Earth Day clean-up

everal hundred pounds of hazardous, damaged sand fencing were removed from
the beachfront along with the usual countless bags of bottles and cans when the
US Coast Guard joined the Folly Beach Management Patrol in an Earth Day
inspired collaborative beach sweep on April 22.
The sand fencing had been damaged by recent high tides and erosion that virtually
flattened the dune line in certain areas. Crisco said erosion was worst on the East end
of the island, starting around the 900 black, and from 500 West to the county park.
Participants in the clean-up brought tools such as shovels, wire cutters, and heavy gloves
to aid in the removal of the hazardous fencing.
More than thirty participants from Sector Charleston and Coast Guard Auxiliary
Flotillas 12-6 and 12-8 were involved in the effort along with John Crisco and Eric
Cadiz from the Folly Beach Patrol.
Crisco called the clean-up effort a tremendous success. “We appreciate the commitment MST2 Drayton Parker & MST2 Gary Barnum are pictured participating in cleanup efforts
