Need to create a USB, DVD or ISO?

If you need to install or reinstall Windows 10 using a USB or DVD, you can use the media
creation tool below to create your own installation media with either a USB flash drive or a
DVD. The tool provides file formats optimised for download speed and can be used to create
ISO files.
If youre on an Enterprise edition, the media creation tool and theUpgradenowbutton
above wont work for an upgrade. Please see the Volume L icensing S ervice Center for
more info.
Before you begin
Make sure that you have:
An Internet connection (Internet service provider fees may apply).
Sufficient data storage available on a computer, USB or external drive for the
download.
A blank USB or DVD (and DVD burner) with at least 4 GB of space if you want to
create media. We recommend using a blank USB or blank DVD, because any content
on it will be deleted.
Check these things on the PC on which you want to install Windows 10:
64-bit or 32-bit processor (CPU). Youll create either the 64-bit or 32-bit version
of Windows 10 thats appropriate for your CPU. To check this on your PC, go to PC
info in PC settings or S ystem in Control Panel, and look for S ystem type.

10. We also recommend that you visit your PC manufacturers website for
information about updated drivers and hardware compatibility.
L anguage in Window s. Youll need to choose the same language when you install
Windows 10. To see what language youre currently using, go to Time and
language in PC settings or R egion in Control Panel.
Edition of Window s. You should also choose the same edition of Windows. To
check what edition youre currently running, go to PC info in PC settings or S ystem
in Control Panel, and look for Window s edition. Windows 10 Enterprise isnt
available here. Please see the Volume L icensing S ervice Center for more info.
Microsoft Office products. If you just purchased a new device that includes Office
365, we recommend redeeming (installing) Office before upgrading to Windows 10.
To redeem your copy of Office, please see Dow nload and install Office 365
Home, Personal or University on your PC. For more info, check How to
upgrade to Window s 10 on new devices that include Office 365.
If you have Office 2010 or earlier and choose to perform a clean install of Windows
10, you will need to locate your Office product key. For tips on locating your product
key, see Find your Office 2010 product key or Enter the product key for
your Office 2007 program.

Important
To upgrade for free, select theUpgrade now option at the top of this page.
We recommend using the media creation tool on a PC running Windows 7 or
Windows 8.1. If you run this tool on a PC running Windows 10, it can overwrite
temporary files that are needed if you ever want to go back to your previous
operating system.

Using the media creation tool

Upgrade to Window s 10 using the tool
If youre currently running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update, follow
these instructions to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.
Before you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free, your current version of

Windows must be activated with a genuine licence. To make sure that its
activated, from S tart, search for File Explorer and select it from the search
results. Press and hold or right-click This PC and select Properties. Your
Windows activation status is listed at the bottom.
Notes:
If your current version of Windows isnt activated, see this support article
for more info.
The media creation tool cant be used to upgrade Enterprise editions of
Windows. For more info, go to the Volume L icensing S ervice Center.
To upgrade to Windows 10:
1. Run the media creation tool.
2. If youre upgrading the device that you downloaded the tool on, select
Upgrade this PC now .
-orIf you want to create media to upgrade a different device, select Create
installation media for another PC.
3. Select the language, edition and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows
10. This table will help you decide which edition of Windows 10 youll need

4. If you chose Upgrade this PC, follow the steps in the tool to finish the
upgrade to Windows 10.
If you chose to create media, follow the steps to create the media. After the
media has been created, select Finish, then follow one of these instructions:
If youre using a USB flash drive or a DVD, insert it into the device that
you want to upgrade, then run setup.exe.
Once the upgrade starts, remove the USB flash drive or DVD before the
first time the installation restarts your device. If you dont, the device will
boot from the media again and will restart the whole installation
process.
If you created an ISO file, move the ISO file to that device, mount it, then
run setup.exe.
5. Follow the instructions to finish upgrading to Windows 10.

Perform a clean installation using a US B or DVD

Follow these instructions to perform a clean installation of Windows 10. If you
want to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, follow the instructions in the
Upgrade to Window s 10 using the tool section. If you havent upgraded to
Windows 10 yet and perform a clean installation, youll need to enter a
qualifying product key for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, or buy a
licence in order to activate Windows 10. Click here for info about qualified
editions.

Warning
If you format a drive partition during installation, any data on the partition
will be erased. Make sure that you back up any data you want to keep
before you begin.
1. Run the media creation tool.
2. Select Create installation media for another PC.
3. Select the language, edition and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows
10.

4. Follow the steps to create the installation media, then select Finish when
its done.
5. When youre ready to perform a clean installation, turn on your PC, insert
the DVD or USB flash drive you created, then shut down your PC.
6. Restart your PC, then press any key to boot from the DVD or USB flash
drive.
If you restart your PC and your current version of Windows starts, you
might have to open a boot menu or change the boot order in your PCs
BIOS or UEFI settings so that your PC boots from the media. To open a boot
menu or change the boot order, youll typically need to press a combination
of keys (such as F2, F12, Delete or Esc) immediately after you turn on your
PC. For instructions on changing the boot order for your PC, check the
documentation that came with your PC or go to the manufacturers website.
If changing the boot menu or order doesnt work, try again by signing in to
Windows, shutting down, then starting your PC.
7. On the Install Window s page, enter your language and other preferences,
then select Next.
8. Select Install Window s.
9. On the Enter the product key to activate Window s page, enter your
product key. The product key should be in a purchase confirmation email if
you bought Windows10. It looks like this: PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

Note
If youve already successful activated Windows 10 on this PC, including
if you upgraded by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer, you
wont need to enter a Windows10 product key. You can skip the
product key page by selecting the S kip button. Your PC will
automatically activate later.
10. On the L icence terms page, if you accept the licence terms, select I accept
the licence terms, then select Next.
11. On the Which type of installation do you w ant? page, select Custom.
12. On the Where do you w ant to install Window s? page, select the
partition that you want, select the formatting option that you want to
perform (if needed), then follow the instructions.
13. When youve finished formatting, select Next.
14. Follow the rest of the setup instructions to finish installing Windows.
