Town council entertained the idea of paving the

road to allow for speeds lower than 50 km an hour
to exist in Strathmores residential areas in the future, with a unanimous vote to review the traffic bylaw and develop a policy based on the Canadian
Guidelines for establishing posted speed limits last
week.
The decision followed a proposal by the traffic advisory committee to reduce municipal speed limits
from 50 km an hour to 40 km an hour on residential
roads dependent on specific residential components
such as traffic volume, parked vehicles, and road
width.
A speed limit is exactly that, its a limit not a target, but unfortunately there are some people on the
road that see it as a target, said Martin Wiseman,
member of the Traffic Advisory Board. I think this
is an awesome opportunity for Strathmore to be
proactive before someone gets killed down Centre
Street for example. By reducing the speed limit its
got to have a positive impact on road safety. Its got
to have a positive impact on insuring the safety of
pedestrians; children.
Understanding possible defiance by drivers when
lowering the speed limit by too high of a reduction
and acknowledging the possibility of observing a
greater success rate when communicating the reasoning behind the change in speed limits, the board
proposed surveying residents living on those roads
considered and thus providing a sense of engagement.
All five council members in attendance, with the
absence of Mayor Michael Ell and Councillor Denise
Peterson, spoke in favour of the reduction to 40 km
an hour on certain residential roads, specifically singling out Centre Street.
Centre Street is one of the busiest if not the most
dangerous street in this town and I refuse to use
it myself, said Councillor Rocky Blokland. To me
thats just an accident waiting to happen at some
point. I really believe were not going down far
enough with this, it should go down to 30. Ive driven through lots of town and there are speed limits
all over the place and you just have to pay attention
and watch the signs and follow the speed limits.
Councillor Steve Grajczyk was also recognized
that saving lives takes priority but was concerned
with the cost of replacing and installing new speed
signs. Council also discussed the possibility of introducing a blanket 40-km-an-hour zone for all residential areas, but research proved the approach had not
always been successful in areas across the province.

Lets REC the Streets

The first Annual REC the Streets event kicked off on June 1. The first week had participants partaking in free exercise classes such as Hatha Yoga, Zumba Gold, Senior Aquacise, Stretching and
toning and some disc golf. Many of these events were held downtown on 2nd Avenue.

CRIR silent on returning funds

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The Town of Strathmore is
being left in the dark about
the fate of thousands of dollars in sponsorship for advertising to the Canadian
Rockies International Rodeo
(CRIC), after the cancellation
of the 2016 music festival
and rodeo.
The organization released
a statement over two weeks
ago announcing a decision to
no longer forge ahead with
Canadas largest gay rodeo

and the anticipated Canada

Day music festival, which
wouldve featured acclaimed
artists such as Terri Clark,
the Road Hammers, and Kim
Mitchell.
While the announcement
left the community and its local politicians baffled a decision they were told proved
a direct result of the Fort McMurray fires and low ticket
sales CRIR remained reticent thus far on $10,000 the
town awarded the organization in January to go towards
advertising at the event.

Our goal is to hopefully

get the money back and use
it for other community festivals or other groups looking
for sponsorship but at this
point we have no information, said Tracy Simpson,
community services coordinator with the Town of
Strathmore.
All weve been told is that
the board is coming up with
a plan and once they have a
plan they would be letting us
know. Unfortunately weve
had very little communication.

The event wouldve featured more than 12 wellknown artists, a 13-event rodeo, a barbeque, food trucks,
and beer and wine vendors.
This year wouldve marked
the festivals 23rd anniversary and seventh year in Strathmore.
The Alberta Rockies Gay
Rodeo Association (ARGRA),
who hosted the event last
year, and CRIR were unavailable for comment. Council
requested for the issue to be
brought back for the June 15
regular council meeting.

A renovation may affect the value of

your home or the liability issues.
Anything that changes the structure
or use of the property can
change your policy.
Many house improvements that boost
your homes value could leave your home
coverage inadequate. Other upgrades
may actually lower your premium
- savings you dont want to miss.
Upgrades include but are not limited to:
roof, plumbing, hot water tank,
furnace, electrical, additions,
basement development
When making improvements to your house, its a
good time to have an insurance conversation.

Canadians are living longer but doctors who

specialize in the care of the elderly, geriatricians,
make up only 1% of all the doctors in Canada. If
any readers are considering medicine as a career,
think of geriatrics as a specialty.
We often mention the benefits of regular exercise
to our health. We talk about walking, swimming,
exercise circuits etc. But one activity that can
be really really helpful to prevent heart disease
dancing. Its a good mix of aerobic exercise and
social interaction. Youve got to break a sweat,
though. Salsa anyone?
As the weather warms up, its good to review
what to do if a person has heat stroke caused by
the bodys overheating. Cooling the patient is
paramount. Move him to a cool place, remove as
much clothing as possible and sponge him down
with cool water. And call 911. If the heat stroke
is severe, it can cause brain injury and death. Its
an emergency situation so quick action is a must.
With the possibility of changes in the marijuana
laws in Canada, it bears mentioning that use of
alcohol and marijuana together impairs driving
more than either substance alone.

fundraises

MIRIAM OSTERMANN

The Strathmore Overnight Shelter
(SOS) is letting their creative juices
flow in organizing an entertaining and
mouth-watering chili cook-off fundraiser, with ambitions of raising thousands of dollars towards a required
sprinkler system to bring their project
to fruition.
Organizers aim to receive participation from 50 local residents and 25
businesses, who would contribute chili
to be judged and voted on during the
shelters first Rootin Tootin Outhouse
in the Park fundraiser. With a goal of
raising $5,000 at the event on Canada
Day, the shelter is inching closer to
meet the remaining $20,000 necessary
for the installation of a sprinkler system; imperative to meet Strathmores
building codes for combining a church
the harvest Healing Centre Church
and an overnight shelter under the
same roof.
We have to have some fundraisers
for that sprinkler system and with
the shelter I think people dont know
exactly what it is still, said Richard
Rodgers, director of outreach for SOS.
People are sick of the same old
thing, sick of the run for this, the run
for that, silent auctions, and dinners.
The Strathmore Overnight Shelter

wants to fundraise outside of the box.

