CHAPTER 2: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

2.1. Research Design

The research study undertaking aims to create a basis on designing the proposed high
rise mixed use development that will be an architectural response to mitigate air pollution in the
Metro. The following data would be gathered to come up with comprehensive proposal.
2.1.1. Gathering of Data
After formulating hypothesis, gathering can be achieved on different source of
information:
a. Libraries
The national library is the most reliable sources of information on books, journals and
others on library research and related studies about the research of a mixed use high
rise building. PUP-CEA library can also be a reliable source of information such as on
architectural books, magazines, or thesis books that can help on further developing of
the proposed development.

b. Internet Web
Information that can be gathered through internet are the newest technologies and
concepts use in mixed use high-rise buildings with regards to:

Maintaining indoor and outdoor air quality

High-rise building construction and design
Innovative and sustainable design and technologies
Air purifying building technologies and materials

c. Observation/ Site inspection

It is conducted for personal experience and evaluation of the present condition of the site
that will guide the researchers in its planning and designing phase. Behavior of traffic
and people, and the present condition of the site would be assessed.
d. Foreign and Local Case Studies
Case Studies are used for space arrangement, existing development problems and
positive factors, behavioral pattern and other architectural elements of retail spaces,
residential and office condominiums.
e. Government and private agencies
PAG-ASA, Quezon City Hall and PHIVOLCS for climatological, atmospherically and

geophysical data
City Land Use Planning Division for city land use zoning and other development
considerations
1

Quezon City Hall for demographic data

Quezon City Hall and Land Registration Authority for technical description
National Mapping and Resource Information (NAMRIA) for topographic map, slope

and elevation
Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) for implementing rules and
regulation regarding commercial and condominium developments

f. Philippine Building Laws

National Building Code of the Philippines (PD 1096)

Accessibility Law (BP 344)
National Structural Code of the Philippines (RA 6541)
National Plumbing Code of the Philippines (RA 1378)
Code on Sanitation of the Philippines (PD 856)
Fire Code of the Philippines 2008 (RA 9514)
Condominium Act (RA 4726)

e. Philippine Environmental Laws

Clean Air Act (CAA) of 1999 (RA 8749)

Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 (RA 9275)
Philippine Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (PESWMA) of 2000 (RA 9003)

2.1.2. Analysis of Gathered Data

Different key maps and plans gathered will be organized and analyzed in order have a basis for
the design solution.
Data Classification/ Organization
Classification of spaces and developments between commercial, residential, office and
hotel developments. Differentiation of the laws, guidelines and other data according to
project and research topic.
Projection Method
Projection of the target users of the different developments in order to meet the needs of
expected occupants.
Statistical Analysis
Analysis of the gathered demographic, climatological and socio-economic data to
identify the needed establishments or spaces in the proposed project.
Synthesis
Assessment of the data gathered to be able to evaluate and to create general
conclusion.

2.1.3. Architectural Programming

Provision of architectural space programming for major zone within the proposed project:
2

Administration Zone
Commercial Space Zone
Office Condominium Zone
Residential Condominium Zone
Recreational Zone
Utility Zone

2.1.4. Evaluation
A. Conclusion
After analyzing the data and considering critical aspects of the study, next is the
perception and conclusion about the study. Response to what the study is all about, how
it has made significance to the community, and why it should be undertaken, to meet the
expectancy of the proponents.

B. Recommendation
Following conclusion, creating a recommendation that the high rise mixed use
development will be proposed as a solution to the problem of. It should discuss that
IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM
the proposed project will be significant in its environment and the environmental system
can affect positivelyDISTINGUISHING
the energy consumption
of the building and improve the quality of
