SPECIAL PROGRAMS OF LEARNING ARABIC (PKPBA)

UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang

A. Background
Driven by the desire to realize “the intellect professional
ulama” and “the ulama professional intellect'", The State
Islamic University (UIN) Malang, since 1997, make serious
efforts to combine the mastery of modern science with the
religious sciences. University that was not yet one year old
and his physical building is still being arranged, according to
his leaders enforced on the principle of non-sectarianism. No
distinction between ethnic, religious school and educational
background.

UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang considered that the

development of Arabic at this university is very strategic and
urgent because many people who are concerned with the real
condition of the Islamic universities in Indonesia, specially
PTAIN, including the Minister and the former Minister of
Religious Affairs. In addition, the Arabic language is the key to
opening the source or roots of Islamic science Islamic sciences.
Quran, the books of Tafseer, Hadith, Fiqh, etc. all speak in
Arabic. It is impossible that the people can master in these
areas properly and accurately without mastering the Arabic
language very well.

Arabic language skills that have been believed as a

requirement for every student who study the Islamic studies in
the collage have not proved entirely satisfactory. Most
prospective students of UIN / IAIN / STAIN generally come from
the Islamic Senior High School graduates, who have low
proficiency in Arabic. If there is a good, it is very small and
usually derived from Islamic Senior High School graduate who
was held in the Islamic boarding school or a graduate of the
Special Program of Islamic Senior High School (MAPK) or MAK
at a model school or a superior school.

Low level of proficiency in Arabic and indeed other foreign

languages (English) also experienced by students and alumnus
of UIN / IAIN / STAIN. This can be seen when held selection for
further study (S2), which Arabic and English became the main
test subject in this selection process was a lot of them who
have difficulty in following the exam in that languages.

UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang considers that the Arabic

language ability is a necessary condition that must be able by
every student who would study of Islamic studies, hadith, fiqh,
theology, sufism, kalam and the other Islamic sciences. This is
based on empirical fact that the sciences are written and
described in Arabic.

Rationally, it is highly impossible that anyone can master in the

discipline Islamic sciences as above, without having an intact
ability in Arabic. Thus, for Islamic studies institutions such as
UIN, IAIN or STAIN mastering Arabic is a requirement for
students to explore critically Islamic sciences developed
seriously.

Within this framework, the idea of establishment the Special

Program of Learning Arabic (PKPBA) in the State Islamic
University (UIN) Malang to be supported, preserved and
developed.
