AIR YOUR VIEWS ON THE FOLLOWING ASSERTION IN AN ESSAY "THE APPEAL OF

COMPUTER-MEDIATED ENTERTAINMENT IS SUCH THAT THE DAYS OF TELEVISION ARE

COUNTED" (B)
Technology has brought sweeping changes to the look and form of modern entertainment.
Not too many years ago, those who wanted to unwind stood no other chance but to be content
with the films or shows that television had in offer, yet computers have radically modified this.
Since their launch, the range of options provided to satisfy societys demand for escaping from
the everyday routine has been greatly extended. Bearing this in mind, might the era of cable
television be coming to an end?
To begin with, computers grant independence. By just typing the correct words in a web
search engine, Google, for instance, one becomes able to watch all types of movies; listen to any
kind of music or even play whichever desired game whenever one wishes to do so. In contrast,
cable television consumers lack such free will. Given that they are conditioned by a tv grid, they
cannot choose the time of broadcast of their favourite television programmes, instead they have
to manage between the available options.
On the other hand, while television only offers a passive hobby (watching or listening),
computers widen people's horizons. Days go by and more and more applications are developed,
therefore, no more than a laptop is required to do any activity in which the individual finds
oneself filled with amusement, whether it is reading, writing or drawing, relish is just a click away.
That being the case, encouraging creativity while relaxing seems feasible.
From my perspective, the days of television are counted. This device has been far
surpassed by the computer, which might be one of the greatest inventions ever made. It is what
empowers people to be the ones to decide what, when and how and along with this versatile
machine comes the unlimited and quick access to an enormous variety of entertainment at ones
fingerprints.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES (B)

TOO LATE
Addressing environmental issues is a lost cause. The alliance between
governments and corporations, the consumer culture, the depletion of
natural resources, pollution they have all created a downward spiral that is
unstoppable. Only those who are out of touch with reality can live in hope of
a bright future.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
Where theres a will, theres a way, the saying goes. Government green
policies, awareness-raising campaigns, education, eco-friendly NGOs,
committed individuals we can all do our bit to stop environmental
destruction. The battle is not lost. The key to success is a joint-venture
approach.
The pursuit of a pollution-free world is a dream and concept that occupy much of humanity.
Nevertheless, there does not seem to be much middle ground when discussing its feasibility. The
first passage critiques the external factors which make this possibility fade away, such as
cultural, political and economic forces. The second one, on the contrary, shows us the other side
of the coin, listing various methods for tackling environmental issues.
The idea developed throughout the first text presents sustainability as unachievable, on account
of conceiving everyone as vain and ineffectual against this certain chaotic situation, in which
leaders are blinded by power and subjects are not only whimsical, but careless as well. It is
declared that longing for a world in the absence of contamination is due to mere oblivion,
because the clever use of natural resources and society characterized by mindfulness is utopian.
On the other hand, the second text weighs in positively on the ways in which the dream becomes
realisable, e.g. environmental policies being introduced and adopted; campaigns being launched
to inform and sensitise people, and non-profit organizations being created. It is a cooperative
endeavour that is fundamental (not to say compulsory) to achieve the goal of people being
influential, ergo finally empowered to prevent our very own home from lying in ruins.
In conclusion, it could be argued that the matter in question is a herculean task, but not a
chimera. It is a fact that people are restricted by the arbitrary power concentrated in business
executives and rulers, but not prisoners of them. Todays misconception of everything being
disposable is the main obstacle, which through education could be overcome, because there is
no doubt in my mind that the environment will be protected if moral responsibility grows. Taking
into account that our planet is at stake, relinquishment is no option.

A study conducted by the University of Maryland has found that American parents spend an
average of seventeen hours per week with their children, compared to thirty hours in 1955. It is

estimated that 9-12 million children in the USA have no afterschool parental supervision at all.
Aren't those parents courting disaster?
The recent rise in juvenile crime rates has been linked to a sharp decline in basic family
discipline, resulting from the increasing percentage of single parent families and a reduction in
the amount of time that working parents can devote to raising their children. When it comes to
childrens upbringing, little time, though quality time, it is not enough.

Over the last few decades, many cities around the world have seen alarming increases in the
levels of youth crime. Governments are desperate to find reasons for the arising of this complex
and international issue, so as to reach lasting solutions. This matter has been extensively
discussed and two points of view can be presented: the unexpected rates of crime by teenagers
are due to the absence of either the father or the mother, leading to one of them responsible for
the complete upbringing of the child, and on the other hand, there are people who adjudge it to
the decrease in time spent in family, lack of parental supervision.

By the same token

As can be expected, this might mean that the days of television are counted.
Technology can be credited with ushering in a golden age of choices for movie and music lovers.
But for companies in the entertainment business, only those who think creatively about how to
sell and deliver content -- such as Apple and Netflix -- will reap the benefits.
