ESSAY

A. Definition
An essay is usually a short piece of writing in a particular subject
(cambridge, advance, learners, dictionary). In a more specific term an essay,
according to audio english.net, mean an analytic or interpretive literary
composition. Each paragraph discusses one major point and each paragraph
should lead directly to the next paragraph. For the more, every paragraph is tied
together with an introduction and a conclusion.
B. Purpose
Each writer has their own goal when they want to make an essay. There are
several purposes for example like to inform, persuade, explain or entertain. When
you write to inform, your goal is to give your reader information they dont
already have. In other hand, when you write persuade your goal is to make your
reader to follow or take action (at least want to take action) based on what youve
written. In other hand, when you write to explain your goal is to help your reader
understand a process or situation. Lastly, when you write to entertain your goal is
to provide an emotional experience for your reader.
C. Characteristic
Usually, essay should have a model as follows:
Preliminary: Containing Title Page
Main text: Containing Introduction, Main Body and Conclusion
End Matter: References.
And main text of essay has three main parts as follows:
An introduction
A main body
A conclusion

The introduction concist of two parts:

a) It should include a view general statement about the subject to provide a


background to our essay and to attract the readers attention. It should try to
explain why we are writing the essay. It may include a definition of terms in
the context of the essay, and so forth.
b) It should also include a statement of the specific subdivisions of the topic
and/or indication of how the topic is going to be tackled in order to
specifically addres the question. Furthermore, it should introduce the central
idea or the main purpose of the writing. It should address the question.
The main body consist of one or more pharagraphs of ideas and arguments.
Each paragraph develops a subdivision of the topic. The paragraphs of the essay
contain the main ideas and arguments of the essay together with illustrations or
examples. The paragraphs are linked in order to connect the ideas. The purpose of
the essay must be made clear, and the reader must be able to follow its
development.
The conclussion includes the writers finsl points which should recall the
issues raised in the introduction and draw together the points made in the main
body and explain the overall significance of the conclusions. What general points
can be drawn from the essay as a whole? Moreover, it should clearly signal to the
reader that the essay is finished and leave a clear, impression that the purpose of
the essay has been achieved, and that the question has been answered.

D. Type of Essay

There are many opinions about how an essay is organized. According to Andy
Gillet (2009), the essays are organized differently according to their purpose and
can be divided into the following main types:
1. The descriptive essay
The descriptive essays are essays that discuss the following matters, such as
description of object or place; describing a sequence of events; describing a
process or describing and explaining and so forth.
2. The argument essay
The argument essays are essays that discuss the following matters, such as
balanced view, persuasive essay, to what extent essay and so forth.
3. Compare and contrast essay
Compare and contrast essays are essays that discuss the following matters, such as
contrast essay, compare essay, compare and contrast essay.