Rodgers has spent the last week canvassing the area and inform the public about
the event while encouraging participation.
While the feedback has been positive, the
organizers continue to look for greater participation. Registering in the event requires
cooking at least 4 litres of chili, supplying
your own tureen and heating source, and
two individuals to help serve up the chili
sample sizes on Canada Day.
Residents participating will have their
chili voted on by the public in hopes of taking home the trophy a cowboy sitting on
a toilet. The fundraiser will also provide information and clarity on the shelter project,
its purpose, and the need for financial help.
Its really up to the town how well it turns
out, Rodgers said. Its a type of learning
curve. We have to try one fundraiser and if
it doesnt work out then we have to think of
something that works out better.
The Rootin Tootin Outhouse in the Park
fundraiser will take place on Canada Day in
Kinsmen Park at 11:30 a.m. Contestants are
asked to set up at 11 a.m. Registering in the
cook-off is free and to vote and sample the
chili costs $3. For more information or to
participate contact Richard Rodgers at 403836-8745.

Road safety

Presented by The Newsy Neighbour Magazine as part of

the DOWNTOWN STRATHMORE Revitalization Project

Continued from Page 1

Although no changes were made to
speed zones in Strathmores residential
areas, council voted to review the traffic
bylaw to allow for speeds lower than 50
km an hour in those areas, and develop
a policy allowing for analysis for roads to
be identified for a reduction speed of 40
km per hour.
As a community were doing not bad
in this area in regards to collisions, said
Councillor Bob Sobol. Theres on average for the last five years, theres 2.5
pedestrian collisions a year, which is 2.5
too many. But I think we have to credit
the motorists who do pay attention to
the speed limits and the vast majority
of people do that, but unfortunately not
everyone does. I think the committees
main goal is to slow things down in high
traffic areas and make it just a little bit
more safe.

The Rockyford club took part in the Peavey Mart
Customer Appreciation day on April 9 in Strathmore. We cooked and served food and we were
able to make enough profits from that barbeque
that we donated $300 to the Wheatland Food Bank
in Strathmore.
On April 30, we took our cheque to the food
bank and then we participated in a club tour of the
Animal Care Center just outside of Strathmore. A
big thanks goes to Jodi Koester and her staff who
were amazing tour guides. This Animal Care Center opened in March 2007 and is a mixed animal
veterinary practice. Everyone enjoyed this tour and
hopes to return next year.
Our District Heifer show was held on May 6
at the Calgary Stockyards in Strathmore and the
Rockyford members did well. Congratulations our
Heifer members. The following are their results

The ditches in Alberta should look a lot cleaner
due to clubs from all over Alberta participating in
highway cleanup. We began at 9 a.m. on March 14
and because of all the help from parents and our
club members, we were able to get it all done by
11 a.m.
We held our monthly meeting after the cleanup
and planned our Mini Show which is to take place
at Dusty and Dawn Kalbhens on June 2. This is
a great time for club members to practice with
their calves and work on their showmanship and
grooming. Hopefully the weather holds up.
Our West Wheatland Show and Sale will be at 10
a.m. and 2 p.m. in Rockyford at the arena. Hope to
see you all there.

WE NEED OUR VOLUNTEERS TO KEEP US GOING!!! IF YOU ARE INTERESTED

Multi-award nominated Tent Meeting

returns to Rosebud
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Tent Meeting, a musical play,
will open in Rosebuds Opera
House, June 24. The show has
received four nominations for
Best Musical and Best Production. Morris Ertman, Rosebud
Theatres Artistic Director, who
co-wrote the musical and is also
directing this production, has
also won and been nominated
for numerous awards. The most
recent are the 2016 Critter Award
nominations for Best Director
and Best Production for both
Wizard of Oz and Outside Mullingar at Rosebud Theatre.
This is Tent Meetings third
time in Rosebud, having toured
through the village in 2000 and
having been produced at Rosebud Theatre in 2007.
The show has entertained and
blessed people over and over
and over again, Ertman said. I
keep running into people who
say, Man, that show just grabbed
me. It was so great. And they remember it from 16 years ago or
10 years ago.
The story may be especial-

ly pertinent for the people of

southern Alberta this year, since
its set in hard economic times,
during an extended drought.
Its a story about what to do
when your life is falling apart ...
whether its drought or whether
its a Fort McMurray wildfire and
youve been driven from your
home. How do you not let bitterness get in the way? Ertman
said. Its about a husband and
wife who are estranged and todays the day of reckoning ...
and it happens to be around a
tent meeting. The story is a story
about a community that gathers around George and Dolly
and holds them up, even though
their marriage is failing.
And Tent Meeting points to a
brighter future.
The story is actually a very
true-to-life story about how we
grow apart from each other and
then how we can get that feeling back when we surrender to
love, Ertman said. Its so filled
with hope and its also filled with
the notion that divine and wonderful healing can happen. And
that we can come out the other
side of hard times more whole

than we were before.

Jonathan Bruce is returning to
Tent Meeting to play Sam.
Hes done the production virtually wherever Ive directed it,
Ertman said. He embodies the
character so beautifully. Hes got
a gorgeous tenor voice and he
smokes a stogie while singing.
Hes like Jackie Gleason with a
stogie. Hes just stunning.
Rosebuds own David Snider is
also returning to the show, as is
Seana Lee Wood, an actor from
Stratford and Toronto. Actors Declan OReilly and Blair Young of
Calgary complete the cast.
In tough challenging economic times, it will be good for the
people of Alberta to come to
the theatre and hear those glorious gospel harmonies, and to
participate in the joy of the music, and the emotional connection of the music, Ertman said.
That, in hard times, in and of
itself, is a wonderful thing to do.
Tent Meeting will play from
June 24 to Aug. 28. Matinee and
evening tickets both include a
meal. Purchase them from rosebudtheatre.com or 1-800-2677553.

