Somechildrenwhodidnotinitiallydiscloseabuseareafraidorashamedtotellwhen

carefullyinvestigated.Also,physicalproblemsassociatedwithanxiety,suchaschronic
stomachpainorheadaches,mayoccur.
Emotionalorbehavioralsignalsaremorecommon.Thesecanrunfrom"tooperfect"
behavior,towithdrawalanddepression,tounexplainedangerandrebellion.
Sexualbehaviorandlanguagethatarenotageappropriatecanbearedflag.
Beawarethatinsomechildrentherearenosignswhatsoever.

Don'toverreact.Justasyoustaycalmwhenyourchildbreaksanarm

andfollowaplanifyourchildreportsabuse.
Ifyoureactwithangerordisbelief,theresponsefromthechildmaybethe

Thechildchangeshisstoryinthefaceofyourangeranddisbelief,when,infact,
abusemayactuallybeoccurring.
Thechildchangeshisaccountaroundyourquestionssofuturetellingsappeartobe
"coached."Thiscanbeveryharmfulifthecasegoestocourt.
Thechildfeelsevenmoreguilty.

Reportinallcasesofsuspectedabuse,whetherinsideoroutsidethefamily.The
child'ssafetyismuchmoreimportantthananyemotionalconflictyoumayhaveto
face.Remember:youaretheadult.
Don'tpanic.Sexuallyabusedchildrenwhoreceivepsychologicalhelpcananddoheal.
