SEPTEMBER 2012

INTRODUCTION
Overview
This document provides a description of Alcatel-Lucent 9361 Home Cell V2 (Home Cell in the
rest of the document) generic variant with W-CDMA 2100MHz operating frequency band. It
does not cover the variant with specific listening capabilities in 2G (1900/850
MHz) and in 3G (2100/850 MHz) which is introduced in another Product
Description document. The Product Description provides the characteristics of the Home
Cell unit and its key benefits and operational capabilities. The Home Cell product will be
introduced first with releases BCR 2.2, BCR 2.4 and BCR 3.0.
Alcatel-Lucent reserves the right to change the technical specifications without notice until
General Availability of the product.

1.2

Scope of this Document

The Product Description mentions the Home Cell functions but cannot be considered as a
detailed feature list or a Plan of Record (PoR). This information is provided in dedicated
documents on a per software release basis (e.g. Feature Planning Guide for Small Cell
solution, please refer to [1], [2], [3] and [4] in 4.1 Appendix A: Related Reading).
For more general information concerning 9360 Small Cell Solution, refer to [5].
The OAM solution for the Home Cell is described in a dedicated document [6] Small Cell
Management System.
Many of the terms used in this document refer to definitions of the 3GPP standards. Whenever
an Alcatel-Lucent specific term is used, it is explicitly elaborated.
The Home Cell Product Description is updated regularly under change control.
Information in this document is subject to change without notice and does not represent a
commitment on the part of the vendor or its representatives. No part of this document may be

SMALL CELL FOR THE HOME

Overview
The Home Cell is a small in-home unit that collapses the traditional 3G Node B and RNC
functions. It can accommodate 4 channels able to connect up to 4 devices. Each connection
can support a simultaneous voice and data session. The traffic is backhauled through the
standard IP network.
Small Cell Access Points, 9366 Small Cell Gateway and Small Cell Management System are
included in the Small Cell solution that allows a highly scalable interconnection to the existing
UMTS network over the existing standardized 3GPP interfaces. The Home Cell offers legacy
support for Circuit Switched Voice and UMTS Packet Data with standard 3G handsets.
The solution has been designed for an effective plug & play end-user installation.

2.2

Small Cell solution architecture

The high level system architecture for small cells as defined by 3GPP is depicted in the
diagram in Figure 1.

The 9360 Small Cell solution uses 3GPP interfaces to connect to the existing mobile core
network nodes while offering 3GPP compliant air interface. The backhaul connection from the
Access Point is IP and an IPsec Tunnel is used to guarantee a secure link. Furthermore, an Iu
interface is supported between the Access Point and the 9366 Small Cells Gateway (which
includes the 9365 BSR Gateway) from BCR 3.0.
The architecture integrates seamlessly into the operator's existing 3GPP network, including the
3G MSC, SGSN and therefore existing Applications, Portals, Services through standard Iu-CS
and Iu-PS interfaces. For more information on the Architecture of the solution please refer to
[7].

2.3

Benefits
The Home Cell provides new sources of revenue from new home applications enabled by the
enhanced indoor coverage and home networking possibilities.
The Home Cell allows the operator to propose bundled offers and include an entire family or
group into a single agreement. This leads to reduce churn and to allow higher revenue per
user.
The mobile consumers will be able to do voice and bandwidth hungry applications at a
competitive price and also experience enriched services that stick to consumer real time usage
patterns: user generated contents, social networking, gaming, location based services, remote
monitoring and control of consumer domestic appliances

2.4

Alcatel-Lucent Home Cell

The Home Cell is the most compelling solution to address the fixed mobile convergence
market and win the battle for the home traffic. The Home Cell provides high quality 3G service
at home. It is designed to be plug-and-play and connect to a standard 3G core with minimum
impact on the current macro network.
With a fully 3GPP compliant implementation, Alcatel-Lucent 9361 Home Cell allows the
consumer to use the wide range of available 3G devices and applications at home, at lower
call costs (depending on the operator strategy) and with higher data rates.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Alcatel-Lucent 9361 Home Cell V2 is the residential small cell unit. It has sophisticated capabilities
developed by Bell Labs to ensure plug and play installation.
The Home Cell has several unique capabilities:
It supports up to 4 users for simultaneous voice and data sessions
20 mW maximum output transmit power
It uses an Ethernet connection for backhaul and offer a 2nd Ethernet port for connection to any
external device
It is capable to support a 14,4 Mbit/s HSDPA radio bearer and, from BCR 3.0, a 5.7 Mbit/s
HSUPA radio bearer

3.1

Main Characteristics
3.1.1

Enclosure

The standalone Home Cell is housed in an Alcatel-Lucent generic enclosure with an external
AC/DC adapter as presented in the figure below.

Figure 2: Home Cell generic enclosure (front view)

The generic Standalone Home Cell can be customised according to the customers
specifications. This includes the following possibilities:
The strip colour, logo, packaging and user guide can be customised as per the operators
request within a certain order quantity
Authentication options, such as crypto-memory or digital certificate
The housing of the Home Cell is a plastic case with a removable stand. The Home cell was
designed to stand in a vertical position. However, it is also easy to hang it on a wall. Just
remove the stand from the bottom and affix it to the slots on the back.

Table 4: Frequency bands

3G Network Listening
The 3G Network Listening feature allows the Home Cell to act as a UE and receive
transmission from neighboring base stations. The feature also allows the Home Cell to
automatically identify, measure and record its neighbor UMTS cells, eliminating the need for
operator provisioned neighbor cell lists. This information is used by the Home Cell to
automatically select its primary scrambling code and power levels to transmit and to create
and update a list of UMTS neighbor cells. This neighbor cell list is used by the Home Cell,
when in base station mode, for identification of the target cell for UMTS handover and for
rebroadcasting of the system information messages, in support of reselection by the UE.
2G Network Listening
The Home Cell supports a GSM receiver chain and can therefore receive the signal transmitted
by the 2G Macro network. The Home Cell can search for and sync to a macro base station,
and then decode the BCCH channel. It can then retrieve the relevant information to build and
maintain 2G neighbor lists and target cells for IRAT handover and later, when in base station
mode, to broadcast to the UE for cell reselection. Measurements and information are provided
by the network listening feature to the auto-configuration and self-optimization functions.

3.1.4

Antenna

The Home Cell has an integrated 2G/3G omnidirectional antenna with -2dBi gain.
3.1.5

Transmission Power

The Home Cell supports a maximum transmission power of 20mW (13dBm).

3.1.6

Radio Parameters

The Home Cell is designed according to the following parameters in 3GPP TS 25.104
specifications.

The MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is calculated based on Telcordia SR-332 Issue 2,
September 2006. The MTBF of the Home Cell excluding the power supply at 25C is 1051K
hours.
3.1.9

Security

The Home Cell supports an optional secure device for the authentication of the Access Point: a
secure memory can be used to authenticate and store sensitive data in the Access Point (shared
secret for authentication). From BCR 3.0, the Home Cell can also support digital certificate
instead of this mechanism. However, once the authentication method is configured in the
product (either shared secret or digital certificate) then there is no way to change it anymore.

LED Indicators

On the front side of the Home Cell there are 3 LEDs and one optional that provide the following