Learning some manners

All about seniors

Seniors Week kicked off this week with numerous free programs including

To the Editor
It costs $0 to be a decent person; however, despite the cost it appears to be a
courtesy that is currently lacking in political arenas both provincially and federally.
Recent incidents in Ottawa with Prime
Minister Trudeau and in Edmonton with
Derek Fildebrandt provide examples of
inappropriate behaviour, especially from
individuals in leadership roles. Following
their respective incidents, both men were
Canadian politicians being profoundly Canadian apologizing with a repetitive sorry.
This is definitely nothing new. My earliest recollection of politicians behaving
poorly is of Nikata Krushchevs purported
shoe banging in the United Nations General Assembly in 1960. True or not, it has
claimed a place in history and in his memoires. My next memory is of attending a
parliamentary session in Ottawa with a
group of Strathmore students on the Eastern Canada trip in the 1990s. These teenagers were surprised at how the parliamentarians were behaving telling me Mrs.
(Denise) Peterson would never allow us to
act like that in class.
Im sure she isnt the only teacher or
parent with expectations and guidelines
on proper behaviour.
Versions of the Golden Rule are found in

dozens of religions and other

sources being taught globally.
The most familiar version of it
states, Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you.
Whether or not recent words
and actions are accepted political culture, it is important
that everyone in a leadership
role know people are watching
their behaviours and judging
them.
It is profitable to remember to treat others the way we
want to be treated and to talk

to others the way we want to

be talked to. Respect is earned,
not given.
Parents, teachers and coaches aid us in becoming the best
version of ourselves so that humanity benefits. If a problem
consistently appears and parents or teachers have not succeeded in helping overcome
poor behaviour, it might be a
good idea to hire a coach.
Respectfully submitted,

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Strathmore High has always tried to do things differently, and our principal has never shied away from
trying new things. For a few years, we tried Early Bird
PE for kids who had trouble fitting in PE classes into
their schedules.
Early Bird PE means classes start at 7:15 in the morning, and ended around 8:30 am. Then youd go off to
your regular classes, and you could finish your day by
about 2:15 p.m.
One would think that would be a pretty good gig,
but I was the guy who foolishly volunteered for that
class! Even though these high school kids signed up
for the class, how many do you think actually liked being active by 7:20ish not so many!
I tried all sorts of things to make it fun, and Im not
even a morning person myself! My class started in September, and by winter mornings, it was a tough sell.
A couple of really dark mornings, I had the brilliant idea to have them play hide & seek in the empty school. No one sane was at the school at 7:15 a.m.,
so the place was empty! Wed pick an it person, Id
go on the PA System to send off the kids to hide, and
the search was on. Little did I know that one morning,
two kids asked our head caretaker Tim, to let them into
a classroom to hide. You guessed it they hid in this
room, shut out the lights, and went to sleep! None of
us could find them they slept, and won the stupid
game!
Fast forward about 20 years and this same Tim is
working his butt off for the 2016 Grad. Hes logged
many overtime hours readying the school and grounds
for the big celebration. In fact, one of the last mornings, he worked until about 2:30 a.m., and was to start
his AM shift. A quick stop at Tims would help him
through the morning, he thought.
So, he stopped in the Drive Thru to place his coffee
order. However, on the third try, no one was taking his
order, so he began to yell! The vehicles behind him
were honking, and he was furious. It was then that
Tim realized he was ordering through the garbage can!
After getting his order, he sheepishly pulled into the
Canadian Tire lot, only to get more honks and the finger from another driver! Its amazing how early morn-

ing rage can take over people!

I have my own English student who gives me nightmares. Kaleigh is one of the nicest people you could
ever meet. Shes kind of like a Disney princess. Shes
cheerful and sweet all cotton candy clouds and unicorns. That is, unless you happen to meet her before
9 a.m.!
Its a little like Frozen meets The Shining Ive
actually heard her say: REDRUM REDRUM! (In case
you dont know, or have forgotten, spell that backward!).
I actually worry about her parents someone has
to wake her up for school! Im so glad I only get her
at school I mean, whats she going to do to me in
public? There are witnesses! So Ive come to walk
softly around Kaleigh in the morning classes! Ive actually told her that when she eventually gets engaged,
I need to meet her fianc I mean, someone has to
warn this person!
I do get it, though. no one ever wanted to wake my
young son Brennen, when he fell asleep in our van. I
dont want you to phone Child Welfare, but there were
times back then, we let him sleep a bit longer in the
van in the garage. Its not like he was going to freeze,
the vehicle was still warm, and it was always easier
to let him wake slowly! It was probably my fault. As
a new dad, I did the 2 a.m. feedings with him. It was
all so new, and I was an eager young dad! Id change
him, goof around with him, maybe watch a late night
show. then, I could never get him back to sleep! With
my daughter Breanne, it was totally different I had
learned my lesson! She got the bottle in the dark, got
changed in the dark, and I never said a word to her! I
was like a ninja in stealth mode. Its funny how times
change. Just a few short years ago, my kids werent
even getting in until about the time I used to do their
feedings! Maybe tonight, Ill take a walk down Memory laneI know, Ill text them at 2 a.m.!

