Two MCC students are

All-Michigan Scholars
SIDNEY — Two Montcalm Community Col-
lege students were recognized recently at the All-
Michigan Academic Awards Program and Lun-
cheon in Lansing.
Each Michigan community college is invited to
nominate two students for the annual recognition,
which is sponsored by the Michigan Community
HENKEL College Association and Phi Theta Kappa Interna-
tional Honor Society. MCC selected Kelly Critten-
den of Greenville and Jamie Henkel of Pierson as
its 2010 All-Michigan Scholars. Forty-seven stu-
dents from 23 Michigan community colleges were
recognized during the March 30 luncheon.

Days to feature 20
hot-air balloons first
weekend in June
CARSON CITY – The 38th annual Carson City
Frontier Days will be “a weekend to celebrate” ac-
cording to event organizers. The festival will take
place Thursday, June 3, through Sunday, June 6, in
Carson City.
“Our group works for an entire year to bring the
best celebration we can to the community,” said Car-
son City Frontier Days President Lainie Niemi. “It is
our goal to provide a great, family-friendly event to
the community and to visitors so that everyone has
a wonderful time, all without breaking their budget.
Our sponsors are the best; we are honored to have
them. And we’re especially excited about the addi-
tion of Saturday-night fireworks this year.”
Hot-air balloons will be the showcase event of
the festival again this year, with 20 pilots on deck
to take center stage in the sky to thrill the crowds.
Each balloon is sponsored by a different individual
or business in the community.
The title sponsors for the entire Frontier Days
weekend are Carson Health Network/Carson City
Hospital and Sparrow. The site host is Carson City-
Crystal High School, which is where the majority of
the planned activities will be taking place.
“We know how important it is to help support
the continuation of this event in any way we can,”
said Carson City Hospital President and CEO Bruce
Traverse, FACHE. “It’s the biggest annual event in
our immediate area, and we look forward to meet-

CARSON CITY – The Carson
City-Crystal Area Schools Founda-
tion (CCCASF) has donated $1,000
to Carson City-Crystal Middle School
8th-grader Adeline Hummel toward a
musical experience trip with Blue Lake
International this summer. Hummel
has been playing the French horn since
she was in 6th grade, and will be joining
students from throughout the Midwest
to perform for several weeks in Europe.
“This will be a great experience for
me, and I can not wait to share it with
everyone when I get back,” said Hum-
mel, who has never been to Europe. “I
really have enjoyed Carson City-Crystal
Area Schools all my life, and everyone
has been a real support, and has helped
me to get where I am.”
Hummel is the daughter of Larry
and Kriss Hummel of Carson City. She
is also a member of the Carson City-
Crystal Middle School Band, and per-
forms regularly with the Mid-Michigan
Youth Symphony in Lansing.
“The foundation is able to raise
money for great things such as this
through fundraisers such as the yearly
golf outing,” said CCCASF President
Nancy Seals. The CCCASF 4th Annual
Golf Outing will be at 9 a.m. on Friday,
August 20, 2010, at Huckleberry Creek
Golf Course in Pewamo.

New Directions for
Lakeview Seniors
The Lakeview Area Seniors will begin their
Tuesday, June 1st. meeting at 12:30 rather
than 1:00. The time change will allow the se-
niors to experience a dinner prepared by the
Montcalm Commission on Aging. A donation
of $2.50 per person is suggested to cover the
cost of the meal. All seniors are welcome.
Reservations for the dinner are necessary and

The regular meeting will be held 1:00 to
3:00. Bingo will be the activity, and white el-

Vera Farrell age 68 of Howard
City passed away May 5, 2010 at
her residence. She was preceded
in death by her parents Carl and
Sally (Sigrid) Bruinsma and Joe
Farrell, a brother Paul Farrell and
a niece Jeannine Farrell. Vera re-
tired from GM Alpine Ave. Trim
Plant and was a member of local
1231 as well as a life long member
of the Wayland VFW post. Surviv-
ing are her children Carla Welch
and Steve Welch both of Howard
City, her Granddaughters Amanda
and Andrea of Howard City and
great granddaughtesr and the joys
of her life Madison Rae and Payton.

