wealthy people, that is why it
should be noted that students are rare
visitors here.

6 Additional useful information

Speaking of culture, I would like to emphasize that sometimes the culture of Thai people is
very different comparing to Europeans. However, I am concerned that you are not interested
in nuances and details. That is why I will talk about our every day experiences you will
definitely also get there.
The first thing that you do, when you meet people, is to greet them. Thais do it with hands in
front of the face and they band their heads a little bit to the ground. This way of greeting is
called Wai, and if you never seen it before, it might be comparable to a prayer. It may look
weird, but I recommend you to start doing it immediately after coming to Thailand. Those sort
of actions are highly appreciated by natives. Remember; do not put your hands while doing
Wai that your fingers are lower than your nose. It is a mark that your position is higher than
the position of the one you are greeting! The higher your hands, the more respect you are
showing, but do not exaggerate. This will make you look silly and funny.
And if we speak of fun, the Thai love to have fun and to smile a lot. Thailand is also called
The country of smiles. That is why you will almost never know, what the natives are really
thinking. They always want to help you. For example, if you ask someone about the right
direction, he would definitely show you one. But you can never know if it is the right one! My
advice is to ask at least 3 other people.
In non touristic regions of Thailand there are only a few people able to speak English. It
would be definitely an advantage, to learn at least a few words like Hello, Sorry, How
much?, How are you, How can I get to?,Good, Bad and so on. As in every story, the
more you know the more you get. The best thing is to start learning Thai in your native
country. It would be also a great deal, to ask the Thai University to provide a Thai class at
least one time a week. I am concerned it is possible, if you will start to manage it early
enough. The Thai grammar is pretty primitive comparing to German group of languages. The
writing is very complicated, but I am sure, for 4 months you dont really need it.
Before flying to Thailand you should communicate to some people from the university, so
everything will be prepared for your arrival (transport from airport), your accommodation and
so on. )
After arrival you should try to find the nearest 7-11 shop. They work 24-7-365, so you can
always get something to eat and to drink there.
TN-RMUTT-Student Handbook-090102.doc

According to my opinion, the best way to move across Thanyaburi is the motorbike taxi. It is
cheap and convenient. Even if you are afraid of such things, you never know until you try.
Those motorbikes will save you a lot of money, comparing to normal taxi. 20 Baht is the short
way, 30 Baht a little bit longer one. Hiring taxi, you pay 35 only for hiring it. And do not forget
hitchhiking! We traveled a lot like that. Its really fun and costs nothing. The best way to
hitchhike in Thailand is to try to stop some pick - ups, where you can sit on the back side.
The main advantages of the pick-up are the followings: The natives would like to give you a
ride, and they do it, without to be afraid of you (youre on the back). You would like to get a
free ride, and you get it, with out to be afraid of natives (youre on the back). The wind is just
perfect.
Traveling in Thailand is very easy. I recommend you not to book the transfers, but to inform
yourself about bus terminals, bus stops and stuff like that. Everything is easy going there
concerning that case. If you are going to big touristic regions, the booking of a hotel is also
not necessary, of course if you are not visiting Pattaya for the New Year party. However, by
traveling to small islands I would recommend you to book a room per internet.
In the end I would like to give you some more practical advices:
Use minivans to get to Bangkok. They are much faster than public buses and much cheaper
than taxi. You will find a minivan stop near 108 shop paced on the right side of

the

entrance to the RMUTT. 20 Baht and you are in Rangsit near Future Park - one of the
biggest shopping malls in Asia. Another 20 Baht and you are in Bangkok - Victory
monument. From there you can easily travel across Bangkok using BTS - Sky Train or
subway, there are very convenient.
Well, thats all folks! Read more about great Kingdom of Thailand and remember the more
you know, the more you get.
Have a nice trip!!!