New business introduces Cannabis hemp seed oil to Strathmore

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

When their 10.5-year-old
dog Peeties aggressive cancer prognosis took a turn
for the worse seven weeks
ago, pet owners Reesa and
Cameron Bruce exhausted
all options to prolong his
life; eventually even seeking
out advice on euthanasia
procedures. That was until
the couple stumbled across
Health Canada approved
Medical Marijuana Cannabis
Sativa Seed Oil products. In
Peeties case, within a day,
the Maltese Yorkies appetite
returned, he was chasing
the cats, jumped on the fur-

niture, and started sleeping

through the night. Astounded by its effect, the Wheatland County residents, their
parents and close friends
began using the hemp seed
oil themselves, ultimately
resulting in the creation of
Endeavour More Living
the only distributors of the
product in Strathmore and
area.
We were misinformed at
one point, we just assumed
medical marijuana meant
the drug form and this is a
morally comfortable option
for people who want medical marijuana but dont want
anything to do with the drug
side of it, said Reesa Bruce.

Farewell TO HUSSAR SCHOOL

- 1949-2016

Hussar School will close its doors at the end of June 2016 after being the
hub of the educational and social center of Hussar, Alberta for the past 67
years.

We started realizing there

are so many people that are
suffering with something
and sometimes its a physical condition, sometimes
its a mental condition, and
sometimes people just want
to be healthy. All it is, is the
pressed oil from the seeds
which is a super-food. All it
is, is a food substance.
The cannabis hemp seed
oil products are legally approved federally and by
Health Canada, and grown
by farmers in Health Canada
facilities. Containing 80 per
cent of essential fatty acids
omegas 3-6-9 and all eight
amino acids, and with only
trace amounts of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the
principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis, Health
Canada states the product
doesnt cause a high, addiction or lead to an overdose.
Furthermore, because its
a food source, there are no
known side effects or interference with other medications.
While the local distributors only launched their
business on May 7, the interest and feedback has been
overwhelming.
Its been way busier than
we expected, said Reesa
Bruce. Were having trouble
keeping the product in. We
kind of expected some controversy because of the word
marijuana, but weve had
nothing but love and support. The product itself has
been around for 15 years, so
its not like its brand new.

Reesa and Cameron Bruce became the only

distributors in the
Strathmore and
Wheatland County area to provide
Medical
Marijuana Cannabis
Sativa Seed Oil
products
with
their new business Endeavour
More Living.

Denny Tibeau

Were just only new to it because it really doesnt get a

lot of public attention. Its
starting to now.
Since providing the product locally, the couple has
been busy studying up on
the product, its health benefits, and spent any extra
time on their lunch breaks
and after work making deliveries around Strathmore
and the Wheatland County
area.
Although Reesa and Cameron Bruce recognize the
product wont act as a cure
for their dog and dont want
to cause false hope for the
public, the products have
been known to provide relief and may be beneficial to
those suffering from numerous illnesses including cancer, arthritis, diabetes, Celiac
disease, seizures, anxiety,
allergies, sleep issues, brain
function issues, and hormonal issues. As with any
health product, it is advised

that those suffering from medical conditions or are on prescription drugs

check with their doctor.
People we know that are taking numerous pills a day and theyre able to
cut back their pills dramatically, said
Cameron Bruce. If it can alleviate
some of your symptoms, all the better.
Its a healthy alternative to a lot of the
pharmaceuticals. We are just scratching the surface of this. Its not a big
town, but there are a lot of people with
a lot of issues and to make a change in
someones life, thats huge.
Endeavour More Living supplies

Lets get reading

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

Leah Elder and Carly Davidson are ready to bring
the joys of reading to local
children at the Strathmore
Municipal Library for the annual Summer Reading Program. The theme this year
is wild and the two coordinators have been hard at
work planning on how to
incorporate the theme into
each weeks activities while
inspiring the youths to read.
Come September they
will be the kids the teacher doesnt have to worry
about, said Elder.
They will be the leaders
in their class, they will be
strong readers, they will be
helping their friends and it
gives them an opportunity
to meet new people.
Once children are registered in similar age groups,
they will embark on four
weeks of games, crafts and
reading, all of which encompass the wild theme such as
wild weather, the wild west
and wild Canada. Each age
group will have the event
tailored to them and their
level of ability. The program
is offered to children aged
three years old to Grade 7.
For Davidson the aim of
the program is to help the
children who like to read
books grow, and instill a
love of reading in others.
I dont believe that anyone doesnt like to read they

just havent found the right

book yet, she said.
But that is our job and
we are going to find the
right book.
At the end of the program
the top readers and those
that have improved the most
will receive prizes, although
the coordinators are hoping
for some donations in order
to get bigger, more personalized prizes.
Both Elder and Davidson grew up with libraries
as an integral part of their
lives. Davidson, who is from
Strathmore, was part of the
reading program when she
was younger and spent most
of her school years lost in a
book. This is what has inspired her to get her Library
Information Tech diploma
after she finishes studying
English and Psychology.
While being a passionate
reader she has also worked
with children over the years.
Elder grew up in St. Albert
where she too participated
in reading programs. As
her mom is a librarian she
knows the ins and outs of
library etiquette. She is an
engineering student at the
Southern Alberta Institute of
Technology (SAIT) but she
has spent a lot of time helping children as part of the
girl guides.
Registration begins June
11 on the Strathmore Municipal Library website. Children must have their own
library card to register.

