Shamong school
district students,
staff recognized

The June 14 Board of Education meeting in Shamong opened
with a celebration of student success. Students from across the district were honored for outstanding creative achievement and exemplary work with certificates
from the board.
The end of the year meeting is
always great to celebrate achievements of our students and honors
of our staff and our families here
in Shamong, Superintendent
Christine Vespe said.
Beginning the awards presentation, Indian Mills School art
teacher Kimbery Shaw-Hartman
briefly discussed this years agricultural theme and presented
seven artwork awards. These
awards included the Superintendents Awards, given to students
whose artwork is selected to be

Achieving academic success is
no simple task. However, for
Seneca High School valedictorian
Michael A. Miller, it seems to
come easily. Describing his work
ethic as pretty casual, he admits that once he knows what
must be done, he then works it
into his schedule around other assignments, sports and fun activities.
During his high school career,
Miller enjoyed his time spent in
calculus class and, as a lover of
cooking, in his foods classes. He
admits the four years of high
school go by very fast, and recommends all incoming freshmen be
open to any opportunities given

to them so they will grow and experience these years to the fullest.
Despite his high school career
coming to a close, Miller has big
plans ahead of him. He intends to
obtain his bachelors degree in
computer science from the College of Engineering with a minor
in business at Villanova University, where he will be studying this
coming fall. Someday he hopes to
use this education to work in
cyber security, ultimately helping
to make the world a safer place
while simplifying life.
Many of my friends knew of
my interest in business as early
as the sixth grade when I operated a little business during my
lunch period, Warheads Incorporated. I bought Warhead candy at
a deep discount after Halloween,

brought it to
school
and
had
classmates sell it at
a very high
markup,
Miller
said.
My
classmates worked
on
commission, and I
MILLER
earned a couple hundred
dollars over two marking periods.
Although he pointed out the
school eventually frowned upon
his selling of candy, this experience helped him look toward possibilities for the future. Also

Erin Welling. A lover of Senecas

calculus 1 and 2 and wind ensemble classes, she plans to pursue a
secondary education degree in
electrical engineering with a
minor in mathematics.
Next fall, Welling will be pursuing this degree at the University
of Pittsburgh. She chose this university not only because she fell
in love with the city of Pittsburgh, but also because here she
will be able to study in her desired major while also continuing
her love of music by participating in the schools band.
Helping guide her educational
success, Welling credits her freshman year biology teacher and
long-time family friend, Bonnie
Horner, with inspiring her academic career. She notes Horner
has always seen her potential and
helped to push her in all of her
endeavors, academic or otherwise. In addition to Horner,
Welling admits others have also
largely influenced her recognition as salutatorian.
My role models are my parents. They have both worked hard
to achieve success in their own
careers, Welling said. Growing

up
seeing
their success
and happiness
has inspired
me to want to
be better and
establish myself in my
own
career,
and also to
create a wonWELLING
derful, loving
family in the future.
While Welling certainly made
time to hit the books during her
four years at Seneca, she did not
forget to have fun along the way.
Recalling her favorite high school
memory, she thought back to her
days proudly marching out into
MetLife Stadium alongside the
band during Friday Night Lights
and during practices memories
she knows she will cherish forever.
The best advice I could give an
incoming freshman would be to
take as many opportunities as
you can and live with no regrets,
because soon enough, high school

College graduates bring STEAM workshops to library

Think Like a Girl workshops are for ages 6 to 12 on Aug. 9 and Aug. 11
The Burlington County Library System
is excited to present a series of STEAM
workshops featuring fun, hands-on activities for ages 6 to 12 at all library branches
this summer.
Focusing on basic engineering principles, the workshops will be taught by members of Think Like a Girl, a startup company of young entrepreneurs seeking to empower girls to develop into our worlds
problem solvers.
Formed by a group of Rowan University
mechanical engineering students and re-

cent graduates, Think Like a Girl offers a

subscription service of engineering kits
marketed toward young girls to encourage
them to learn about engineering in ways
they enjoy. The company also reaches
out to the community to teach girls
about engineering and future STEM careers.
The workshops will be presented in two
Think Like a Girl Aspiring Engineer programs: Gemma Gadget for ages 6 to 9;
and Gaby Gadget for ages 10 to 12. Both
programs will feature fun hands-on activi-

ties that teach basic engineering principles

and STEAM skills.
The workshops are free, but space is limited and registration is required.
The schedule includes:
Gemma Gadget for ages 6 to 9 at the
Pinelands Library in Medford on July 5 at
6:30 p.m. and at the Evesham Library on
Aug. 9.
Gaby Gadget for ages 10 to 12 at the
Pinelands Library in Medford on July 7 at
6:30 p.m. and at the Evesham Library on
Aug. 11.

Brittney Raffo wins

first Meet of Champions
title in pole vault
Raffo tied personal best with 12-foot vault
on first attempt at the height to win competition

Last spring, Seneca High
School junior Brittney Raffo competed in pole vault for the first
time in her life. Her highest vault
from the 2015 season was nine
feet.
One year later, Raffo has gone
from pole vault beginner to the
best in New Jersey.
Raffo won the girls pole vault
at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on June 8, making a 12-foot
high vault on her first attempt to
clinch the win. The victory was a
high point in a season where
Raffo established herself as one
of the best vaulters in the state.
Raffo knew she had a chance to
contend for the title entering the
meet. The week prior to the Meet
of Champions, Raffo had a 12-foot
vault at the NJSIAA Group III
State Championships. It was

Raffos first time reaching the 12foot mark.

