We are heartbroken to announce that Alistair passed

way too soon on June 7th, 2016 at Canuck Place Childrens
Hospice. He fought a valiant battle with a very aggressive
and rare brain tumour called DIPG for 6 months. He was
surrounded by family throughout his struggle.
Ali notably came into this world at home during a hot
summer day in Kaslo on July 12th, 2010 at exactly 12 noon
VU[OLTPK^PMLZIPY[OKH`/LSP]LKOPZYZ[ML^`LHYZPU2HZSV
enjoying playing with his sisters, cousins and friends. Later,
we moved to Nelson where he attended Kindergarten at
Rosemont Elementary. He was a very distinctive, gregarious

child who made many close friends wherever he went in his

short life. He could be very strong-willed, and a force to be
reckoned with. Ali was very intelligent, intuitive, generous,
witty, considerate, and compassionate. He loved to have long
JVU]LYZH[PVUZNV[VZJOVVS[OLWHYRZOPUNJHTWPUNWSH`
with Legos, his cat (Jag), and dog (Suki), and the computer.
He loved to cook and had great taste for his age. He often
talked about what he would do when he grew up from being
HTLJOHUPJZVOLJV\SK_OPZTVTZHUKNYHUKTHZJHYZ[V
most recently wanting to be a chocolate chef.
On May 13 Alistair was able to attend the Monster Jam truck
show in California thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
We are so grateful that he was able to see the show with his
family. Ali loved his family and we loved him so much; more
than words can say. He had so much potential and will be
sorely missed every day. He was larger than life and always
will be. We will keep him in our hearts forever.
Alistair is survived by his mother Jasanna Dobbyn; father
Martin Bellefeuille; sisters Haeven and Samaya Bellefeuille;
grandma Gaydene Bergen and grandpa Guy Dobbyn;
grandma Claire & grandpa Yves Bellefeuille; great-grandma
(Oma) Anne Bergen; great grandma Gigi Bellefeuille; uncle
Timothy Dobbyn, and cousins Elwynn, Ngaio, Rue-Bee, and
Hazel Dobbyn; and a large extended family. Pre-deceased by
his great-grandpa (Opa) Cornelius Bergen; great-grandma
Audrey and great-grandpa Edward Dobbyn; great-grandpa
Lucien and great-grandma Alice Masse; and great-grandpa
Leo Bellefeuille.
The memorial will be at Tagham Hall on June 25th 1-3pm. We
welcome anyone touched by his life to come and wear Alis

AND PARENTING AFTER DIVORCE
Who gets to look after the kids? How
should parenting time and responsibility
be shared after you break up? Thats often
hard to sort out when a couple splits up.
And the parents sometimes lose sight of
what matters most as they battle it out in
a high conflict break-up. A recent case in
our Supreme Court highlights whats key
and uses one of the tools available to help
resolve this.
Mark and Jane (names changed) went to
court for a divorce. The main fight was
about custody, guardianship and parenting arrangements for their young son,
Peter, 5 years old at the time of trial. Mark
and Jane started living together in 2007,
got married in 2009, and had their only
child, Peter, about a year later. Jane suffered some post-partum depression and,
soon after, Mark and Janes relationship
started to deteriorate. There were angry
outbursts by Jane and heated arguments
between her and Mark, often in little Peters presence. Over the next two to three
years, things went from bad to worse. In
2013, Jane filed for divorce. Interim court
orders were made about parenting for
Peter, and the divorce and custody case
was heard in the summer of 2015.
The court emphasized that when it comes
to custody and guardianship arrangements for a child, its not about the parents. Under both the federal Divorce Act
and our provincial law (the Family Law
Act), the courts only concern is: what is
in the best interests of the child? Here for
example, Mark had recorded Jane swear-
ing at and bitterly fighting with him, and

Jane had video-taped hand-over occasions
when she would press little Peter with
leading questions about him preferring to
stay with her, not his Dad.
The court said the parents made the recordings partly to bolster their side in the
upcoming court case. This meant they put
their own interests ahead of what was best
for Peter. He shouldnt have been exposed
at a very young age to traumatizing fights
between his parents, nor distressed by
uncomfortable questioning while being
recorded. The childs needs should have
come first.
The court outlined factors in our federal and provincial laws to look at when
considering the best interests of the child,
saying it can use both to the extent compatible theyre both geared to whats best
for the child.
The court here made use of court ordered
reports from a child psychologist hired
by Mark and Jane. Reports like these (and
less expensive Views of the Child reports) from impartial experts can be helpful tools, since they allow the court insight
into the childs wants and needs without
the child having to testify in court.
Based on the specific situation here, the
court ordered shared custody, guardianship and parenting arrangements for
Peter. If Mark and Jane couldnt agree
on major things like health or education
decisions for Peter, Mark got final say, but
Jane could go back to the court if need be.