Saving the wetlands

ANDREA ROBERTS

Wetlands are a vital part of the ecosystem and help with a number of processes such as flood and drought prevention.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) understands the need for wetlands. The
group recently held their 34th Annual
Strathmore Dinner and Auction on June
4 at the Strathmore Civic Centre to continue to fund their restoration efforts.
So we are a conservation company,
said Warren Robb, conservation program specialist who is in charge of
parts of Wheatland County and Vulcan
County. We try to conserve the land so
it can stay as the native prairies. We try
to keep the land as it has always been
for wildlife and especially waterfowl.
Wetlands are important parts of the
ecosystem. While acting as habitats for
waterfowl, they also act as buffers for
floods and droughts, and provide a
water source for cattle. They help with
ground flow, contribute to the ground
water table and help filter contaminants, such as an excess of phosphorus,
out of the water before it travels into the
lakes and streams to form algae blooms.
In Canada up to 70 per cent of wetlands have been destroyed or degraded,
some due to having been drained for
agricultural use of the land. DUC works
alongside farmers to form a symbiotic
relationship allowing for continuing agricultural practices while protecting and
revitalizing wetland areas. An example
of this relationship is Shell Buffalo Hills
Conservation Ranch.
DUC bought the 6,000 acres of land in

2013; it is the organizations largest land

purchase to date. It is also ecologically
important because of the native prairie
habitat. The Shell Buffalo Hills conservation ranch is made up of two historical
ranches: the UM Ranch formed in 1904,
and the Buffalo Hills Ranch formed in
1911. In 1950 the ranches were merged
and became King Ranch, which would
continue until 2003 when it was again
merged with the Willard Ranch and
became known as Marsh Ranch. The
owner of the land at the time, Gordon
Marsh, decided to sell the land to DUC
in order to conserve it.
Since then the organization has
helped restore the wetlands that were
drained while allowing the wetlands
left on the land to thrive. The land is
leased out so that cattle can still graze
in the area. Farmers who do decide to
have their wetlands restored are compensated by the group.

Former Strathmore local Justin Silva was recently awarded the Alberta
Teachers Association William Aberhart
Gold Medal in Education upon graduating from the University of Lethbridge
on June 3.
The award is given to the student
who attains the highest general proficiency during the final two years of a
Bachelor of Education program.
A number of things inspired him to
go into education including numerous
previous teachers and a desire to carry
forward the inspiration to the next generation.
I always wanted to make a positive
impact on young peoples lives, said the
27-year-old Silva. I am very passionate
for science and math. I always really enjoyed those subjects and always really
wanted to inspire others students to be
successful in those areas.
He plans on returning to Strathmore
and bringing his teaching skills to the
new Wheatland Crossing School when
it opens in the fall, where he will teach
high school math and science.

The citation information that went

along with the award praised Silvas
hard work, calling him an exceptional
teacher who was able to teach physics,
chemistry and mathematics in fun and
engaging ways.
Justins work was exemplary, said
Sharon Pelech, an assistant professor
who taught Silva in his science methods course. His creativity and detail in
planning for providing students with
opportunities to experience science as
a process as opposed to a lot of times
science is typically presented as fact, so
Justin is able to connect some higher
science concepts to students everyday
lives.
Silva was surprised when the dean
contacted him to congratulate him on
the award, stating it was a combination of outstanding performance in the
practicums and academic excellence in
the classroom. Silva did three practicums during his years at the university.
His first practicum was in De Winton,
his second in Medicine Hat and the last
one in Taber.
After receiving the medal, Silva said
it was one of those moments that will
stay with him forever and will help motivate him to be a good teacher.
It is nice to have that medal now and
have the degrees framed, said Silva. I
guess it symbolizes the time to move
on to the next stage in life now it is a
little bittersweet in ways but it is great.

Taking care of our eyes

JAN ROSE
Times Contributor

All of us at the back of our eyes have
snitches who tell on us. And thank
goodness those blood vessels and capillaries do, for they give evidence of not
only eye problems but developing trouble in the body such as glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure and
diabetes long before symptoms appear.
Dr. Michelle Duke at FYI Doctors is a
strong proponent of comprehensive eye
exams for not only checking vision and
determining eye health but a forewarning of developing problems elsewhere
in the body.
A comprehensive eye exam is one
where we check your vision, we check
to see if you have a prescription, binocular vision, how well your eyes work
together, and a lot of health components. So much can be detected in an
eye exam. As an example, she cites
glaucoma as an example of how an eye
problem can escape notice that leads us
to believe our eyes are healthy.

IAN & DENISE MCCALLUM

AUCTION

WELL MAINTAINED
FARM MACHINERY &
EQUIPMENT DISPERSAL

MONDAY, JUNE 13 -

Glaucoma at first affects peripheral vision so must people

dont notice the effect, she explained. If left untreated the disease damages the optic nerve
with the potential to cause blindness. There isnt a remedy, only
temporary measures such as eye
drops that relieve the pressure
and surgery in some situations.
A lot of people think that eye
diseases such as glaucoma happen when youre older, Duke
explained. That isnt true. Ive
had young patients who despite
there not being a family history
develop the disease.
Another eye disease, macular degeneration, is age related
(AMD) but can be influenced by
other factors such as smoking
and being exposed to sunlight
for long periods during a persons life. The degeneration is of
two types: wet and dry. In the
former small blood vessels grow
underneath the macula destroying light sensitive cells in addition to leaking blood fluid into
the eye. In dry AMD, as in wet,

light sensitive cells break down.

Waste products build up in the
retina, forming small deposits that tend to increase in size.
Eventually, central vision begins
to deteriorate.
Although AMD is age related
it can be caused by bad habits
such as smoking and not taking
preventative measures such as
wearing sun glasses that block
ultra-violet radiation from the
sun, Judy pointed out. Nutritional supplements can assist eye
health although a proper balanced diet can achieve the same
result. Eat foods such as kale
and other dark green leafy vegetables. Pay particular attention
to orange coloured vegetables
like peppers and carrots. Omega
3 found in fish oils is also beneficial.
Duke recommends patients
having an eye exam ask the optometrist if it is comprehensive or
something simpler. Eyes should
be examined every two years for
those between the ages of 19 to
64, annually for patients over 64.

