Welcome to the Angling and Outdoor Recreation Fair 2016
Special Issue. We decided to dedicate this issue to the fair as
it is one of the events that a lot of anglers look forward with
a lot making it to the fair and even more that cant but wish
they could.
This years Angling and Outdoor Recreation Fair is the largest tackle fair in
South East Asia and it is something to be proud of. This years fair we see
some interesting products by local fishos who have decided to try their hand
at designing products and retailing them. Brands such as Kanicen Nix, Drave,
etc. can be seen at this years fair sharing a booth and calling themselves Fish
Avengers. Good to see such entrepreneurial spirits.
The fair also saw lots of products from the larger angling distributors such
as OAG Worldwide, SureCatch World, TCE Tackles, The Season Tackle, Expert Graphite, etc. as well as those who are focused on outdoor recreation like
Coleman, Explorer Marine, Kairos Boats, Torjan Boats, etc.
All in all the fair was a success and we look forward to the next one. Meanwhile thank you for supporting us and do share The Asian Angler with your
friends. To all our Muslim friends and readers celebrating Hari Raya, I on behalf of my team wish you Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir Dan Batin.

ne of the regions biggest angling fair, The Angling And Outdoor Recreation Fair 2016 was recently held on the 27th - 29th May 2016 at the Setia City Convention Centre in Shah Alam, Selangor,
Malaysia; bring about anglers from far and near.

This years fair has about forty five exhibitors from

fishing tackle distributors, to outdoor companies,
as well as boats, car companies, etc. It was certainly a sort of a fun fair for anglers and outdoors
enthusiasts. It is a great place to see whats new
in the fishing world as well as to checkout products
that are essential for outdoor fun and recreation.
Lots of Activities
The organizers had lots of activities lined up from

talks on pond fishing or bottom fishing to finesse
fishing to special demonstrations such as saltwater fishing with electric reel, fly casting techniques
and classes, baitcasting techniques, etc. There
were also contest like tent pitching contests, and
lucky draws.

OAG Worldwide Sdn. Bhd.
Looking for some of the worlds lightest reels or

tough hard fighting reels? OAG Worldwide showcased reels by Accurate of which are built tough and
some of the latest and lightest reels from Pflueger
the makers of some of the worlds lightest reels
that will blow your mind
Other than reels they also showcased some future rods by Pflueger, baits and lures by ZMan
and ZCraft. When it comes to terminal tackles
such as hooks and rings Decoy offer some of the
best and OAG showcased them during the show.

During the show, OAG ran a photo contest giving

away Accurate reels, Pflueger reels, and other
prizes. They also demonstrated the power of their
rods to visitors that dropped in for a visit showing
off its strength and flex.
ZMan
ZMan is said to be the fastest growing bait brand

in America and they may be. ZMan is famous
for its soft baits that a very stretchable. Not only
are they stretchable, they are also quite durable
which means that one bait can potentially land a
few fishes.

Decoy
For those who are unfamiliar with Decoy, Decoy

makes some of the best hooks and jig heads ever.
Decoy is a Japanese brand whose hooks and jig
heads are super sharp and they are very reliable.
They have some of the best split rings and snaps
too.

Pflueger
Again for those unfamiliar with Pflueger, it is one

very established reel brand that has its roots going back all the way to Europe. Today they make
some of the lightest reels in the market such as the
Pflueger Patriarch spinning reel.
Accurate
One of the brands distributed by OAG is Accurate a saltwater reel brand from America that is
known to be a reel tough on hard fighting fishes.
These reels were showcased during the Angling
and Outdoor Recreation Fair and visitors were allowed to play with them to see how robust they
are.

Kanicen Nix
For those of you who are into ultra light tackle fishing, you know that there are not many ultra light
rods to choose from. Kanicen Nix is one of the answers to your rod hunting issues. Kanicen Nix has
some rods made especially for ultra light fishing.
You may have not heard of a rod brand called

Kanicen Nix. Kanicen is a well known ultra light
tackle angler here in Malaysia. He recently designed some rods for ultra light fishing called Leebas and these rods are pretty awesome.

DRAVE
When it comes to making your reel look cool, DRAVE

has some pretty darn cool accessories that will
make your reel look like a one of the machines in
the movie Transformers. Drave showcased some
of their custom accessories during the show and
I must say that they could give you diabetes because they are sweeeeet.
Whats sweeter is that the accessories by DRAVE

are locally made (made in Malaysia) and are affordable. They are priced below some of the more
well known brands the likes of ZPI and Hedgehog
Studios. So, if you are not looking at brands and

Rasengan Limited Custom

Paint Lures
Rasengan Limited Custom Paint Lures works in

collaboration with brands like Senses and Strike
Pro (what I have been told) and they make lures
(plastic lures and jigs) that are aimed at local fish
species (Malaysia and countries nearby).
They seem to be making headway with reports of good

catches too on their lures and jigs.