IT IS WITH DEEP SADNESS that
we advise of the passing of Bruce
Warren McGeorge (Nov. 15, 1952Apr. 16, 2016). Bruce exhibited grace
and wisdom while dealing with
a rare and aggressive form of
lymphatic cancer. He had a wellsupported and peaceful home
death, free of suffering.
Bruce was the second of 4
children born to Gene McGeorge
and Pauline McGeorge and
spent his childhood growing
up in Southern California (Santa
Barbara). In 1966 the family immigrated to Canada and in 1972
purchased their property at Salisbury Creek just south of Argenta
on Kootenay Lake. It was there that Bruce met the love of his life,
Kati Valentine. They worked hard together to build their beautiful
home and garden on the lake and raised their two amazing children,
Benjamin (Breanne Hope) and Sharon (Lars Stuurop).
Bruce was a man of many talents: builder, roofer, plumber,
electrician, gardener, artist (carver), baker and cook. His hand can be
seen in all of the homes and creations at Salisbury Creek, including
the Salisbury Creek power plant which provides electricity to the 5
homes on the property (and for which he was the prime mover) and
more recently, the beachside cabana constructed by him entirely
from materials salvaged from the lake.
Bruce was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Kati,
his two children Ben and Sharon, grandson Byron, sisters Sean and Katie,
and brother Gorm, as well as two half-brothers, Gavin and Nils.
A celebration of Bruces life will be held at his home on July 31,
2016 at 11am. All who feel drawn to attend are welcome.

Kaslo United Church is once again commencing the

Saddle Bag Service scheduled for another summer. On June
26 and again on July 3 at 10 am, our presenter will be Robin
Murray, the Youth Minister at Nelson United Church.
Robin came to the United Church of Canada as a
teenager through the youth outreach music program at
Gower United Church in St. Johns, Newfoundland. She is
currently halfway through seminary studies as a distance
student at the Vancouver School of Theology to become
an ordained minister. Everyone is invited to attend the
services over the summer, as we have some very good

HEALTH MATTERS
Exciting New Feature at Victorian
Community Health Centre in Kaslo
Telehealth is in place now at the Victorian Community Health Centre. Now one
can access Telehealth sites all over the
province using a video link for resources,
specialists and information/education.
There are two locations in the hospital:
one in the Primary Health Centre and one
in the board room. Georgie Humphries,
Primary Health Nurse, is working with
the doctors on this.
Patients will be informed by their doctor that specialist consultations/referral
appointments can be done this way, not
just to other Interior Health sites but
to sites all over the province. Often the
specialists may want to see a patient in
person once, but follow-up appointments
may be done through Telehealth.
This new feature will ease travel requirements for patients and allow more
frequent appointments than some people
could previously arrange. Be sure to ask
your doctor if Telehealth applies to you.
BCs Community Paramedicine
Initiative is coming to Kaslo in
early 2017
Kaslo is one of 73 communities in
British Columbia where Community
Paramedics will provide residents in rural
and remote communities with better
access to primary health care and a
more stabilized paramedic presence for
emergency response.
It is expected that qualified paramedics
in communities in Interior Health will be
hired, have completed an orientation
program and be ready to provide services
in patients homes in non-emergency care
roles by February 2017. These individuals
will also be available for paramedic
duties when needed. A prototype of this
program is expected to be operating in
Creston later this year.

Helping Hand Trusts
Canada Day Run
On Friday July 1st Helping Hand Trust
will be holding its 9th annual 5 km walk,
5 km run and a 10 km run to raise funds.
Each year the fund assists adult residents
of Kaslo and Area D to get to medical
appointments, tests and treatment when
they have to travel out of the area. If getting to an appointment will be a financial
hardship, or if the person has no means
to get there, then Helping Hand Trust may
be able to assist with the cost of travel
and accommodation. In 2015 the Trust
helped 22 clients get to 65 appointments.
The clients are always so appreciative of
this help as often they have no other
means of getting to the appointment.
Funds are raised locally and the July 1st
run is the Trusts major fundraiser. Please
consider getting involved and walk or run
on this day. You can pick up pledge forms
at the Kaslo Primary Health Centre or
Kootenay Savings Credit Union in Kaslo.
There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd
female and male in the 5km and 10km
run and for the person who raises the
most pledges.
Registration starts at 7:15 am at the
Vimy Park picnic shelter with the 5 km
walk and 10 km run starting at 8:00am,
and the 5 km run at 8:30am. For information call Elizabeth at 250-353-2563.