Strathmore dancer heads to nationals

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Members of the community are throwing their
support behind Strathmores 15-year-old Zack
Proudfoot, who secured himself a spot in the
Candance 2016 30th anniversary national finals
where he will compete against hundreds of other
dancers from across North America and among
other routines perform his award-winning musical theatre solo.
Proudfoot began dancing late in the game, at
age seven, after squirming in his seat watching
his younger sister have fun on stage. Following in
his older brothers footsteps who also danced
the up-and-comer trains 16 hours a week, perfecting contemporary, tap, ballet, hiphop, jazz,
and musical theatre techniques among his many
other dance classes. Then just over two weeks
ago, Proudfoot found himself the runner-up at an
elite Candance competition in Red Deer on May
22, when he received a high score of over 95 out
of 100, and awarding him a spot at the national
competition in Orlando, Fla. in early July an
honour no one in his family has received and
which comes attached with a $5,000 price-tag the
family and community is now fundraising for.
My first reaction was shock, then the first thing
I said when I got back to my group of friends
was, my mom is probably crying in the audience
right now; I wasnt wrong, said Proudfoot.
Im going to see incredibly amazing dancers
that will give me inspiration to shoot for that level of skill. Im 100 per cent going to work as hard
as I can to make sure that Im ready to go to that
competition.
Several thousand dancers across North America were selected to compete in the nationals,
where dancers are exposed to workshops and
routines mirroring the style of So You Think You
Can Dance.
While the family expects Proudfoot to compete
against roughly 200 athletes in his age group
he is competing in Mr. Teen the Strathmore
High School student will be able to perform a
hip hop routine, and his musical theatre routine,
for which he received numerous recognitions, including most entertaining, high score, outstand-

Zack Proudfoot will be heading to Orlando, Fla. at the end of

June to dance in the Candance 2016 30th anniversary national
finals. The 15-year-old will compete against hundreds of other
dancers in his age group.

ing musical theatre solo, and subsequently the

spot at nationals.
He was a slow starter, he was a late bloomer,
but he just hit a peak and I dont even think hes
close to his ceiling, said Christine Forner, Proudfoots mother.
Its the top of the top, the best of the best
that are going and its very hard to get into. Hes
done really well in musical theatre in the last
three years, which gave him so much more confidence.
As the family is now actively fundraising and
seeking sponsorships to cover travel, accommodation, and competition fees cost, Expressions
The Dance Company, has offered extra instruction and studio time, while Catch a Rising Star
Dance Festival has also sponsored the young
athlete. Members of the local dance studio have
also started to financially support Proudfoot and
some mothers are helping Forner plan a fundraising paint night event. So far the family has
raised just over $600.
For more information or to donate contact
Christine Forner at 403-899-8907. The Candance
2016 30th anniversary national finals will take
place from June 29 to July 4.

Times TIDBITS
Did You Know?
Thousands of years ago, the Ancient Romans named the month
after the goddess Juno, who was the patron of marriage and also responsible
for looking after the wellbeing of women.
The name June also comes from the Latin word juvenis,
which means young people.

It was an emotional day for seniors,
AgeCare Sagewood staff, and shop employees last week, as the Tuck Shop
members clocked their final hours before closing down the store that provided Strathmore seniors with additional
purchasing options for the past three
years.
May 31 officially marked the stores
closure, when owner Debbie Mitzner
decided not to renew the lease.
We are no longer able to have a
working relationship with AgeCare,
said Mitzner. Its not because we dont
like the seniors or we dont want to be
there. We were open seven days a week
for 365 days a year for three years. Staff
and residents are disappointed and
heartbroken.
The Tuck Shop offered residents living in the Strathmore seniors community the opportunity to purchase items

ranging from snacks to gifts to local

products. In a statement to the Strathmore Times, AgeCare recognized the
void left behind with the stores departure and is seeking other options for the
residents to enjoy the same luxuries.
The owner of the Tuck Shop located
at AgeCare Sagewood chose to not renew their lease and we would like to
thank the Tuck Shops owner for being
a part of the AgeCare Sagewood community since the opening of phase II
in the fall of 2013, the statement read.
While we explore opportunities for the
use of the vacated space, the community will continue to offer programs that
provide snacks to the residents, host
vendors who bring in their products
such as clothing and speciality gifts,
in addition to the onside vending machines for snacks and beverages.
According to Mitzner it was an emotional goodbye for some of the residents when the store closed its doors
for good last week.

Rosebud alumni start new Calgary theatre company

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Rosebud School of the Arts graduates Conrad Belau and
Sienna Holden have created a new company, called Theatre
of Consequence, and are in rehearsals for their first production.
The Monument by Colleen Wagner, a Governor Generals award
winner, will play at The Motel Theatre in Arts Commons in Calgary,
June 15-18.
Conrad Belau, who graduated
from Rosebud School of the Arts
(RSA) in 2012, said he and Holden
didnt make lightly the decision to
start their own theatre company.
It just came down to the fact that
we werent seeing the stories we
wanted to see on the stages in Calgary, he said.
They want to tell grittier stories,
he said, stories that say, The hard
stuff exists, yes, and lets name it
and lets all acknowledge it, but
also lets be able to move past it and
take what weve learned from this
and move on and be better people.
(The Monument) tells the story
of a young soldier named Stetko,
who is about to be executed for
crimes against humanity, when this
strange woman appears in the execution chamber with him and basically gives him a chance to redeem himself, said Belau,
who is director. She tells him, I will save you and I will
take you away from this space but you have to do everything that I tell you to do.
He has to confront the things that hes done, but it also
forces this woman to confront who she really is. The thing
deals with how we deal with people that were afraid of,
and how we deal with situations that just bring out anger