I was pretty confident going
into it, Raffo said. I knew what I
had to do and what I had to get
done.
Unlike the Meet of Champions,
Raffo only finished in second
place at the Group III championships, mostly because it took
more than one attempt for her to
get over 12 feet.
I knew that the other girls
were very good vaulters, Raffo
said. I thought the winning jump
would be around 12-6.
Raffo very nearly didnt make
it deep into the event. Raffo struggled on the opening height of 10feet, six-inches. She managed to
get over the height on her third
attempt and continue on.
It took me a little bit to get my
legs going, Raffo said.

along the way, Miller said.
This chain of support did not
come without many great times
and long-lasting memories. As
Miller thought back on all of the
memories from his four years at
Seneca, he recalled the senior
class trip to Disney World as topping the list. While this trip may
be over, and he and his friends
may be parting ways next fall, he
knows that again, the Class of
2016 has a future full of possibilities.

When Raffo reached the 12-foot

height mark, she knew getting
over it on her first attempt would
give her an advantage. When multiple athletes are tied at the same
height in pole vault, the athlete
who reaches the height in
the fewest attempts is placed
higher.

Raffo gave a lot of credit to her

coach, Brian Mondschein, with
helping her prepare for her firstplace vault.
It was just a matter of being
on the right pole and learning
which poles to use and which
jump, Raffo said. It was definitely a help.
Raffo made her 12-foot vault on
her first attempt and finally
clinched the win when Michelle
Rubinetti of Northern Valley
High School and Julia Dannenbaum of the Pingry School were

unable to make their attempts at

12-feet, six-inches.
Raffo said the Meet of Champions victory is easily the biggest
athletic accomplishment in her
life so far.
The most exciting part was
seeing my coaches and parents
reaction, she said.
After finishing with a pole
vault title in just her second outdoor track season, Raffo said she
cant wait to return to the runway
in 2017 to try to defend her Meet
of Champions title.

The graduation ceremony for
the 47 members of the St. Mary of
the Lakes School, Class of 2016
was held on Tuesday June 14. Father Dan celebrated the mass
along with Monsignor Dubell.
At this ceremony, scholarships
awarded to the Class of 2016 totaled $42,750. Students receiving
these awards will be attending
the following high schools:
Bishop Eustace Preparatory
School, St. Joseph Preparatory
School, Holy Cross Academy,
Camden Catholic High School,
Shawnee High School, Seneca
High School, Lenape High School
and St. Augustine Preparatory
School.
In a tie, Donya Kowalski and
Giavonna Gaw had the highest
GPAs grades five through eight.
Aside from solely academic
awards, Rachel Orr and Addison
Malady won the Leadership
Award, Hayden Peterson won the
Principles and Values of SML
Award and Mia Fornito won the I
Care Award and the School Spirit
Award.
Receiving $1,750 financial
scholarships, Kathryn Bjorklund
and Zachary Morrison both won
the Sister Justina Award and
Scholarship. Next, Addison Malady won the Bernice Pascarello
Award and Scholarship of $2,000
and Donya Kowlaski received
$1,000 by winning the Stephanie
Bader Memorial Scholarship.
In terms of school-specific
scholarships, Season Russell received the Catholic Fellowship
scholarship from Holy Cross and
was awarded $2,000 per year for
four years. Also from Holy Cross,
Alexandra Mongrandi and Nice
Woodham-Simpson were the big

that related to agriculture, which
is a big part of Shamong, ShawHartman said. All of my students did very well and learned a
lot this year.

Independent Principals Award,
and Camille Collins, Matthew
Leo, Jayna Phillips and Haylee
Mehigan were named as the
fourth-grade recipients of the
Principals Award.
Being able to draw was fun,
especially because I like our art
teacher a lot. Im very happy I

won because two of my best

friends won this award with me,
9-year-old Mehigan said.
Aside from art awards, areas of
study including science, writing
and music were also celebrated.
During the school year, astronomers visited IMS for both
Astronomy Day and Astronomy
Night. From their experiences,
they selected two students to receive the NASA Night Sky Network Recognition Award Tyler
Thomas and Brady Winger.
[The astronomers] were so impressed with these two young
mens answers to their questions
and how they could describe exactly what they saw in the sky
that they said, Wow, we are giving them this recognition, IMS
IMAGE teacher Karen Clementi
said. Hopefully you guys can
come back with your telescopes
and teach other students one
day.
Distinguishing the districts
musicians, Sophia Corona, Julianna Graeber, Emily Haines, Isabel Kagan and Alexandra Smith
received certificates for their participation in the All South Jersey
Elementary Choir Festival. As for
writing, the VFW Patriots Essay
Contest Winners were also announced and recognized Luke
Walker in first place and Morgan
Hough in second.

participate in an essay contest, so
all of my students, whether they
want to or not, participate in this

As for Teacher of the Year,
IMMS Spanish teacher, Deborah
Drabold and fourth-grade IMS
teacher, Lisa Fuchs were name as
this years recipients. Fuchs was
specifically presented the honor
for her hard work and dedication
not only to her class, but to philanthropy as well. Nominated by
her peers, Fuchs has stood out in
the school community for her
work organizing fundraisers and
calling attention to important
causes such as Medford Lakes
Food Bank, Camden shelters, Operation Yellow Ribbon and more.
My mantra is Pay it forward.

Fuchs said.