Shimano
Shimano as always took part in this years Angling

and Outdoor Recreation Fair showcasing some of
their reels, rods, accessories, and clothing. As usual they have a whole plethora of fishing tackle to
make visitors salivate.
Some of the reels that many look and drool over

(caught our attention) that were showcased at
the fair are the Shimano Scorpion, the Antares
DC, the Metanium, the lovely Aldebarans, etc. Of
course there are a lot more including spinning
reels such as the world famous Stellas, etc.

Shimano Antares DC
The Shimano Antares DC is Shimanos high end

baitcasting reel. It comes with a host of features
such as the 4x8 DC Computer Controlled Brake
System, new Magnum Light Spool that spins faster,
Extra Efficient X-SHIP gearing system, etc. Lovely
reel with equally lovely price in stores.
Shimano Metanium MGL
The 2016 Shimano Metanium MGL is tournament

grade bait caster for serious tournament anglers
with ultra light and super smooth performance. It
is said to be sensitive enough to transmit signals
from the fish. It comes with the new improved
SVS infinity brake cover, Micro Module gear system, and a pinion and master gear that reduces
the gearing noise tremendously.

Shimano Scorpion
The 2016 Shimano Scorpion is claimed to be the

best value, high-performing low profile baitcasting
reel from Shimano Japan. It is tough, with highly
sophisticated casting components inside. It comes
in a light-weight small palming body, and sturdy
body construction. This new model has dial adjustable SVS Infinity brake system to offer the best
casting performance.
SureCatch World
SureCatch World is another fixture at the Angling

and Outdoor Recreation Fair. As usual they showcased their reels, rods, lures, jigs, and accessories. They also have lots of fishing tackle on sale
during the fair.

Another fixture of The Angling And Outdoor Recreation Fair and one of the main exhibitors is TCE
Tackles. TCE Tackles certainly has an impressive
range of products covering almost all segments of
fishing tackle. They had on show a variety of baits
from Tomman, Strike Pro, etc. They also showcased
Ajiking rods, Okuma reels, etc.
Other than fishing tackle, TCE Tackles also showcased some kayaks, inflatable boats, and thrusters as well as camping equipments such tents,
camping chairs, etc. Amongst all the camping
stuffs that they have my favourites will be the
LifeStraw water filtration system, and Deeper
Smart Fishfinder.

Deeper is unlike any other fishfinders. It can be

cast out into the water and scans the bottom collecting information such as structures, depth, fish
etc. and sends the information to your mobile

Marukyu
Marukyu exhibited some of their famous baits at

the fair too. Marukyu is one of the bigger bottom fishing bait brands and bottom fishing here
in Malaysia is huge. Marukyus products such as
powder baits, essence (scent), etc. is certainly a
major contender here.

G-Loomis is another one of the famous brands at

the fair. Many new anglers may not know of G-Loomis. G-Loomis is one very famous rod brand. He
(Gary Loomis) is the one who coined the phrase,
I can build a rod you cant break, but you wouldnt
want to fish with it. G-Loomis showcased rods,
clothing, caps, bags, etc. at the show.

As for the outdoors and recreation side of this years

fair, there are a number of boat brands, clothing,
sunglasses company, etc. at the fair. Oh not forgetting Nissan too who showcased the Nissan X-trail
and Nissan Navara.
Coleman
One of the bigger outdoor and camping brands,

Coleman participated in this years fair showcasing their outdoors and camping gear such as
Campingaz, Coleman chairs and tables, new Waterfall tent, Stellia Lantern, Pole shade that can
be attached to car, Bivuoac stove, Sevlor Inflatable Fish Hunter boat, and Sevlor Inflatable Yukon 2P Kayaks, coolers, etc.

Coleman Esky Series Coolers
The Coleman Esky Series cooler boxes are one of

the products showcased by Coleman. These boxes
are claimed to hold ice 44% longer (or up to 8 days)
than normal cooler boxes. it can retain cold for up
to 12 days. This is impressive and as an angler; a
dream come true.
The Coleman Esky cooler is a tough cooler box that

is scratch resistant, fitted with thick insulation and
a tight fitting lid gasket. This helps keeps ice for
up to the claimed 44% longer. It also comes with
antimicrobial liner and cutting board that keeps
microbes at bay thus resisting odour, mold, etc.

It comes with UV inhibitor built in of which helps

protect the Coleman Esky coolers from the damaging effects of the sun; an important feature for
anglers who spend lots of time outside fishing. In
short, it is the cooler box made for hardcore anglers and those that like to spend time in the wild.

