subject-verb agreement

your turn

As you are building your sentences you should keep in mind that
the verb must always agree with the subject of a sentence. This
is true for all present tense verbs and auxiliary verbs.

Choose the best answer to complete each sentence.

The basic rule states that singular subjects need singular verbs
and plural subjects need plural verbs. In this lesson we will focus
on how to identify singular and plural verbs and their subjects.
For example, in the sentence I am a teacher, both the subject I
and the verb am are in the singular form. If the sentence had a
plural subject and a plural verb, it would read, We are teachers.
Here are some more examples:
Singular Subjects and Verbs
I love chocolate.
You are a good student.
He has a blue pen.

1. Please _________ me to everyone here. I dont know anyone.

a. introduce
b. introduced c. introduces

3. My family ________ for a reunion two times per year.

a. meets
b. met

6. We are ___________. We _____ the same parents.

a. related, have

Verbs do not form their plurals by

adding an -s like nouns do. To know
whether to use the singular or plural
form, you need to decide if the subject
represents more than one person,
place or thing.

7. Your family ______ ten people. It ____ a big family.
