Title : Charily Run 2013
SMK Bukit Tinggi annual Charity Run for 2013 was held on 18th September. The event was originally
scheduled to start at 6.30 a.m. but the flag-off only took place at 7 a.m. due to the rain. Like the past
years, the run started and ended at the school field.
The purpose of this year's Charity Run is to raise funds for the local orphanage. Participants were
charged a RM15 registration fee that includes some mineral water and a t-shirt.
The entire route of the run was 10.5 kilometres. A total of 578 students throughout the school took part in
the event. Nur Amalina from Form 5B came out first, followed by Boon Keat from 5A, second and Ganesh
Lingam from 4D, third. The winners were presented with medals and hampers by the President of the
Parent Teacher Association, Datuk Rahim Mahmud.
While the event was successfully completed, there were some incidents that occurred during the run. Two
participants lost their belongings. Both of them left their bags at the side of the field despite being
repeatedly reminded by the organisers not to do so. Participants were advised to leave their belongings in
the hall next to the field where there were students on duty. Fortunately, they only lost small amounts of
money and some snacks.
Apart from that, some participants also sustained minor injuries. This was due to the fact that they did not
do warm-up exercise before running. As a result, they suffered cramps halfway through the run. They
were immediately attended to by the medical team on standby and recovered after a short rest.
From this year's event, it is clear that there are still room for improvement in the organisation of this event.
For example, more refreshment stands should be made available throughout the course of the run. This
will ensure that participants are well hydrated while running. Besides, more volunteers should be brought
in to control and direct traffic where the route meets with the main street. This will ensure the safety of the
participants as well as the safety of road users passing by the area.

How Internet Affects Life
By:Nurul Farhani
Nowadays, the use of Internet is increasing especially among adolescence or more accurately,
students. The Internet issue is discussed by the adults and parents. Most of them are worried that the use
of Internet is dangerous to their kids. Some others said that Internet may bring benefits to their children
especially to those who will be sitting for an examination.
On my opinion, Internet has both benefits and drawbacks. First of all, let me talk about the benefits
first. As we know, Internet is mostly used by students. By surfing internet, students can visit various
websites to assist their studies. The examples of popular websites are tutortv.com , unicliq.com , and
tutor.com.my. They can visit the websites and revise their studies in more exciting way. Some of them are
free. Students can visit it anytime they want. The websites also provide useful notes and exercises. At the
same time, students can get additional information that they cannot find it in books. For instance, they can
go to 'Google' or 'Yahoo' search engines to search for more ideas to write an essay. In short, Internet
provides vast informations and knowledge which is very beneficial for the students.
Next, Internet also provides lots of social networks such as Facebook , Twitter, MySpace and many
other. Through these social networks, we can add more friends and make new friends. We can also know
friends from other country as these social networks are used internationally. Other than adding friends, we
can also strengthen our relationship with our friends and family who are staying far away from us using
Skype. We can see them in front of our eyes eventhough they are actually far away from us through web
camera.
Besides, Internet also offers entertainment. We canwatch videos of our favourite artists by just one
click through 'Youtube' website. We can also watch favourite movies without paying. Plus, there are many
artists born from 'Youtube'. So, fans can know more about the artists from Youtube. Meanwhile,
4shared.com provides tracks, videos and files that can be downloaded for free! Internet users can enjoy
themselves at anytime watching their favourite artists' performance for free.
Internet doen not only offersbenefits for students but also to those who want to gain more money. It
also provides business opportunities. As for example, mudah.my gives a wide room for surfers to promote
anything they want to sell. Through this, people with no job can gain money and support their lives by
doing the online business. However, as I said earlier, Internet also brings bad effects to its users. Firstly, it
can encourage cyber crimes. Besides that, students who spend too much time on Internet may neglect
their studies and do not finish their homework. This should be avoided as studies are important especially
to teenagers.
Although Internet can add more friends to our list, yet, it still can develop anti-social behaviour. Not
all of the users use Internet to make friends, someof them only play video games or just sit down
wayching videos on Youtube. They will only sit and ignore what is happening around them. The worst
thing is, they may not realise that there is an earthquake out there! This anti-social behaviour may leads
to health problems. The users will just stay at home and sit in front of computer and this will cause them
to be lazy couch potatoes. It will also lead to obesity. Next, most students will not attracted to surf
knowledgeable websites, but wasting their time on other non-beneficial things. Wasting timeon Internet
can cause students to neglect their studies. Not only time is wasted but also money. With the uses of