Sevlor Inflatable Boat
The Sevlor Fish Hunter inflatable boat was showcased by Coleman during the fair. It is said to be a
tough and heavy duty inflatable boat that is made
for anglers. It is made of heavy duty PVC. It comes
with multiple air chambers of which means that you
will still be safe in the event of an air leak.
The Sevlor Fish Hunter inflatable boat comes with

a Berkley Quick Set Rod Holder, raised inflatable
seats, anti chaffing pads, etc. The Sevlor Fish
Hunter is claimed to be an easy boat to row but
should one feel the need of less muscle power, a
thruster can be used.

This here is an impressive tent that Coleman showcased at the fair this year. The new Coleman Waterfall Tent has got two rooms (sections), is roomy,
has pockets and storage spaces, 2 doors, 2000mm
Hydrostatic rated fully sealed seem flysheet to keep
you dry, and it only takes about 10 minutes to put

The Campingaz Stellia Lantern
Kairos Boats
Kairos Boats was at the fair too and they showcased some of their boats and canoes at the fair.
They are known for tough boats used in various
situations such as rescue. They also distribute
safety flood rafts and more. But one thing here
caught our eye...

Splash Drone
The one thing that caught our eyes at Kairos Boats

is actually this drone called the Splash Drone. The
Splash Drone is a waterproof drone that can even
handle being drowned at sea. It is simple fascinating what this orange drone can do. Why Orange?
It is made for emergencies and rescue, and yes...
fishing too.

Trojan Boats And Mercury
Trojan Boats, Mercury, Motorguide, etc. took a

space too showcasing some of Trojans tough and
solidly built aluminium boats; while Mercury showcased some of their outboards. There was also a
sale going on, a good place to get a good boat.

Explorer Marine one of Malaysias well established boat makers is another fixture at the Angling and Outdoor Recreation Fair. This year they
showcased some of their boats including two very
nice aluminium boats that are ideal for our local
fishing use.

Gibbs Quadski
One of the items on display at the show that caught

our attention is the Gibbs Quadski amphibious ATV
(Al Terrain Vehicle). This is a vehicle made for fun
on both on land and in any pockets of water. It certainly is one of the big boys toys especially those
who love adventure.

Garmin showcased some of their fishfinders such

as the new Garmin Striker 4 CHIRP series and the
Garmin EchoMAP of which combines traditional
HD-ID sonar with the clearest Down Vu (down view)
and Side Vu (side view) sonar images.

PeMM & CFSC
PeMM or Persatuan Memancing Malaysia and

Coarse Fishing Sports Club Malaysia shared a
booth at the fair this year. PeMM working with
Tourism Malaysia to promote Malaysia as a fishing destination. PeMM is also educating anglers
on fishing and conservation with projects like the
Save Our Sailfish Project.

The Sports Fishing Sports Club aims to get more

he PENN Fathom reel is a lightweight powerhouse of a reel. Being a full metal body reel it is
built tough to handle the hard fighting fishes as
well as the corrosive properties of seawater. It is
not only built tough, it also looks tough.

Being a full metal body reel, the side plates are

not only tough. They keep the gears in precise
alignment even under heavy loads allowing the
angler to go into battle with confidence battling
monsters.
Smooth Drag
The drag of a reel is crucial when battling a fish,

especially a trophy fish. The Fathom comes with

Fast In Its Class
The Fathom may not be the Ferrari of reels but

We took it to Pulau Jarak (Jarak Island) on the

west coast of the Malaysian Peninsular to see
how it performed. It took on snappers after snappers without giving up. It performed well throughout the test. It remained smooth under pressure,

flueger has been making some really good looking and lightweight reels. The Pflueger President
Limited Edition being lighter, better looking, and a

To me, the Pflueger President Limited Edition conjures

up an image of a black knight (not the Dark Knight aka
Batman), the knights that would give King Arthur and
his knights a headache so big hed wished he had not
pulled out the Excalibur from the rock.

Main Shaft And Gears
Pflueger opted to give the President Limited Edition an

aluminium main shaft and aluminium pinion gear. This
is done to bring down the weight of the reel. Pflueger
claims that by doing so they managed to reduce the
weight by 30% on the main shaft and 60% on the pinion gear.

Rise of a New Classic Legend Part 4
S ome lures come, some lures go. This here is

part 4 of the Salmo Hornet story. For part 3, do
checkout last months issue.

The Beast
The beast in the Hornets stable is the 9cm behemoth. To use a crankbait of this size that comes
with a hefty weight of 36g requires a more specific
setup. Crankbaits of this sizes are extremely rare if
not impossible to find. They do have a niche in our
market and they are for the heavy gamers.
Personally, I use my heavy cover rod of around
7ft and beyond, with a 10-25lb line weight rating,
or above PE 1-3 rating; for this giant of a lure. My
recommendation however is a 12-25lb class or PE
2-4 rating and above rod.

