Councillor benets

Municipalities are graded between 1 and 6, with a small


municipality being graded as a 1 and a metro 6.
Grading depends on the municipalitys total income and
population size

R3 485 and all others get R1 739

In cellphone data allowances, all


councillors may be reimbursed an
amount not exceeding R300 a month

15% of councillors salary goes to their


pension fund, included in the total
package

Municipalities also take out a special risk


cover on the properties of councillors as a
result of riots, civil unrest, strike or public
disorder. Fixed property limited to R1.5m
and vehicle to R750 000. Life and
disability cover limited to double the
remuneration package. The municipality
also provides alternative accommodation
for 30 days when property is damaged,
reviewable
Municipality provides tools of trade, such
as computers, stationery, etc

Security personnel (bodyguards)


provided in cases where risk has been
established

Municipality may pay for the capacity


building of councillors, including
education and training