more electricity non-stop, utility bills may increase dramatically. We just not pay for the electric bills but
also internet monthly bills.
The conclusion is, everything has its own benefits and drawbacks. However, it depends on how we
are using it. If we spend more time using it for benefits, we will get positive effects. But if we use it more to
non-beneficial things, we will get negative effects. So, it depends on you.

3.Speech
A very good morning to our beloved principal, Pn Laila Mohd Noor, senior assistants,
teachers and friends. On this glorious morning, I, Gary Tan the recipient of this years Best
Student Award am going to give a talk on How to Become a Successful Student. In my
speech, I am going to share with you some tips on how you can be a successful student. If you
want to be successful, you must set goals. Research shows that people who set goals
accomplish more than those who do not. In deciding your goals, ask yourself What do I want to
be? and What do I do to get there? Besides, you must be motivated. When you are motivated
you will have a strong desire to do well and to achieve your goals. In addition, you must pay
attention in class.
Dear students ,
Listen actively and focus on what the teacher is teaching. If you have disruptive classmates,
sit in front of the classroom, away from them. Always ask questions if you do not understand.
Seek clarifications from your teachers or your friends if you are shy to approach the
former.Another important tip to being a successful student is to be organised. You can use a
planner or notebook to write down all your assignments when they are given. This way you will
not forget your homework, dates of tests or projects. Remember, if you are organised you will be
well- prepared and you will have less stress. Moreover, you must complete your homework on
time. Homework helps reinforce what you have learnt. It helps you understand and remember
the information. You must prepare well for exams. A successful student is one who prepares for
exams well in advance, and not at the eleventh hour. If you study consistently, you will have
ample time for revision.Friends, to be a successful student you must have diverse interests. You
should take part in co-curricular activities in order to become a well-rounded person. These
activities help develop leadership skills and teamwork besides instilling values like cooperation
and tolerance. Discipline is an important aspect of our lives. No matter where you go or what
you do, you will be subjected to rules and regulations. Hence, it is crucial that you obey the
school rules.
Dear friends,
What is success if you lack the common courtesies in life? Remember, you must respect
everyone. You must respect your parents, your teachers, the school staff and also your friends.
You must respect other peoples feelings and opinions. There are also several things you must
avoid if you want to be a successful student. You must avoid wasting time. These days many
teenagers spend hours on social networks such as Facebook or playing computer games.
These are a waste of time and will not benefit you in any way. Remember, Time and tide wait
for no man. Also, avoid skipping school. Some students feel that school is a waste of time as
they can learn better from their tuition teachers. This is not true. The teachers in our school are
experienced and well qualified. They are also experienced examiners and they know how to
impart knowledge effectively.I have to stop here. I hope you have found my talk helpful. Thank
you for listening attentively.

4.Formal & Informal Letter

Nurul Farhani bt. Roslee,

Taman Selasih,

Selangor.

