According to the Red Cross, a single donation can save the lives of up to three people.
It means that by donating our blood, we have been meaningful for others. When we donate
our blood, it will not only be beneficial for others, but also advantageous for our health. Now,
lets see the benefits.
First, our blood may flow better. Repeated blood donations may help the blood flow
in a way taht is less damaging to the lining of the blood vessels and could result in fewer
arterial blockages. That may explain why the American Journal Of Epidemiology found that
blood donors are 88% les likely to suffer a heart attack.
Second, well get a mini check-up. Before we give blood, well first have to complete
a quick physical test that measyres our temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin
levels. After our blood is collected, its sent off to a lab where it will undergo 13 different
tests for infectous diseases, like HIV and West Nile virus. If anything comes back positive,
we should not donor our blood.
Then, our iron levels eill stay balanced. Healthy adults usually have about 5
grams of iron in their bodies, mostly in red blood cells but also in bone marrow. When we
donate a unit of blood, we lose about a quarter of a gram of iron, which gets replenished from
the food we eat in the weeks after donation. This regulation of iron levels is a good thing,
because having too much iron could be bad news for our blood vessels.
Finally, we can live longer. Doing good for others is one way to enjoy a longer life. A
study in Health Psychology found that people who volunteered for altruistic reasons had a
significantly reduced risk of mortality four years later that those who volunteered themselves.

33. Why do are undergo tests for infectious diseases before donating our blood?

Today, the existence of animals in zoos creates controversies. On one hand, zoos are
needed, but on the other, it is called restrictions for animals. Thus, it becomes necessary to
study the pros and cons of zoos.

On the positive side, zoos appear to be safe havens for animals. In order to protect and
take care of endangered wild animals, they need to be captured and confined to secure places,
i.e.zoos. Moreover, captive breeding can help raise the number of endangered wild animals.
Besides, zoos are in fact, trying to make people aware of the environmental problems.
Zoon authorities place a greater emphasis on education and conservation than merely
recreation these days. Many school children visit zoos to learn more about endangered
species and the different ways to conserve them. They can study about different kinds of wild
animals without having to travel to far off places.
On the contrary, zoos have negative sides. Animals have their own, natural rights and
capturing them for any reason whatsoever is a breach of the same. Therefore, restricting their
movements by keeping them in the confines of a zoo is unnatural. Wild animals are, in a way
connected to their natural surroundings and this bond is broken when they are put into the
artificial settings of a zoo.
Then, for many of us, vitting a zoo amounts to nothing more than recreation. There
are only a few who visit zoos for education purposes. It is observed that visitors tend to abuse
animals by throwing objects at them; such kinds of careless and irresponsible beaviour by
visitors have negative effects on animals. In fact, such kind of abuse could also prove fatal.
In conclusion, the debate over whether zoos are good or bad is an endless one. There
is on doubt whatsoever that efforts need to be taken to study, protect and preserve animals.
However, care should be taken see that, in the process, animals suffer the least.

Ginkgo biloba or maidenhair trees have been widely planted as ornamental and
cultivated individuals exist around the world. The plants are native to China, but today are
popular in towns worldwire and even farmed in plantations for their medicinal properties.
The trees reach up to 40m in height and older ones tend to have a more spreading
appearance with irregular branches. The deeply fissured brown bark may appear cork-like in
older trees.
The greenish-yellow leaves are fan-shaped and composed of two or more distinct
lobes; the Latin species name biloba refers to this fact. The common name of the maidenhair
tree pertains to the similarity of the leaves to those of maidenhair ferns (Adiantum species). In
autumn, the leaves of Ginkgo biloba turn a beautiful golden hue before falling to the ground.
It takes 20-35 years for maidenhair trees to reach maturity and start bearing seeds.
Male and female trees are separate; male trees have pollen-producing catkins, while female
trees, once fertilised, bear rounded, yellowish seeds with a fleshy outer coat (resembling a
plum in appearance). These fall to the ground in the autumn and as the seed coat decays, it
exudes a rancing butter-like smell.
Ginkgo biloba has been used for many functions. In China, it is used as traditional
medicine for centuries. Today, it is also cultivated for use in Western medicine. The leaves are
used in herbal remedies for cognitive complaints, such as Alzheimers disease, dementia and
