Adjacency Matrix
Adjacency Matrix: Common Areas
The common areas should all be located within
the same area and close to the bathrooms.
Places that need plumbing should also be
adjacent, such as the kitchenette and public
bathrooms. Private areas such as tenant
apartments should remain relatively remote
from high traffic areas.
Style Research
Overview Figure 1.
Typical Elements
Ceilings often had plaster roses or medallions,
while walls were finished with a dado and
paneling. Crown molding, arches and some use
of stained glass windows are typical of Queen
Anne Style. The style is a basic collaboration of
several design styles.
Interior Materials
Overview Figure 2
Typical Textiles
Damask was a very popular pattern for Queen
Anne, as seen on the walls in the photo. This
patter could also be used on upholstery and
window treatments. Velvet, and other heavy,
often luxurious fabrics were imported from
Europe and used for windows, bed canopies and
also upholstery (bozzle.com)

Finishes
The wall colors were often darker with lots of wood trim below
the dado but above it, the walls were finished with paint, painted
and stenciled with damask or velour wall covering. These designs
were more neutral in color scheme while the patterns from
stencils or covering could be more elaborate with Japanese
inspiration (oldhouseonline.com).

Crown Molding
Crown molding is a very popular feature of Queen Anne homes.
Crown molding can range from really simple to really
extravagant. Some of them have little cornice like features that
basically create a stacked effect. Some simple ones just have
that stacked effect. More intricate crown moldings may have
the stacked effect in addition
to a design with vines,
flowers, and acanthus
motifs. In most cases crown
molding is often seen as
white, however these can be

Linoleum Flooring
This was another popular style of the Queen Anne homes.
This would some be in places like the kitchen and the
bathrooms. It was
introduced in 1860.
There were various
designs such as floral
patterns, vines,
acanthus, and etc.
Also linoleum cut outs
was also used like rugs,
similar in concept.

Sconces were
originally
candlesticks
mounted on the wall.
They held candles or
a cup-like shape filled
with oil. The material
was usually brass,
though they were
very polished. These
sconces also have

Concept Statement
The transitional house will be in the Queen Anne style, and promote a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. Curves and muted colors will
create a safe haven, while repetition will create a uniformity and cohesiveness. Wood grains will be used throughout, offset in
places with tile, adding a natural, homey touch, while contrasting with the curves. The addition of plants and style-specific lighting
will tie in with the Queen Anne scheme, while also adding the feeling of a home.

Generally water and a soft sponge will remove most contaminants. Generally, neutral cleaners are more
than sufficient to clean and maintain StonePeak Ceramics porcelain tiles. Its important that the cleaner
used is a non-oil, non-soap, and non-animal fat based product. If a cleaning product other than water is
used for general cleaning only a neutral Ph cleaner (with the characteristics described above) should be used.
For heavy duty cleaning use a porcelain and ceramic tile cleaner. Abrasive cleaners will affect the tiles finish.

Finish
Sweep the floor with a soft-bristled broom. Also use the "bare floor" setting on your vacuum to prevent
scratching the floor. Sweep and mopping each week, only deep cleaning the floor as needed. Immediately
wipe up any wet spills. For general cleaning, choose a pH-neutral, water-based cleaner, like those designed for
vinyl floors or hardwood-specific cleaners.
F2
Cenia Beige
LimestoneBeige/Toupe
Dust interior floors frequently using a clean, dry dust mop. Sand, dirt and grit do the most damage to
natural stone surfaces due to their abrasiveness, so keeping a mat or area rug with a slip resistant underside
inside and outside an entrance will help to minimize the sand, dirt and grit that will scratch the stone floor. Do
not use vacuum cleaners that are worn -- the metal or plastic attachments or the wheels may scratch the
surface. In the bath basin or other wet areas, soap scum can be minimized by using a squeegee after each
use. To remove soap scum, use a non-acidic soap scum remover or a solution of ammonia and water (about
1/2 cup ammonia to a gallon of water). Frequent or over-use of an ammonia solution may eventually dull the
surface of the stone. Most stains can be cleaned with diluting cup of bleach per gallon of water.
Selections Justification
Materials Justification
All of the lighting fixtures, finishes, and colors are selected specifically to enhance the design concept. When considering the color scheme it was
important to choose colors that would be bold and beautiful. Choosing colors that made the furniture pieces look elegant yet provide contrast in a
complimenting fashion was extremely important to the design. A darker shade of blue similar to a pale navy was chosen for the rooms in the apartment.
Blue, like purple has been a color commonly associated with regality, royalty, and divinity. It is also one of the most popular colors amongst the
population. Lighter hues of blue are also remnant of the ocean and commonly associated with calmness. The bathroom will be a light hue very similar to
the ocean. The floors throughout the house will be wooden floors all except the bathrooms. The bathrooms will have a tile floor that tan in color which
will complement the tile used in on the shower wall and a wall in the public restroom. In the directors office, the hallways, gathering space and entryway
will be a tan wall covering made of Carnegie Xorel which is a sustainable material. This will choose will also add contrast with the wooden floors and
furniture.
The lighting fixtures chosen for the design also adds elegance to the rooms. There will be a large 9 light chandelier in the gathering room. A smaller, 5
light, version will be used in the directors office and living room area of all of the apartments. In the kitchen there will be a 3 light chandelier that is
similar in style as a pendent type light. In each bedroom there will be a foyer style light that looks very similar to the other light fixtures. All of these
fixtures have a silver leaf finish and will be used as general lighting. Aluminum finished recessed lighting will be used as accent and ambient lighting. All of
these fixtures will add to the Queen Anne style.
Furniture Justifications
The furniture selected are Queen Anne style or Queen Anne Inspired. They all also meet the needs of the client based on the style and functionality. The
pieces are of good quality and can with stand constant use, these are pretty durable fabrics based on their fiber make up. The sofa is easily cleaned and
the chair is selected in a pattern that it busy and can camouflage stains form usage. Each of the pieces are great additions to the theme of the design
because not only fit the style, but they embody the color palette.

Justification
In this design it was important to bring contrast and elegance. When considering Queen
Anne interiors many of the interiors are filled with a lot of wooden surfaces, crown molding, and
chandeliers. It was important to bring these elements to design, however I wanted to give it a 2.0
version. I wanted to make it beautiful since women and children who had gone through and ordeal
would be staying there, choosing colors that were not drab and stale were also very important. I
chose blues to be a dominant color because of what the color represents. It is a color of
empowerment and royalty. I wanted them to get a since of that when they lived in the dwellings. The
tan and lighter blues often give a since of calm and tranquility. With California being so close to the
beach I figured that these colors would remind them of that same tranquility. This would give people
a warm and tranquil feeling which is what I felt that many of the interiors had when I researched
them. Also felt that California is not a place that is a afraid of color, but embraces glamour which is
why there are extravagant chandeliers and polished looking furniture. Lighting would be beautiful,
but also provide a sufficient amounts of light for the spaces, especially considering all of the natural
lights many of the windows provide.
A huge impact in my design was coding requirements. It is so important when designing a
space to make sure that you follow coding. One of the hardest codes to adhere to was making sure
that every sleeping space has a window and providing enough space in the hallways and spaces for
ADA compliance requirements and egress. I kept creating spaces that were a tad bit awkward or
didnt have enough space. I tried to make sure I got rid of as many awkward spaces as possible. I
realized maintaining space requirements were most important.
