Albany, New York The African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region is proud to present the 12th
Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at Washington Park from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

celebrating the future. The Juneteenth Celebration features a wide variety of family-friendly entertainment, kids
zone, chess area, drums area, crafts area, stage with world-class live entertainment, educational opportunities
and food, beverage and retail vendors.
To start off the celebration, the 1st annual Juneteenth Cultural Parade will begin at noon along the Knox Street
Mall within Washington Park. The parade acknowledges African American people past, present and future and
will include youth groups, community members and churches.
Stage entertainment will be MCd by Dee Watson and performances include Grammy prize winners Young Noble

singers, dance, poetry readings and children performances.
Community and family activities include a Chess Tournament, Trolley Tour with the Underground Railroad History
Project, Kids Zone, Drums Area and more.
Juneteenth is considered the date when the last slaves in America were freed. Although the rumors of freedom
were widespread prior to this, actual emancipation did not come until General Gordon Granger rode into
Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No. 3 on June 19, almost two and a half years after President
Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth symbolizes the end of slavery, and for many African-Americans, it has come to mean what Fourth of
July means for all Americansfreedom. It serves as a historical milestone reminding Americans of the triumph of
the human spirit over the cruelty of slavery. It honors those African-American ancestors who survived the
institution of bondage.
Juneteenth 2016 is presented free and open to the public by the African American Cultural Center of the Capital
Region in partnership with the City of Albany.