Luke Cook Jr.
Luke Cook Jr. age 80 of Howard
City, passed away May 10, 2010 at
his residence. He was born June 6,
1929 in Ensley Township the son of
Luke Sr. and Elva (Topping) Cook.
During his working years he worked
for Grand Rapids Die Cast for 35
years as a supervisor. He enjoyed
hunting and outdoor projects. In
1950 he married Elaine Hills who
survives. Also surviving are two
sons, Luke (Janis) Cook III of How-
ard City, David Cook of Edmore,
two daughters, Darlene (Rick)
Wolgamott of Howard City, Debbie
(Bob) McDonald of Bridgman, 11
Grandchildren and 13 Great Grand-
children, one sister Thelma Darling
of Fremont, one brother Marland
(Jan) Cook of Howard City, and
several nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his par-
ents, a sister Verna Cook, and three

cis. Funeral services took place on
Thursday, May 13, at the Heckman
Funeral home with Pastor Lucky
Fulton officiating with burial in the
Reynolds Cemetery. Memorials to
the Parkinson’s Foundation may be

This year’s Baccalaureate, The Dash, is a faith celebra-
tion designed by the Senior Class of 2010. All Seniors are
invited to participate and attend with their families and
friends.
This service will include worship, testimonies by the
Seniors, a skit/drama, a message by former TCHS grad
Chad Curtis, and a tine of prayer and dedication of the Se-
niors to God’s keeping grace.
The Baccalaureate will be 6 p.m. on May 16 at the Tri
County High School Gym.

Junior Nursing Award
from Hope College
Jeana Longoria, a Hope College junior from Howard
City, received the department of nursing’s Junior Award
during the annual Honors Convocation on Thursday, April
29, 2010. This award is presented to a junior student who,
in the estimation of the nursing faculty, demonstrates
outstanding performance in the classroom and in clini-
cal practice. The award is a book donated by a publisher.
Jeana also was recognized for having been inducted into
the college’s chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International,
and was one of thirty-six Hope College juniors inducted
into Mortar Board, a national honor society that recogniz-
es students for scholarship, leadership and service.

shoots, and more.
Gale Nobes of Muskegon received top honors for his
photo “The Frost Giant’s Grin”. Brian Kainulainen, of
Scottville, had his piece “Bone Falles” chosen as the second

and his photo “Tuscan Cheese Shop”.
This year’s honorable mention awards went to James
Churchill of Grant for “The Trilogy”, Larry Gouine of
Newaygo for “One of the Creators Helpers” and Richard
Hinton of Fremont for his photo “Empty”.
This interesting exhibit is a must-see and everyone is
encouraged to stop in and take a stroll around the many
photographs on display through June 5. NCCA-Artsplace

Zellie’s Opry House welcomes Celtic band

It’s believed that the beginnings of bluegrass
music can be found in the “ancient tones” of
Celtic music from Ireland and Scotland. With
that thought, Zellie’s Opry House is delighted to
present An Dro, one of Michigan’s finest Celtic
bands on Saturday, May 22, 2010, at 7:00 p.m.
At an An Dro performance you’ll hear tradi-
tional Irish melodies, French songs, dance tunes,
and Appalachian influences, all injected with an
improvisational flair and jam-band feel.
An Dro is made up of members Michele Ven-
egas (formerly of the Celtic Band Fonn Mor),
James Spalink (formerly of the Celtic Band Puck
Faire), Fred Willson (formerly with the Celtic
Band Amadaun) and Eddie Eicher (currently
with the R&B horn band, Hip Pocket.) They
bring together a diversity of influences and con-
siderable skill and perform on a wild array of
acoustic instruments that include, fiddle, guitar,
mandolin, bouzouki, Celtic harp, hurdy-gurdy,
doumbek, and African talking drum.
An Dro released their first recording project,
The Turn, in May, 2009. The CD includes dy-
namic arrangements of dance music from sever-
al traditions along with Celtic songs and an orig-