The Director,
Ampang Jaya Municipal Council,
Bangunan Mentari,
Ampang Jaya,
68000
SELANGOR.
15 SEPTEMBER 2014
Dear Sir,
Poor Maintenance of Taman Selasih
I am writing this letter on behalf of the residents of Taman Selasih to complain about the dismal conditions
we have been putting up with for the past three months.
2. One of the main grouses of the residents concerns uncollected rubbish. Initially, rubbish was collected
three times a week. However, since June this year the garbage collectors have only been coming once a
week. Our litter bins are always filled to the brim and we have no choice but to leave our bags of rubbish
next to the bins. The rotting waste causes a terrible stench. Worse still, stray cats and dogs scatter the
rubbish while looking for food. This is not only unpleasant but also unhealthy.
3. Most of the drains in Taman Selasih are clogged with rubbish resulting in the water becoming stagnant.
It is not uncommon to see plastic bags, bottles and dry leaves in these drains. There is an urgent need to
clear these drains as the stagnant water is an idealbreeding ground for mosquitoes. The residents are
worried as there has been a sharp increase in dengue cases in the last two months.
4. The street lights along several roads are also not working. This has caused several accidents at night
mostly involving motorcyclists as they are unable to see in the dark. Unfortunately, the dark streets have
also led to another problem an increase in crime. Several residents, especially women, have fallen victim
to snatch thieves.
5. The one and only playground in our area is also not well-maintained. The grass is overgrown as it has
not been cut for almost three months. Besides, the playground equipment is damaged. Many of the seesaws and swings have been spoiled by vandals.
I hope the council will look into our complaints and take prompt action to solve our problems.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,

(NURUL FARHANI BT. ROSLEE)

Dear Zarina,
How's life? I hope you are in the best of health. How's my beloved Uncle Johari? I miss him too.The
reason I write this letter is to tell you about my expedition to Langkawi. Guess what? We just came back
from Langkawi . I went there with 25 of my classmates and my class teacher. Mr, Zaid had kindlly
accompanied us for the 3 day-trip. You should have joined us. It was such an awesome experience!
Well, on the first day, we arrived at Langkawi in morning after a short flight. Then, we were taken to
Langkawi Geopark, a UNESCO World Heriatage Site where we could see magnificent rock formations.
We were taught the history of the place and some fossils of fish could also be sighted. This is a wonderful
opportunity to understand geogical aspect of the island at the Geopark.
After visiting Geopark, we were taken to Pulau Dayang Bunting which about an hour boat ride. I
forgot to mention that the boat ride itself was so exciting and adventurous. Upon arrival at the island, we
were greeted by monkeys and soon, we saw a breathtakinng lake, with its gree clear water. Not forgetting
the fish spa where thousands of catfish nibble at your feet when you lower feet into the water. Again, this
is a new experience for me. Other than that, we could really enjoy the beautiful scenery of the island.
The next day, we went to Underwater World where we saw the penguin, giant fishes, colourful
onemones and all sorts of marine life there.I'm sure, it's heaven for fish lovers. One advantage of this trip
is I could learn about themarine life. Well, on the final day, we went to Mahsuri Tomb and Padang Mat
Sirat to relive the legend of Mahsuri. It was a good experience since I managed to see the historic sites
and understand Mahsuri legend better. Other than that, I also learn about the importance of being true to
our words and do not spread false gossips since these can lead to horrible consequences. I also
managed to make friends with some other tourists visiting the site.
Okay, I guess I have to have to pen off now. Hope to see you in the next letter. Please convey my
love and regards to my uncle and aunti. Take care!

Students Grow Flying Sauce
Jim Wilkes, Science Reporter

TORONTO - In the cult movie classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, mutant
vegetables cut a deadly swath through the community, consuming everyone in their
path.
But Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk says Toronto students cultivating tomato
seeds from space shouldnt worry about like imitating art.
There should be no fear on the part of teachers or parents about any toxic fruit
growing from these tomato plants, said Thirsk, who flew aboard the shuttle
Columbia on a 17-day mission in 1996.
He said hell eat tomatoes produced from the high-flying seeds or use them to
make salsa or ketchup.
Thirsk visited students at St. Cecillia Catholic School on Annette St. yesterday
to check up on their experiments with tomato seeds taken into space by astronaut
Mark Garneau.
The Tomatosphere project involves 2,500 secondary school classrooms across
Canada growing 400,000 seeds, half of which made the trip to space. Space plants
are said to grow faster and taller.
The space-flown seeds made 170 orbits of the Earth, travelled more than 7
million kilometers and spent 12 days weightless, Thirsk said.
At the end of June, schools will send results of their experiment to the Canadian
Space Agency which will compile the date and make conclusions.

Thirsk said the program is designed to introduce space science to young

Canadians. I can see that in these classrooms we have potential future Canadian
scientists and astronauts, he said. I find that incredibly exciting.