in us.
One of the joys of running their own company, Belau
said, is choosing the cast and crew theyll work with. In The
Monument, Karen Johnson-Diamond of Calgary plays Mejra. University of Calgary graduate Jonathan Molinski plays
Stetko. RSA student Caitlyn OConnor plays Girl.
RSA graduate Naomi Esau is stage
manager. Chantal Marsolais, a former
RSA student, is costume designer.
Kathryn Smith is light and sound designer. John Knight is fight director.
What Im most excited for audiences to see in this story is that anything is possible with forgiveness,
Belau said. The story is filled to the
brim with hope. Its a hope thats
kind of hidden under the dirt, dare I
say, but its there. The play will ask a
lot from its audience.
He wants the play to give a lot in
return: the message that even the
most evil people deserve love.
Were all humans, in the end, he
said. Were all just figuring out ways
through this life. How do I treat this
person thats so evil? How do I give
them grace or understanding?
People who want to challenge
themselves will love The Monument,
Belau said, as will those who want to
see a beautiful show.
Im trying to create a piece of theatre that is beautiful to watch, that is
beautiful to experience, that is hard
but is visually striking, he said. People who love beautiful
art hopefully would love this piece of theatre ... its not going to be easy, but its going to be really worthwhile.
The Monument plays June 15-18 in The Motel Theatre in
Arts Commons. It has a mature content warning. E-mail theatreofconsequence@gmail.com or phone 587-887-1002 for
tickets. See the Theatre of Consequence Facebook page for
more details.

Town launches new userfriendly recreational portal

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

With
a
noticeable
growth in athletic events,
participation, and recreational facilities such
as the newly constructed
Lions Regional Outdoor
Rink and the anticipated
field house the current
method of keeping the
public informed turned
obsolescent, driving up
demand for a new system and leading the
town to launch a new
recreational portal, concurrently with the start
of REC the Streets.
The
user-friendly
multi-purpose
portal
went live on June 1, after years of feedback
accentuated the need
for a greater and more
practical web presence
for online registration,
particular in relation to
the Strathmore Aquatic
Centre.
By taking into consideration Strathmores
existing
recreational
amenities and increasing
opportunities, such as
the addition of the Palomino water polo team
and the disc golf course,

the town became proactive in providing the

community with an accessible tool for Strathmores recreational activities.
The main reason why
we did it was we had to
find a new provider for
online registration so in
that process of looking,
we decided to take it to
the next step and create
the platform for it a little
more intensely than just
online registration, said
Tracy Simpson, community services coordinator
for the Town of Strathmore.
A couple of years
ago there was a huge
demand to push online
registration for the pool.
The software that we
currently use to book the
facilities is becoming obsolete so we had to find
new ones, and we wanted to find one software
that did it all; online registration, bookings, [and]
a web presence.
The portal contains
information on the various facilities, schedules,
maps, parks and pathways, and upcoming
events.

In addition, the online

tool allows for profile
creation that can link to
numerous accounts and
keep family members
up-to-date on personal
schedules and events.
The planning stages
of the project began in
January, and while its
only been a few days,
the platform is already
gaining traction.
Were starting to see
people create accounts
and getting ready for
swimming registration
and the more we get on
here the more we are
going to see the traffic,
said Simpson.
We want people to
check it out and let us
know what they think.
Its a new website, so
theres going to be a few
glitches here and there,
so we want to know
about it.
Simpson encourages
anyone with information on races, events,
and
tournaments
to
contact the town at 403934-3133 or E-mail recreation@strathmore.ca.
To check out the recreational portal, visit rec.
strathmore.ca.

The Strathmore Spartans high school girls rugby team played in the ASAA provincials on June 3-4 and ended up second in Alberta by winning silver.

Spartans win silver at provincials!

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

The Strathmore Spartan Girls Rugby team showed what teamwork and
perseverance could do after winning
silver during Alberta Schools Athletic
Associations (ASAA) provincials in Lethbridge on June 3-4. After struggling
to work as a cohesive unit in the beginning of the season, the athletes managed to come together to win zones,
a feat they had never managed before

and showed their true stamina. Eight

of the best teams in Alberta qualified
for provincials. While the Spartans
won their quarter and Semi-finals, they
lost in the finals to the hosts Winston
Churchill High School, with a final
score of 12-42.
You know this was truly a team effort, said Jerry Flaws, the Spartan girls
rugby coach.
The team played very well, they
supported each other, they played together, and it was a complete team ef-

fort to get that medal.

The team made a number of historical firsts, as this was the first time the
team had won zones making it to the
provincials on their own merit, having
usually taken part in provincials as the
wild card or the host. They also made
a 95-metre dash during the last play
of the semi-finals to win 24-17 against
F.P Walshe School, a team the Spartans
have never defeated before in the history of the program.
While the team struggled in the be-

focused on tackling, wrecking, and
defense, which Flaws said made a noticeable difference this year.
While this is the end of the season
for the team, many of the girls will go
on to play for summer rugby clubs.
We are very proud of what they
have done this year, said Flaws.
We took 40 girls and made it eventually down to one team. Even the girls
who didnt place supported each other
and it created a great environment.

Three Strathmore Venom lacrosse
teams qualified for the finals during the
11th annual Redneck Rumble Tournament, where 17 teams competed for
medals last weekend.
The peewee, bantam and midget B division teams took on other finalists from
Alberta during the weekend long event.
While the Venom peewee and Venom
midget walked away with gold medals
the bantam team, despite putting up a
good fight, were unable to beat Cranbrook with a final score of 7-3. The Venom peewee team took gold against the
Calgary Hornets, while the Venom midget team won gold in overtime against
Cranbrook. The tournament was held at
the Strathmore Family Centre from June
3-5 and had athletes ranging in ages
from nine to 16.