Using powerful reels with 40lb braid lines and above

is quite necessary not only for working the lure,
but also for the targeted fishes that the said lure is
used for. The main quarry for this lure are usually
huge predators, or predators with a huge appetite
such as the infamous black bass and ferocious toman (giant snakehead).
It would be useful tool against any big game fishes

like large groupers, arapaimas, redtail catfishes,
huge marble gobies, snappers and other giants.
Due to its extreme size, jerking this lure could likely
cause muscle injury. It is best to just retrieve it in a
straight line. The massive vibration is good enough
to alert any fishes nearby and could cause a temporary Parkinson sort of an after effect.
Long distance casting is not a problem for this giant of a lure. However, I usually refrain from doing so because cranking it back is really a pain.
My recommendation is to pick your target well and
make full use of this giant Hornets capabilities for
the catch of your dreams.

Besides being proven to be successful in my hunt

for tomans (giant snakeheads) in the wild, it has
captured a number of redtail catfishes in stocked
lakes. The fact that it is designed for catfish, it has
tamed many huge wels catfish before. My dream is
to one day use it against my top dream fish; the yet
to be caught, mighty tapah (Wallago attu).
Secret unlocked
Salmos unique lip construction allows for some

fancy attachments; something that I discovered recently. As the wire through construction of the Hornet is not glued nor covered by the bib, it moves
freely presenting a gap within the bib and the wire
allowing the ever creative angler to attach a plethora of attachments to improve the lures functionality and applications.
The potential for creative modifications is limitless.
One of my earliest basic attachments is the addition
of a weighted swivel to improve the Hornets diving depth (see figure 1). It works wonderfully well.
It is like using a lead spreader, particularly popular
in western lure trolling concept, except that this attachment is much faster and is far less of a hassle;
without the need to tie a spreader rig. Just clip it
on and you are good to go.

A side note for this attachment is it works particularly well for floating versions of the Hornet only.
The attached sinker would sink the Hornet to the
bottom when left unattended with the Hornet floating just above the sinker, without getting snagged.
Wonderful!
Excited by this discovery, I made another attachment that is the to add a rolling spinner to the Hornet (see figure 2). This increases the flashiness of
the Salmo Hornet which is fantastic for snakeheads
as well as groupers.
The Legend
Being a thoroughly thought out full range series of

lures, with interesting variations, mind boggling color choices, extreme durability and reliability, simplicity, and not to mention versatility; these lures
are just simply amazing. The Salmo Hornet is truly
a fitting lure to be the next legend. Do give the
Hornets a try on your next fishing trip.

The interior is well decorated with a comfortable and

lovely Lebanese feel. It has pictures of the actual
city of Byblos on its walls. One can opt to sit outdoors with a lovely view of the Royal Selangor Golf
Club. The view is simply splendid.

With over two decades of cooking the food served

here taste great. I especially like the tabbouleh
of which is a Lebanese vegetarian dish made of
chopped tomatoes, parsley, onions, mint leaves,
etc. and seasoned with olive oils, lemon juice, etc.
Note that I am not a big fan of vegetables but I love
this dish.

There are lovely dips and perhaps spreads to enjoy

with pita bread an they are the smooth and tasty
hummus of which is made from cooked chickpeas
blended with tahini, olive oil, etc. and moutabal, a
roasted eggplant dip. They taste simply lovely.
Favourite Amongst Them
My personal favourite amongst the food served is

the mixed grill (I love meat), a mixture of beef tenderloin cubes, marinated chicken breast, and minced
lamb served with hummus, very tasty garlic sauce,
tomatoes, pickles, etc. I especially loved the minced
lamb.

Wrapping the minced lamb in pita bread together

with the hummus dip and tabbouleh creates an explosion of flavours in the mouth. It is simply delicious. Writing about it now makes my mouth water.
Sweet Deserts
If you love sweet deserts you will love the deserts

served here. The layali loubnan, chocolate custard,
and mouhalabieh are tasty sweet deserts. They
make a good ending to a lovely dining experience.

the ones I used to eat at school. I love it.
Minced Chicken Rice
This dish is simply minced chicken meat cooked with

sweet sambal (sweet chilli paste), served with white
rice, and egg. The chicken together with the sweet
chilli paste is really tasty. The eggs sort of neutralizes the saltiness of the dish.

With Coconut Milk
This sweet desert originates from Thailand. The

mango glutinous rice with coconut milk is a sweet
and sticky desert served fragrant mango. Fusing
sweet, salty, milky, and fragrant (mango) makes this
