Lake Michigan Beach ErosiO'n Rampage May Cost $20 Million

CHICAGO
<UP I )
-Lake
Michigan, a friendly giant which
moderates climate and provides
four states with fresh water,
recreation , commerce and indust.ry, is on a beach erosion
rampage which may cost shore
communities $20 million.
Trees, utilities lines, buildings
and highways are being washed
away . A college campus and a city
expressway are in jeopardy.
Near record water leve.ls in four
of the five Great Lakes~epositories
of a fifth of the earth's fresh water
upply-have sent Lake Michigan,
one of the shallowest or the five, on
a shoreline swallowing spree. Eac.h
new squall of an abnormally stormy
ummer brings new ravages.
The winds across Lake Michigan
are prevailing westerlies-as in most
of the rest of the nation-so the
damage has been greatest along the
Michigan shore. But there has been
vere damage to shore communities in Wisconsin, Illinois and
Indiana , too.
Five years ago the lake level ,
following a four-year drought, was
the lowest on record. There were
outcries against Chicago's water
diversion for the Ulinois waterways
.ystem . Now the lake level is 4~
feet higher and there are accusations that navigation interests
are curtailing diversion.
For each foot of increase in water
level , 25 feet of shoreline is
wallowed. A cyclical rise in water
level coupled with an unusually
wet, cool summer brought the lake

a year ago and within a foot of the
record mark or 581.9 feet set in 1886.
At St. Joseph, Mich., a home
owner is dumping junked cars into
the water in an errort to halt erosion
of a shoreside bluff on which hi
home sits . At Kenosha , Wis .,
Carthage College has hauled in
boulders to prevent the home of its
preside.nt, perched on an eroding
cliff, from being washed away.
One Michigan home owner
bought the rubble from a razed
courthouse and dumped it into th
lake in an errort to halt wave
erosion of his homesite.
At Winthrop Harbor, Ill ., the lake
undermined a two-block section of
Oak Shore Drive. On Michigan's
Mackinac Island the water undermined sections of the shoreline
highway circling the island. The
Michigan Highway Department
budgeted $1 million for a seawall to
prevent 3,900 feet or e.xpressway
from being washed out along a clay
bluff south of Benton Harbor.
In Indiana, the beaches along the
famed Sand Dunes were disappearing.
The Michigan Water Resou.rc
Commission estimated that
damage would e.xceed the $20
miiJion cost of the last high water
level in 1951, and some experts were
predicting that next year will be
even worse.
The erosion is playing havoc with
shoreline property values. A million