I would say in the tournament we obviously stepped up, said Scott Fargey,
the president of Strathmore Lacrosse
Club. It is a big deal for everyone and
the kids take it really seriously. The kids
love the tournament and we have good
support from the fans and the community.
Fargey explained that while the Venom peewee team was doing really well
in league games and was currently in
second place, the midget and bantam
teams were struggling in their leagues.
Therefore the success observed this
weekend provided the teams with a
confidence boost moving forward.
This year the organizers were swamped
with the number of teams trying to enter
for one of the 18 spots. However, one of
the teams dropped out at the last minute
leaving 17 teams to battle. Some of the
teams that played during the weekend
were from Leduc, Okotoks, Cranbrook,
Calgary and Strathmore.
The tournament and the town received a lot of positive feedback from
parents, coaches and teams. Fargey said
the manager of the Cranbrook team had
come up to him after the midget final
and commended the club for putting on
the tournament as well as the hospitality
of Strathmore.

but was eliminated from the tournament after losing the first game
of the playoffs.
It was a solid effort by the
team, said Lanky Johnson, the Junior B coach.
For the five games we had to
use one pitcher throughout the
weekend as two of our pitchers
are out with injuries.
However the highlight of the
tournament for Johnson was the
triple play the team made on the
Friday night. A triple play is a rare
act where a team makes three
outs, touching a player before
they get to the next base, during
the same continuous play.
The U18 team also took part in
the tournament and completed
the weekend with a one win and
three loss round robin.

Giving back to KidSport

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Board members of the Strathmore
Community Football Association (SCFA)
decided to tee off for a good cause and
ensure many of their players have the
opportunity to continue playing in the
sport.
The 10th Annual Whipper Memorial
Golf Tourney took place on May 31 to
raise funds for KidSport Calgary. The
organization raises funds for children
to take part in sports and lead a more
active lifestyle.
After receiving notification about the
event, the association decided to participate and contribute to the cause.
Some of the people within our association take advantage of our KidSport
program, said Carl Seafoot, SCFA president. So we just figured it was right in

our backyard here and it was a really

good thing to support.
Seafoot explained that while the
board members are not pro golfers,
they had fun taking part.
The golf tourney is in memory of
John Whipp, who spent nearly 35 years
helping minor sport in a number of different positions such as coaching and
refereeing. His son, David Whipp, said
that they started the tournament to
keep helping minor sports.
For the first three years of the tournament, Blackfoot Minor Hockey received
a donation as it was the league Davids
son played in. Once he left the league,
the funding went to KidSport.
Not including this years donation,
the tournament has raised $17,000 for
the organization. While they are still
waiting for some money to come in, the
tournament was able to raise $4,355.

Jan 4, 1948 - June 2, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jerry
(Jake) Wilson Yaskiw at the age of 68
years old. Jake is survived by his wife of 41 years
Colleen, his children Nolan (Leila) and Faren and his
granddaughters Blythe, Lennon and Skylar. He is also
survived by his brothers Ron (Pat) and Bob (Lynne)
Yaskiw and brother and sister in law Lorna and Vern
Maerz, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and
other extended family. He was predeceased by his
parents Harry and Mary and his brother Rick. Jake
was born in Rossburn, Manitoba January 4, 1948 into
a strong Ukranian family, where he developed his
love for Ukranian dance, music, pierogis and cabbage
rolls. His first language was Ukranian and he wasnt
taught English until he needed to learn it for grade
school. At the age of 21 years, Jake moved to Regina
to attend RCMP training, a move that started a 25
year career in law enforcement, with over 14 of those
in the RCMP. While a member, Jake had postings in
Killam, Three Hills, Red Deer, Ponoka and Andrew. It
was during his posting in Three Hills that Jake met
Colleen Helton in 1971 and the two were married May
3, 1975. Jake and Colleen proudly welcomed their
son Nolan in 1982 and daughter Faren in 1986. In his
younger years, Jake had a real passion for many different sports and activities. He taught Ukranian dance
as a teenager, he played on numerous curling and
softball teams over the years, and he also enjoyed
playing golf and going fishing. One of Jakes largest
passions in his spare time was anything to do with
music, which included not only listening to music but
also being able to play 7 different instruments. Jake
had an innate desire for helping others and beyond
his career in law enforcement, he also volunteered
on the Strathmore fire department for many years.
Since his passing, friends have expressed their
memories of Jake being a gentle and compassionate
person, a captivating story teller and always ready
with a new joke or to share legal advice. Jake had an
amazing memory and even decades after leaving law
enforcement he could still quote section numbers of
the highway traffic act and criminal code. His family
fondly remembers Jake as a simple, yet extraordinary
man who preferred spending intimate time with close
family and friends, over larger social gatherings.
There are many special memories of fishing adventures, long dog walks, canal floats, river visits, West
Ed trips, and family gatherings listening to Jake play
the accordion. In his later years he enjoyed quieter
activities such as crossword and Sudoku puzzles,
tending to his dog Toby, and spending time with his
family. Our hearts will forever be missing a piece, but
we will honour your memory by remembering to take
the time to enjoy the little things in life and to always
appreciate a good home cooked meal. A funeral service was held at Hope Community Covenant Church
(245 Brent Blvd Strathmore AB) on Tuesday, June 7,
2016. To send condolences, please visit Jakes obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca or send emails
directly to condolences@wheatlandfuneralhome.ca

lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to

The moment that you left me, my heart was split in

two, one side was filled with memories, the other
side died with you. I often lay awake at night when
the world is fast asleep, and take a walk down
memory lane with tears upon my cheek.
Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday, but
missing you is a heartache that never goes away.
I hold you tightly within my heart and there you
will remain, you see life has gone on without you,
but will never be the same.

If we listen really closely

in the silence of the night
We hear your voice to comfort us
and say that youre alright
But its often hard to understand
Why certain things must be
And all the reasons why they
happen
Are so often hard to see
But we find comfort in the
knowledge
That God is always there
To keep the one we loved so
much
Forever in his care.
